If you are a fan of radio, Toronto was a great place to live! During the day, you could hear all the great stations in Toronto, you could also hear some of the great stations in Ontario west of Toronto. In addition to that, you could also hear some of the stations across Lake Ontario, from Buffalo & Rochester. You'll see that demonstrated in this aircheck with some of the Top-40 stations you could hear in & near Toronto. You'll hear CFTR & CHUM from Toronto, as well as a little bit of CHAM Hamilton, & WYSL Buffalo. If you know who any of the jocks are in this recording, please let me know below!

I started listening to AM top 40 stations from Kitchener (my then home) and CFTR Toronto when I was 9 in 1972. 1976 was an especially memorable year for me as a girl-crazy 13 year-old; total unrequitedness. In KW CFTR would transmit at lower power after 7 or so PM, so could barely pick it up 60 miles away, and switched over to 1490 CHYM Kitchener.

I was both a CFTR fan and WBEN FM Buffalo ROCK 102 fan in 1976.

1976 was just before Canada adopted metric the following year so there were only Fahrenheit temperatures.

CFTR had a jock named John Rhode, not sure but might be him at 2:44. He had a sign-off slogan, something like remember Rhode loves you most. Pronounced like roadie.

The “You” package on CHUM! For the most part, CHUM always had great jingles. I don’t think CFTR ever had jingles until the JAM Flamethrower package in the mid 80’s…

The best "You" package I've ever heard were the resings for UK radio station Beacon Radio 303 in 1977.

Yes, CFTR had jingles, just varied in use depending on programming at the time in the late 70's and early 80;s. The FLAMETHROWER was the most memorable for me..

John Majhor on CHUM was the coolest. The You jingle package was resung for the first Jack variety hits stations in Winnipeg and Vancouver. Karen Carpenter sang on the 1975 KFRC You title jingle. The layer vocal harmonies are the best.

@@rickcallebs1 Hey, Rick. Yes Red Knight had an unbelievable voice. I recorded this aircheck in Toronto when on vacation. Convinced my parents to take me to CFTR. They let us right in the control room. An engineer did everything, Red Knight was across the glass with just a mic, doing hand cues to the engineer...so amazing to see!

Hey Ellis, The first voice was my cousin John Majhor over at Chum in 1976. It was also he last air check as well. In between, you had Red Knight on CFTR.
