Very very nice. Not only the dancing and singing is perfect, but even the Shamisen is tuned, to the Edo version of Ujicha (the tea of Uji) though it is such a Kyoto's song since Uji is a city located on the southern outskirts of Kyoto. This means that this experienced Jikata (sitting geiko or musician) is able to play not only the Kyoto but also Tokyo repertoire. Which is also a way to honor the guests who are from Tokyo (modern Edo). As for Ichisono , since she already knew what song would be played and in which style, she also decided to wear a kimono with the Matsuo Basho poem on it "A monk sips morning tea, it's quiet, the chrysanthemums flowering" which is also season appropriate, and she wears the Hikizuri in the old Edo style with her Obi tied in low hanging and looser version of the tsunodashi style, typical of the Edo look matched with a wig in the tsubushi shimada style which is also typical of Edo and Tokyo Geisha. This is just perfect .

You're very knowledgeable!! (This is the original poster of this video but I lost access to my account some years ago). I wonder how can you tell it is tuned to the Edo version? Can you tell me the name of the tuning, and what tuning would be used in Kyoto? I have heard it played in Kyoto too but, I am not so good with the technical differences. I would love to know!!

You need keep your attention not only on the manner of dancing and wear or hair style of dancing Geiko/Maiko, but also on the manner of singing and playing shamisen, as well as voice control of Jikata(singing and playing) Geiko Momitsuru-san. Momitsuru-san is the greatest singer and playing Geiko ever I saw.

I've always preferred geiko than maiko outfit. It has that subtle, classical beauty vibe, while maiko is more like a sweet, youthful bloom, which is of course what maiko should be like since it is a young girl, but geiko outfits are so mysteriously beautiful to me.

Diane of the Giant Clan I agree. Maiko seem to get all the attention but I much prefer the look of the geiko to the maiko as well. The geiko just look so much more refined and elegant. As you say, they also appear more mysterious. They very much embody the aesthetics of “iki”.

If you're referring to the geiko, I know that each geiko's wig is custom and original to each geiko. Older or more experienced geiko may have different hairstyles than those of younger geiko. Edit: Or, if you're comparing the geiko from the maiko, the geiko wears heavier wigs than maiko. Maiko use their own hair, so their hairstyles are smaller, but more decorated than the geiko to express youth and innocence. Plainer, less flashy hair accessories symbolize the simplicity and woman-ness of the geiko after being so experienced.
