The people behind the show saw we loved narcissistic Chris, who treated others as disposable and thought they'd turn that up to the nth degree. It's like how back when I was a kid, the people behind the popular sitcom Family Matters, saw we were amused by the background character Steve Urkel and slowly made the show about his antics and it soon enough was 'what's crazy Steve up to this week?' Rather than 'what are the Winslow family up to this week?' Or on Arrow, where the original plan was Oliver/Laurel before people started loving a character called Felicity and they took that ball and ran with Oliver/Felicity but lost sight of why we liked Felicity in the first place. Television has a history of seeing viewers liking something and the people behind the show then either giving us too much of it, or not understanding why we liked it in the first place. Sometimes both.
