Part 2 with pricey penlights is now up! kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXzQfWWkj9iAb8k Our Amazon store includes the winners: www.amazon.com/shop/torquetestchannel Because our amazon store ONLY includes winners. Why did we not include the Streamlight Stylus Pro or Coast? If a light that cost 2x as much as the rest won it would have been a hollow victory. But when we do more, definitely adding it! Torque of TTC is working for Astro Tools, who also make lights. TTC is not the only testing out there, always consider multiple sources before making a decision!

If you use rechargable batteries or energiser lithium batteries you will get higher lumins. It will also cause them to run brighter for longer with a sharper drop off I've noticed as well. It's noticeable by eye. Please test!! Can you also test the Thrunite Ti4T or Ti4 v2. I switched to the Thrunite Ti4T from the lumintop for my job. I need firefly and something bright that fits in my pen pocket on my shirt so the chunky AA flashlights are out for me. BTW lumintop IYP365 (in your pocket 365 days/year)

It's a shame AA powered lights seems to have fallen out of fashion. For the next round of testing you guys do, take a look at Lumintop's Tool series of lights. They have a 1AA and 2AA version. They're about as small and lightweight as you can get with AA batteries.

I have a Streamlight Protac2aa model that is a "large" penlight i.e. a light with a clip. (stays in shirt pocket) I have had it for about 7 or 8 years and it has been a tough bastard. I finally broke the glass lens but it was because I was using it as a pushing tool against a garden shed door latch in the winter lol. The upside is that it still works great even with the lens out of commission. The clip just snaps on but holds on for dear life, have used it so much that the clip has worn a small groove around the body of the light. I have dropped it at least 10 feet many many times. Just keeps ticking. I use Nimh batteries and change them out about once a week. One thing I found impressive was the reflector is actually one solid piece of milled metal when most lights just have a plastic reflector cone. I would like to see a comparison of "large" penlights basically the largest ones with clips.

I had an original 48Lm 2 AAA Streamlight that was good for years until I had a fit and with effort broke it in two. I tried the very inexpensive 140Lm? 2 AAA Hugsby/NoName for a while which was great in every way except it ate batteries in minutes. The last few years I have been using a 130Lm 2 AAA Trie brand. It is great so far, and it has a hard life.

Was thinking about categories and sizes for comparison I like small lights but what qualifies as a small light?!.🤔 Pen lights definitely fit in a front shirt pocket and are narrow enough to be in a class of thier own but as you get into 14500, cr123, 18650, 21700 cells how do you score them by size considering all are very different. I'm thinking you'll have to compare flashlight body displacement by measuring max width and length for pocket-ability specs maybe throw in a "/weight"😉

I have a Fenix PD35, it's a good light. I really like their weapon mount for it. The 2 AA cell E20 is ho hum, I gave mine to my daughter. The single cell LD 12 is heavier than, but probably more robust than my Lumintop AA, but it's not as bright, and it doesn't offer the option of running a 14500 battery. Fenix does sell snap on colored lens for many of their models though. I have a 1 cell AA fenix light that has a head that bends to a right angle. The metal at the joint failed. Fenix has just flat ignored at least 4 or 5 emails to the warranty department. While I own four Fenix lights now, I won't buy another Fenix when there are so many other good lights out there backed by responsive warranty departments.

You guys [Torque Test Channel] do great work. What would your thoughts be on testing out pistol/gun mountable flashlights? Great test. As a HD tech, I stand behind streamlight 100%. My second choice is the Pelican 1920, an absolutely bomb proof AAA light. Used a Streamlight Microstream USB for the last 3 years, not a single problem, lasts all week on a charge. Also ran multiple Stylus Pros which lasted until they got lost (even spent 4 months in the bottom of the sump and survived). The Pelican is a beast, and even thought it's rated at 229 lumen vs the Microstream's 250, it is significantly brighter to my eyes, with a good spread. Maybe a little too bright on a new set of batteries (and the life does suffer, but it has a low setting). Anything above 200 lumen is overkill for a pen light, IMO. Both Streamlight and Pelican have lifetime warranties, and they're not shy about just sending you parts in the mail if you need a new tail cap after dropping it 20 feet. Beats any amazon special.

Great video, perfectly fine selection of brands. I have a personal love of EagleTac, but they don't get the most attention generally, so not surprising there aren't a lot of people clamoring for them. Also, the reason the Lumintop would turn off when dropping but turn back on just fine is almost certainly the battery terminal losing contact during rapid [negative] acceleration. It's a common minor failure mode for swappable-battery consumer electronics. Battery dimensions often have tragically-large "tolerances", so battery receptacles rely on spring-loaded contacts. The stiffness of that contact is a tradeoff between 1) security of contact, and 2) ease of swapping and lifetime of the contact. Stiffer is more accelaration-tolerant, but also makes the battery harder to remove and with cheap consumer-grade materials faster to experience metal fatigue.

As a quick testament to the streamlight, a bunch of us use those things where I work and they've been through hell and back and haven't failed yet as far as I know. The oring seals are top notch and Ive done everything but completely submerge mine in oil.

I have several stream lights. I love the stylus line, you’re right they’re extremely durable. My first one I did submerge completely in about a foot of oil by accident. I also may or may not have thrown the poor thing across a parking lot once out of anger on my car. It never died. I’d still be using it but it slipped out of my pocket and was gone forever. I miss that little guy

I've been carrying the original Streamlight Stylus Pro 2aaa for almost a decade. I get about 2 years out of them. They get dropped in hydraulic fluid, coolant, and from heights. The olight looks well made, might have to try one! Future tests of larger rechargeable, the Milwaukee 2160-21 claims 800 lumens with a long run time.

You can get a 10440 Lithium ion battery and get a lot more light out of that Olight i3T. Doesn't last long cuz it is still the size of a tiny AAA battery, but still, really really bright like that.

Having bought the Energizer for use in construction I can say that it lasted about a year with heavy use occurring more in the last 4-6 months of having it. For the price its not bad, I'm sure if you're more gentle with it and not constantly exposing it to drywall dust, dirt mud, etc. it would likely last much longer. Dust does tend to get in the sleeve causing it to be gritty feeling and the rubber cap around the on/off switch eventually ripped off exposing the switch leading to dust to get in and making it stick. Would likely buy again, but I want to give the streamlight a try and see how it lasts. Thank you for making these reviews as it really helps a lot of us from wasting our money and of course providing us with wonderful entertainment.

I'm a mechanic at car dealership. I think most employees here has COAST G20 (I have it too) that you can buy at Walmart for $10. Because this pen light has "focus" beam function. It's better than bright everywhere when you want to lit up deep inside the engine bay. Next popular pen light is streamlight.

With 2 years of everyday use on the Streamlight Microstream with original battery, I’m not surprised it came out on top. I have multiple $100+ SnapOn and Marco lights, but my quick go to is the Streamlight. Super bright lights have their place, but the Streamlight is tiny and goes just about everything well enough. Rarely am I so happy with a product that I just stop looking for an alternative or something better. This video confirms that.

Years ago, I bought the streamlight strion led when they first came out. I ended up buying a second one, so I would always have one charged. One lives on my belt while the other lives on the charger. They were expensive when I first brought them, but I have had almost no issues. I did have to replace the lens in one after I dropped it just right $8. That is the only repair I have made or any maintenance I have done. I bought them in 2010 and have used them every since then. Still using the original batteries. That's over 11 years for about $300 off the tool truck. They have lasted long enough now that they have become the sheapest to own flashlight i have ever had, on a dollar to year look

For the replaceable battery lights (except for the Amazon Special 😂) i wonder if possibly the manufacturers are testing with the best most power dense batteries they can get their hands on (i.e Energizer ultimate lithium) and then shipping the lights with the cheapest battery they can source, provided they ship with batteries at all. It's either that or they're using platinum samples.

Good point. And since there are rechargeable AA/AAA batteries, usually with a bit less capacity than alkalines, but still with a big spread, it can massively depend on the battery used.

Many brands are made by another company and a different brand is slapped on them for other sellers who never even test them and aren't even capable of it. I know you knew this, but felt compelled to type it out anyway, lol. I find some of my lights are too bright, so highest lumens doesn't translate into better for me, usually. Things like battery life, heat generated and recharge time take the front usually.

The Amazon one is the bargain in my opinion.. Throw some Rechargeable AAA in there and it has decent run time. I got a FIVE pack of them for $25. I keep one in each car, and a few around the house. The 1200 Lumen rating is nonsense, and everyone knows it.. just read the reviews... about 120 lumens is about right. It has decent beam, some of mine have some minor lens defects.. but not a big deal. It can easily project light far enough to read an address on the side of a house... from the road. It fits in your mouth ok.. has high med and strobe. I have used it under the hood a lot too. It lasted longer than more expensive lights in your drop test... Not bad. for a $5 light If your using a pen light on the go... delivery driver etc.. losing, dropping, or misplacing the light is a concern. I would rather lose a $5 light... If I was a mechanic... and could put in my shirt pocket.. probably less risk. I am a big flashlight collector... I have some expensive big lights.. I had a super nice 4 Sevens Preon pen light for a long time.. and lost it somehow out of my pocket, while getting out of the car. After that... cheap pen lights for my needs.

Streamlight Microstream has been clipped to my pocket for 8+ years. It’s the size of 1.5 chapsticks. Never feels bulky and it’s always there. Only had to order a replacement clip after 8 years. Highly recommend. I don’t like the chargeable ones I want a real battery. You put a quality lithium ion battery in there it’ll last a long long time. Real flashlight beats the phone light all day.

I’m late to this party, but my biggest aggravation with any size modern flashlight is combining mode selection into the power switch. Glad to see some makers are addressing this and giving us two switches. THE POWER SWITCH SHOULD HAVE ONLY ONE JOB. ON….OFF….ON….OFF. Doesn’t this aggravate anyone else ?

These tests are a joke. Understand that current technology LEDs operate best at 3+ volts so the nominal 3.7 volts of a lithium battery is going to ALWAYS work better than a 1.25(actual)volt alkaline battery. Level the playing field and use ONLY lithium batteries! This will put most if not all the lights at or above rated listings and will be how they were actually INTENDED to be used. There is a HUGE difference in performance. For instance, in the Thrunite Archer v3 "2AA" light I run ONE lithium 14500 or AA sized lithium battery and a DUMMY cell because its noticeably brighter at 3.7v than with 2 AA batteries totaling a max of 3v (in truth, alkaline batteries only put out 1.5v for a few minutes at most, best to consider them 1.35v batteries).
