My Great Uncle was the Chaplain at St.Michael’s Hospital at the time. He ran down to the burning ship from the hospital offering help. This was a terrible loss of life…hopefully much was learned to improve safety for travellers.

My Dad, God rest his soul, was a volunteer with St. John Ambulance... He never got over helping recover the bodies from the ship...

My grandparents raised me for a few years as a kid. They would talk of this tragedy. A few yards from shore and yet not much could be done. RIP

My Grandfather was a Toronto fire fighter, that helped put that fire out. He would never talk about it. As it was very difficult for him to remember. As they couldn't help many. Thank you for sharing this.💔🙏🛳

For such a high loss of life, this was truly a forgotten disaster. A historical plaque does exist at Harbourfront park... although the exact location of the event is obscured by residential development over the past 40 years or so.

EXCELLENT!!! i dont think i ever heard about this, i do recall my dad, ONCE, making a comment, as we drove past the area where ontario place was yet to be built, about a ship burning down to nothing while people stood on the dock it was tied to and watched. Back in the day, it was considered very, um, distasteful, useless, morbid and cruel to talk about the tragedy/s of the past. i often wonder what other history/s WE have chosen to forget, bend, fold, spindle and or mutilate? GREAT WORK BEST WISHES ❤❤❤❤❤

I'm 60 and this is the first time I've heard about this tragedy. Wow, very sad.

To add to my last comment: It was the smell of burnt bodies that never left my Dad...

Some might say toronto's worst disaster is olivia chow being voted current mayor 🤪 (the guy before her wasn't much better)
