John Huston wanted Igor Stravinsky's music for the movie but ran into copyright issues. Dino De Laurentius then hired Ennio Morricone who wrote 15 minutes of music but was under contract with another record label (Dino wanted full music rights). Huston then ran into a man who owned a record shop and had dozens of new releases from contemporary composers. One of those records was Mayuzumi's Nirvana Symphony, Huston then realized he was the right man for the job.
