Wow! Pepe is great! I doubt anyone but Sabicas and Pepe could play it with the right feel. Unless Angel grabs the guitar! Very true to the Sabicas style!

In reply to the comments on the relative weakness of the guitar, I must point Pepe plays without amplification and it seems this is captured by the camera microphone. This is close to the natural balance in a live performance which, to me, is astonishing. Very few, I mean very few guitarists are as naturaly loud as Pepe.

The guitar without microphone!! Why? In that way I don't know what is happening on the piece. Pepe Romero is a great guitar player, but we can not hear the complete result of this masterpiece ☹️

Thing is that Sabicas never played this with orchestra. A few tracks from his LP "Flamenco Puro" were sampled and the orchestra was adding to that!

Pepe ! Amigo ! Recuerdos!

I enjoy Orchestral arrangements, especially with a flamenco trend but what I find hard to accept is the clearly competitive sound system that has a difficult balance in allowing the guitar to be heard.
@deanmason15645 жыл бұрын
yes they could have mich'ed the guitar. It is easy for the guitar to get buried in the presence of so many instruments. After all, they have to use microphones to record anyway. When I play classical guitar with other instruments, especially percussion and keyboard (which can generate a LOT more sound) we mich the guitar through the house system. it's still a natural sound but BALANCED!
@deanmason15645 жыл бұрын
also what is important is the LOCATION of the michrophones. one should be located in a position that favors the guitar. Not overhead of the whole orchestra

First time I've been exposed to this concerto. Interesting, begins with much from Sabicas' "Por Los Olivares" a fandangos from the album "Flamenco Puro." That piece I'm quite familiar with! It's cool in this concerto setting!
@johnfowler31324 жыл бұрын
Good ear! The original recording was just Torroba providing an orchestral setting for four of Sabicas's solos on "Flamenco Puro". You can even hear a minor glitch (rare for Sabicas) on both recordings in the same solo at the same place. And at places, the orchestra was even not quite in tune with the guitar. In his defense, Torroba (I think) provided some really nice orchestral parts. But I think the liner notes that referred to how Sabicas and Torroba discussed how to do this in the studio are an absolute fabrication. As great as he was, even Sabicas could not have reproduced his "Flamenco Puro" solos as exactly as they were reproduced on "Concierto en Flamenco", including the glitch.

World premiere? This was recorded by Sabicas in 1962. You're saying it was not performed in public until 2007?
@eugeniuswilliams54577 жыл бұрын
'Ive had the record of Sabicas performing with orchestra under Torroba for years ( released on World Record Club in Australia). It is unique in many ways, no score ( for guitar)was written, (as Sabicas couldnt read music anyway), Torroba worked with Maestro Sabicas to keep orchestra steady in his score, whilst Sabicas improvised in and around it. Carlos Montoya did a similar thing at same time, but I think his work was scored by a friend of his. Sabicas and Montoya remind me of Beatles and Stones, how one would make a record , then tother would respond. Eg;, Beatles release Let it Be, Stones( the rougher type!) release Let it Bleed, etc,.Hard for Pepe to play well as the original was fairly improvisational , in true flamenco style. The original had much more bravado than this very tame version, which is more classical than flamenco!

Sorry to say but the guitar isn’t an orchestral instrument...it’s totally drowned out. Fabulous playing just feel the balance is off.
