Hello I have had my right ankle replace 2 times. I had it done at Duke University Hospital. The first developed an infection and had to be replaced. The second again at Duke with the old style implant. It has not worked and I have been in constant pain. To make this a short version. After countless scans,tests etc. I am allergic to the implants I am so sorry I have had this done. Please think and pray about having this done.

28 yrs old im at the end state of ankle arthirits got it from a car accident years ago, my doctor at kaiser is suggesting replacement but also brought up fusion. I am an electritian so im on my feet 8 hrs a day, i do not plan on running or jogging anymore but i do a lot of laps in the pool any input?

Both of my ankles need to be replaced. Have you ever had a patient that has had both replaced? I’ve also had a hip replacement, does that effect the decision to replace an ankle?

I have been told I need ankle replacements. My right ankle is the worst to the point that it’s almost impossible to walk on. I have arthritis in all my joints. I’ve had shoulder surgery, 2 knee replacements and 2 hip replacements. I do work. How long will I be layed up and to go work can I use crutches or a knee walker? I’m 78 years old but not the average. I had both knees done at the same time. The xrays show bone on bone gut my ankle bone is starting to slip to the side

I have suffered from a pilon fracture three years ago. It was repaired but I’m at 24% permanently partially disabled. Am I a candidate for TAR?

Is playing Squash an option after surgery?

Hi Philip. It depends on A number of factors including age, weight, deformity, instability, and the level of play. Generally speaking we allow for non-impact sports where there is not a lot of cutting and jumping. Squash played at a high-level would put the implant in danger of failing early. A friendly casual game played at the YMCA occasionally would most likely be acceptable.

Tell me for ice hockey would you fusion or replacement. I am 66 y.o. play 5 nights every week each play is 1.5 hrs.

Hi Grant. Thanks for the question. A proper exam and x-ray would need to be completed to help determine the best course of action. The level of play and the ice sakes used would also have an impact. Hello and thanks for the question. For patients dealing with ankle bone TB we would work together with the patient’s infectious disease provider to understand what was done, and if the infection is completely cleared or if it is just controlled and sequestered. If the ankle is more arthritic from the infection, conservative and surgical options are available depending on the condition of the ankle joint. What is the average life of the new implants once fitted?

Hello Malcolm. Thanks for the question. We can expect at least 10 years of use after replacement. At that point, it’s not that they all fail, we simply do not know how long they will last because we do not have that data. Typically in other joints you will see a slow increase in failure rate over time, i.e. 80% survival at 20 years for example.
