i live in nova scotia canada and in late summer when the grass grows in the massive salt water lake here we get absolutely millions of grass shrimp, i mean you can net them by the pounds and they look exactly the same as ghost shrimp but they have a slight green/yellow tint to them and they are much larger, wish i had a salt water tank to capture a handful

I have a small colony of Orange Rili, but we’re only now getting into our second in-tank generation so I can’t tell you how solid the line really is yet. Best of luck finding a solid line!

So when I asked around about mixing shrimps, I got this reply: "For Neos you will get plenty of wild type brown/grey or clear speckled) and perhaps a small amount of muted colors. Mixing them undoes all the selective breeding that went into creating the color variants. For crs/cbs/golden bees you can keep those together and still get offspring that look like the parents. For taiwan bees you can mix those together and still get all taiwan bee patterns/colors" It looks like you are still getting a good mix of red, blue, yellows, and now some greens. What is your take on mixing neos together...and what about a Cardinia only mixed tank?

What you said is right, you can cull mix lines to be less likely to throw wilds just as you would when trying to straighten a line. Some times the wilds get prolific sometimes they dont. I know alot of people keep caridina mixes to try and create new shrimp but I havent done that personally.

Also thanks for answering my questions last live stream, my brother called me almost exactly when you were answering. We have a filtration system and the water has NOTHING in it. (Otherwise it’s terrible and you shouldn’t drink it) No Gh no Kh at all. Should I switch and only add Gh? If so, where do you get yours from?

I use a GH booster from Nilocg that is only $6 a lb and last a long time. Shrimp will be shipped this week.

So you do not feed your daphnia magnas at all? Do they survive by only eating the algae in the water column? I was thinking to do the same and keep them in the same tank with shrimps, however I will not let my tank have green water. So, I assume that I may need to feed daphnia as well but the food they eat would probably contaminate the water, I guess.

Sometimes they can get a blue mutation in the body as well as green.

I know this is a 2yr old video,but I have a question that I really hope you can help me with please. Breeding-wise is it ok for orange Sakura and orange jili to breed,and same for both breeds but with ghost shrimp,I bought a colony of 15,most were babies or juvies,I’ve had them almost 3mths now so most of their colours have come in and it seems I have a bit of a mixture (1 orange Sakura female,3 Sakura males,1 male ghost shrimp and the rest are orange jili’s. 2of my orange jili’s have hatched babies 8days ago and I have 3 more berried (including 1 of the mums to the first batch),so I know the first batch are orange jili,but as 1 of the 3 currently berried females is the orange Sakura and now that ghost shrimp is doing laps for females so he’s sexually active,I’m just worried what they could throw out,I think only 1 of the Sakura males is sexually active but there’s more jili males so the odds are likely that she bred with a jili male,but there’s also a chance that she bred with the ghost male or the sakura,so I’m kinda freaking out,I’ve only been keeping shrimp for 3 months but I absolutely love it,I’m just sp fascinated with my shrimp,I spend more time watching them that anything else lol Also I thought I saw a lilac/pink coloured shrimp in there 🤞 did you get any good variations from this mixed colony? I wanted rid of the copepods in all my fish tanks and my shrimp tank,but after seeing and learning about how daphnia actually help has made me think twice,I’m not sure if they have a similar beneficial affect but I’ll try to find out

On your website when u say cull of the skrilles shrimp how much is that?

you will eventually have all brown. I did this experiment. first you will start getting lower grade colours, then lower then brown.

Ive been mixing them for over 10 yrs and even wilds have multiple colors. If you let brown wilds over populate all the other colors you will have more browns but I have never seen them really go far and all brown. I can tell you mixing blue and yellow make green and red and blue makes purple. I have created many new types of shrimp this way.

True but also in my experience I have had some that I culled and they end up looking like some of my best adults. So it really depends. Having a good substrate contrast helps alot with colors and seeing the best ones.

I wish I knew. Could be a multiple of things. Age, stress, lack of ability to molt, cancers, to sterile of environment, bacteria or other. Could just be the source and hardiness of the shrimp…

Most ghost shrimp require salinity to breed out, like amanos. Some grass shrimp which are native to the US look like ghost shrimp and can breed in freshwater but sounds like you have ghost shrimp which will berry but also lose the eggs since the larvae need salt water.

Sakura blue? If mixing blue and blue more than likely its going to just throw different shades of blues. In the import world electric blue and sakura blue come from the same line they are just separated and sold as is. If you mix a sakura red with a electric blue there you can created purples, which I have.

Def. not 100% true. It depends on how they breed out if a pair throws a bunch of wilds and they breed out they could take over but even wilds have different colors. I have been mixing shrimp for about 10 yrs now and theres so much you can do and I have barely scratched the surface of the possibilties due to the fact I have a ton of fish I focus on.

Hey there! I have a similar setup with a mix of neocaridina...I was wondering, if I pull out a few shrimp of the same color strain and keep them in a breeder box until one is berried, would that work to keep that color going in the next generation? I have heard mixed info on whether or not a female who has previously bred with a differently colored male will continue to throw those colors later on. Any thoughts?

It would stress them. If the female is ready to breed they produce something i dont know that makes the male crazy and find them you should just let them do it
