This is mind-bending stuff. I think I need a crossover designed for my brain.

I have a 4 ohm tweeter(with bass blocker/capasator) and a 4 ohm midrange speaker wired in parallel, it still shows 4 ohm load. Do I still tune my amp to the 4 ohm load? Or the 2 ohm load it’s supposed to be?

Hello sir how are you...sir what will b the final ohms if v connect 4ohms 2 woofer in series and if v mix 8ohms tweeter...please tell bcz my Harman kardon speakers got damaged ..my out put is 8ohms 75 watts per channel....

What if you have a (4 ohm) 3-way speaker connected with a tweeter (4 ohm)? Then the tweeters will be acting as a parallel impedance - correct? Assuming that they have the same frequency response. Is it a good idea to replace the 3-way speakers for a woofer / 2-way?

That is correct Joe, so if the tweeter in the 3 way speaker is a 4 ohm tweeter (not for sure) what you can do is parallel the 2 tweeters and connect in series to them a 2 ohm resistor, and this way the circuit will be 4 ohm total and the crossover will work correctly and you wont overload your amp. However I would place the best tweeter on the front and the worst on the back or else you have a ton of comb filtering (cancellations). I know a ton of 70s speakers have tweeters side by side, but they just didnt know better. For sure you can start over and build a 2 way, but you need to design a crossover for them to integrate them together, so you need datasheets for both drivers and design software, plenty of free ones on the net.

@@AudioTalk If I installed a 2 ohm resistor in series before the 3-way speaker and tweeter wouldn't this cause a 6 ohm impedance to be seen at the Amp when only low frequencies are playing (tweeters not active)? I'm sorry I'm not understanding how the 2 ohm resistor would help.

@@JoeHardman But you would need to connect at the crossover, if you connect directly to amplifier will burn off the tweeter because there is no crossover protecting it, but again this only works if both tweeters are 4 ohm. So you connect the new tweeter parallel to the internal one, and then you clip one of the 2 wires in half going to the tweeter and mount the 2 ohm resistor between those 2 ends. Its just the rule of parallel and serial resistance in play to end up at 4 ohm total, but have to get the crossover to cut frequencies to the new tweeter as well or you can design its own high pas filter instead.

@@AudioTalk The tweeter I have has an in-line capacitor that blocks frequencies below 4kHz so I shouldn't need a crossover. The tweeters are fine, it's the sub 500hz range on my woofers that has started to sound shaky at higher volumes. I think I may have damaged the voice coils after 6 years of playing them at their full capacity. 😆 Thanks for your responses. I appreciate your patience!

@@JoeHardman The capacitor is the most basic form of crossover, called a first order high pass, the connections as described is still the same, so resistor and capacitor will be in series to the 2 parallel tweeters, it doesn't work to connect and external tweeter with a capacitor directly to amplifier, because you will parallel the entire circuit to the internal one, and in parallel the combined resistance will always be smaller than the smallest individual resistance of the circuit, so on a 4 ohm speaker you have to dig in and create series resistance or the collective resistance will be to low. Good luck with your project. I

What about running a high value resistor across the speaker terminals or snubber filter surely that would sort out the problem

Sir i am from india my amplifier's output is 4ohms but when I connect an 8 ohm woofer and 8ohm tweeter to the parallel 4 ohm output is not available What do I do to get the speaker's output 4 ohms

Hi there, the crossover there needs to in there to at least protect the tweeter from playing its resonance frequency, will divide the frequency span of the speaker in 2 parts, and where they meet in the middle is the designer's diligence to design it in a way where the overlap is done smoothly on the load as well acoustic response. But outside this area where they meet, the speaker driver will be operating in each their frequency span and therefore even though parallel connected to the amplifier, they electrically are not loading the amplifier in parallel. So with an 8 ohm tweeter and a 8 ohm woofer, with a well designed crossover the total impedance is 8 ohm. The amplifiers recommended impedance load doesn't matter to the total speaker impedance, here you will just be running a 8 ohm speaker on it, which probably will just mean that you will have half the output by running them at 8 ohms, because it will half the current because of its twice the resistance.

So, if I have an 8 ohm woofer, 8 ohm tweeter and a 4 ohm crossover. What is my ohms to each speaker going to be?

Hi John, something that doesnt work, the crossover needs to be designed for the load of the driver. It would be some what ok if its a first order filter, but anything else would be a mess

Sir I want to use bookshelf speaker 2 way to use on woofer and one tweeter my amplifier output is 4 ohms when I want to use a woofer and one tweeter for that I have to choose how much ohms 4ohms woofer and 4 ohms tweeter (or) 8 ohms woofer and 8 ohms tweeter and also how much ohms crossover.
