It's not trying to break down, the psychological aspects of both animals. It doesn't matter if the hare(rabbit), was distracted eating, napping or just being scare. It only matters that it was distracted from winning the race. As per the story, the tortoise beat the hare. You might think you're quick, by defending the rabbit for acting naturally. Infact you lost this race, by not realizing that's what this story has always truly been about. The moral being; you might be fast, but don't get distracted by the small pointless things, or you will lose. As you should be able to now see, it doesn't just apply to the physical race, it's actually more about the mental race.

thr tortise has its own bunker on its back so there's nothing to worry about so they are smooth and calm on the mind so they keep on walking. a rabbit is a prey of many animals. they have to be high alert all the time and observe there surroundings. thats why the rabbit stops and looks around. the result is that the tortoise wins most of the time during these races. this is a very unique race! i would root for the tortoise too if i was there
