I retired 2 tears ago and started going to the YMCA to swim....I saw a woman swimming back and forth very gracefully .....not TI swimming but beautiful...and said to myself I want to swim that way...I went to You Tube and put in Graceful Swimming and Shinji"s video came up....it has transformed my swimming and life....I now swim regularly with a group of lifelong swimmers in the ocean for a mile swim .....we average 30 to 35 minutes depending on conditions....I broke 30 for the first time 2 weeks ago.....I continually watch Shingi for inspiration....Thank you for your generous sharing of your technique....Bill K...I am 66...

Thank you this was what i needed. Just to watch no explanation. I am reading the book and watch a video every time before I swim. Total immersion got to me before I ripped a rotor cuff trying to push harder not better. I am so grateful for this technique.

I downloaded this music to my Apple Ipod so when I swim I think of you guys and your techniques, now after months of practising I can swim a mile quite comfortable, without splashing well almost. Thank you so much for this demo.

Among the 3 great swimmers, Shinji swims the most smoothly. Their moves are almost the same, but Shinji reaches out the front arm a little bit lower than the others(about 1 foot below the surface), so that his legs can be higher and the whole body position is better streamlined. In such a lazy kicking mode, this trick is very effective. If you want to swim like that, smooth and with the minimal kicking effort, you'd better do that too. However, if you want to swim faster, you need keep your arm close to the surface to minimize the drag, and kick more or harder to raise your legs up.

Silly question, ... if I utilize this style of swimming for either Triathlons or otherwise, do I NOT kick more than is demonstrated in the video? It takes me about an hour to swim a mile and I'm absolutely torched from the effort (mostly from the kicking). Clearly I have swim issues.
@ShinjiTakeuchi6 жыл бұрын
It depends on the purpose of your kick. If it is to stabilize your body in the open water, you might want to use an easy 6-beat kick or 2-beat kick. If you want to use it for propulsion, you might want to use a hard 6-beat kick, which requires more energy.

This seams to suit endurance, perhaps open water, swimmers. Does it work as well for quicker paces? I mean, you would want your legs to do more work no? I'm practicing this like crazy now so I'm an early adopter none the less. Cheers. :-)

On 1:21 until 1:27, I don't understand why Terry and Shinji are faster than the guy on the left lane, which seems using form which is not too bad (unlike the lady in the next duration). Could you please explain? Thanks beforehand.
@ShinjiTakeuchi8 жыл бұрын
The difference mainly comes from the underwater stroke. If you can use wider area of your hands to push the water, or hold the water for a longer duration, you can increase propulsion.
