The quintessential ice dance, the only one to score 6.0 from all judges, the legendary Torvill & Dean. Bolero from 1984 Olympics where they won gold.
High Quality - facial features actually visible :p

I saw this live on 2/14/1984. I remember it now, 38 years later, as if it were yesterday. I was in awe, completely mesmerized by the spellbinding artistry. Dean's choreography was superb. The couple"s synchronization was outstanding. This was Beauty In Motion. The footwork was difficult, there were seven lifts and they glided across Olympic Ice at high speed but made it look slow and easy. Dean's billowing shirt gives an indication of how fast they were moving.

One of the best things about this performance is that the commentators were silent the entire time, letting us just enjoy the skaters. Today they feel the need to babble the whole time someone is on the ice.

Two years ago I wrote this: Everynow and then I check this youtube video to see if anyone is still watching Bolero 29 years after it was first performed. And people still are. Today. The number of views is: 2,180,758. Well, on August 24, 2015 the number is 3,075,037 - nearly an additional 1.0m viewers. Not bad for a routine which is now more than 31 years old. Torvill and Dean's Bolero hasn't aged because something about it continues to resonate emotionally for it's viewers.

What I remember about their performance was how closely they were skating together, compared to others of the day. Most people won't remember that, but to our experience then, it was like they were glued together and I was amazed that their skates didn't get tangled up with each other. All other skaters were at about two arms length apart, but these two rewrote the book. How close they were to each other, their grace and the beauty of the music was mesmerizing. I'll never forget it. Thank you for uploading this.

Trevor King - A "proud to be human moment" for the rest of us who cheer on those who are deserving of such support and happiness at their success. In childhood one sees that tigers and egrets are ever so much more beautiful than are humans. I so clearly remember 1984 when they did this number. I got goosebumps (and just did when I watched it again.) It was some kind of magic; everybody was mezmerized. I still remember Peggy Fleming saying "we're so lucky to be here". To my knowledge only one other couple has tried to dance to Bolero in competition SINCE then and they were actually booed. I don't think anyone will ever try it again - it belongs to them and to those magic moments in 1984. I had it on tape - still do; this and the 1994 10-yr anniversary performance, but I need it on DVD. :) Just amazing and I can't watch ice dancing without thinking of them.

I had to come look this up because I watched James Acaster's "Repertoire" on Netflix, and he notes that the reason they started out on their knees here, is because Bolero runs longer than the amount of time that ice dancers are allowed to skate in the event. BUT the clock doesn't start until both skaters' blades touch the ice. So they begin their performance on their knees so that the clock and the music fit.

You're right, he did say " perhaps not difficult". With respect, that routine was incredibly technically difficult. Example, watch at 2:07 forward, Chris is skating backwards with bent knee on one leg, carrying Jane's weight with his raised leg & right arm. And they, Jane had to hold herself, made it look effortless. That was the thing about this unique routine, it's easy to miss all the difficult technical stuff because it was mesmeric in its beauty. Dick just didn't see or understand how difficult ice dance is. In his discipline it was all about landing difficult jumps & receiving applause. But in ice dance, it's all about making the difficult look easy, & carrying your audience with you through the performance. So far, nobody's done it better than T&D.

Dick Button said this years later... By researching the music, the skating rules, and the choreographic background, I understood why British ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean were so wildly successful when they competed in and won the ice dance competition at the 1984 Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo. Their memorable performance to Maurice Ravel’s Bolero received worldwide attention, was one of the most iconic ice dance programs ever, and changed the face of ice dancing. But if Torvill and Dean had skated exactly the same program four years later at the 1988 Games, they would not have lasted five seconds-so changed, so controlling, so constipated had the rules become. In place of the freedom to create the choreographic concept called for by the music, heavy restrictions were quickly imposed: there was to be no kneeling on ice; no lying on the ice; official timing began when movement started, even if the skater had not moved a skate; and the music needed to have a clearer melody. Hello??
@llo7816
@llo7816 5 жыл бұрын
My mom was suppose to go to the 1944 Olympics as a figure skater, but war and she mentioned the same thing. It doesn't appear to amateurs to be difficult but it was and executed perfectly, one minor slip and all would be a mess! Every move was connected to the next seamlessly and gracefully entwined with the music

@@peteowen3539 That's a very interesting quote. I can't help thinking that had T&D been competing in 1988, they would simply have come up with a routine that corresponded to the restrictions that had just been introduced. Ironically, it seems that where they came unstuck in 1994 on their return to the Olympics was by taking too literally the instructions to introduce more pure dance to their routine. Even then, it has to be remembered that they won the Original Dance in Lillehammer with a sublime rhumba and still manged to get on the podium.

For anyone who's said, or is about to say "There's never been anyone like Torvill & Dean" - well, there's a reason for that. The Olympics committee changed the rules after their Bolero routine & made it mandatory that a minimum of certain moves had to be incorporated in freestyle - thereby making something as atmospheric as Bolero, or anything like it, impossible to enter.

8Julieth8, Your comment really gets to what was so great about Torvill and Dean, I agree. Complete consonance from the first step, the first note. "Their whole body and music become one." But I also love Davis and White. I think that figure skating, perhaps particularly ice dancing, which seems almost more of an art form than the individual and pairs skating, starts to make me think of classical music, opera especially, in that the different performances often have equal levels of greatness but are very different from one another. As with Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland. Who was greater? I don't know - they were equally great in my mind.

Everynow and then I check this youtube video to see if anyone is still watching Bolero 29 years after it was first performed. And people still are. Today. The number of views is: 2,180,758. Going to come back in a week to see how many people are still watching it and admiring the artistry of this dance and the amazing performance of the dancers.

The way they gliiiiiide 😍 mesmerising. Very clever choreography. There is a word in French that does not translate very well into English: complicité. For me, this is the embodiment of this word.

I never get tired of watching this routine, I don't think we will see such a beautiful and graceful routine like this again.

Brought here by current (Feb 2018) comparisons of Virtue & Moir to Torvill & Dean. As a * Millenial * I never got to see this - so glad it's on KZbin!

I watched this as it first happened, while on a ski vacation at Timberline on Mt. Hood. I remember being blown away by this amazing piece of skating. Still am blown away by it, 30+ years later. Mr. Dean is the matador, and Ms. Torvill is the cape. Stunning stuff.

Most of us who watch and enjoy don’t know the technicalities at first. But even when we pick it up, a beautiful performance with powerful music is a show stopper. Then everyone is an expert! Honestly after these many years it’s still a joy . But the build of the music was genius.

Fiona Newport You can thank the composer, Ravel, for his Bolero. He wrote it that way.

I don't know how to skate, but I do appreciate the exquisite artistry, strength, and compatibility needed to perform such perfection. I watched them win the medal back then, and I still am in awe. It doesn't hurt that this piece of music is a favorite of mine. If you haven't seen it performed live by a symphony orchestra, you're missing something fantastic!

Today I saw them perform Bolero in person for the 4th time (the 1st time I've seen them on rollerskates) and it's still as breathtaking and mesmerising as the first time.
