“It’s been a bumpy road, but I try to keep my thoughts positive.” Terence, 22, lives in a Toronto homeless shelter. He uses a camera phone to share his life and plans for the future.
This short film is part of a series called Red Button, a revolutionary approach to storytelling where doc subjects become filmmakers. Participants were given camera phones, audio and video gear to film themselves and document their everyday lives.

I believe in this guy. I went through the same depression he went through. It's really tough and not having the skills to live life good as others. I had to get help from others to get out from a shelter.

I was in your position a year ago , for an entire year homie! I’m the same age! It was very hard, a lot of drugs and violence, but it’s literally the “streets” so it is what it is. As much as people hate on income support bro (temporary of course) you should probably apply and also visit the housing programs that house you and help you get back on your feet and also set you up with work or even continuation of school ! You’ll be okay bro! Just don’t get on the drugs.. Obvs kush is all good and drinks here and there.. I hope you learn how to manage and find a solution over time to deal with your stress and anxiety!! However this is like over a year old I see, and I’m sure your not at the shelter no more hopefully, but if luck hasn’t come your way yet it’s okay, cause it will. I’m not religious but if you are then pray and visualize your success! Cheers homie!

I had a very similar experience to his when I was a teenager I refused to work I associated with a bad crowd of people use to sell weed instead of get a job and do nothing productive all day eventually parents kicked me out and went to a youth shelter for awhile and honestly it was the push I needed it helped build character through struggle . I spent a few months living at a shelter came back home for a bit screwed it up ended up at another shelter thos time I got sick of my lifestyle and just wanted something things in life like being able to have my own place and not have to share a room with random kids or being able to have my own car to drive places. So I reached out to a counselor about jobs at first I was in welfare to cover my rent I ended up getting a under the table job through a job connect started working a bunch and only use the o.w money I had coming in and eventually within 3 months I was caught up and finally able to be comfy knowing I'm not in the struggle no more tripping over the little things like food or not having a roof under my head . Help is out there even though it may not seem like it yoy gotta take whatever you can if your in a situation like that it may suck but you gotta look at the bigger picture not just living day to day sacrifices have to be made just know it will pay off in the end and you will enjoy it more cuz u struggled and know what it's like living like that so it just makes it better. Another thing is you gotta be the one to make these choices nobody can force you to do anything if you dont want it ! Hope this helps anyone going thru the struggle..🙏

Anxiety is just part of humans in general. While anxiety is not a good feeling it has its causes and finding its cause and trying to deal with it could relieve some of it.

Time to demand better from your government. You should be able to buy a home on full-time work wage...expecting that you would need to save for a deposit first. However depression and anxiety are awful. Work can alleviate this though...or make it worse depending on the supports you get from that work.

People don’t realize just how hard it is for those of us on the streets and I’m homeless right now but all I ever hear is “just go to a shelter”. Ya? “Just go”? I always tell those people that if they can find a shelter I haven’t called (which is nearly impossible as I’ve called every shelter I can physically get to) that had a bed for me, I’ll go!
