As a jazz pianist/singer myself, age 83, I know what you're talking about, of course. I suppose I'm using my own set of criteria that influence(d) my observations. Although one can't avoid a certain amount of age degradation, if the creativity and drive are still there, (as I've noticed in myself, technique notwithstanding, my music is more inventive than ever and I still perform. I don't know how old Toshiko was in this clip, but if she was in her sixties, believe me, she's still 'got it', energy-wise and maturation-wise. Hence, the 'better with age' commentary. How delightful to receive a critical remark - so vital. Do write again if you still feel I'm terribly wrong! By the way, Vladamir Horowitz played well into his 80's and Artur Rubinstein into his 90's.

Look up Emerson Lake and Palmers song Tarkus... sound familiar. This is awesome but I think the whole middle section is that ELP song. Love Toshiko always.

I believe Toshiko Akiyoshi's The Village predates Emerson Lake and Palmer. This is an earlier recording kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3bPpH57aZ16l8U Toshiko was born in 1929, she was 42 when ELP released Tarkus. She certainly doesn't look 42 in the link. Tarkus was released in June of 1971. Toshiko recorded at least one version of the Village prior to the release of Tarkus. I would have to think ELP heard Toshiko, it's unlikely she heard them.
