Total MESS! -Abandoned Cabin near Canada- Should I BUY IT?

So I have been looking at a piece of property that was for sale up in Vermont (right near the Canadian border) and en route to teach Tiny House Summer Camp Year 9 (which was so much fun!) I made a pit stop at this abandoned cabin in the woods (and I mean deep in the woods) to decide whether or not I wanted to purchase it. On one hand it does have what most likely was a hunting cabin (most likely built in the 60s or 70s), but its in terrible condition (as you'll see). On the other hand, a good portion of its materials could be reused and salvaged if I was to make a brand new cabin or two for possible glamping rentals on hip camp or airbnb. The property also has a pond and a stream- something I've been on the lookout for. Throughout I check out quite a few aspects of the land and mention a few things you might want to lookout for when purchasing real estate on your own. Looks like a TON of work, and potentially more trouble than it's worth. I personally wouldn't buy such a swampy small piece of property with such a tiny bit of high ground.

SO update- I DID NOT buy this- I re-visited after 3-4 days of rain (the perfect time) and this place was almost entirely flooded- cabin and all- just a mess. GLAD I took the time to check it out a second time- I'll talk more about it in one of my upcoming videos....

There will be sooo many mosquitoes in the summer there. Eh, if it came with more property I would be more interested. Not sure how much land you have to work with when you have a wet year

I fell in love with it. I could see it in it’s prime; the ponds vegetation pulled back, the ‘stream’ cleanly upkept, with bridges over the stream. Oil lamps illuminating the porch and it’s view. The dreamer in me says buy it. I can see the potential.

those are to water cows if they are in stanchions for milking....as far as the house and land.... you could dredge out the pond to make it deeper.... there are some things salvageable from the house... however I don't think the actual house is.... take what you want... burn the rest.... bring several loads of dirt and gravel in there to raise the level some of the ground... do your little stream with a walking bridge... if you make the little stream a bit deeper it might train it to a certain area and keep it from "wandering" everywhere. But when you build... or put whatever in there... I would put it on wheels so you can pull it out if needed. I would also brush hog the whole acre except the apple trees and the healthy trees. It will take a lot of work and you will have a lot of sweat equity in it... but if you can get it cheap enough... it could be a really cool place... but it will end up costing you quite a bit overall ... keep us posted what you do to the place if you get it

I'd buy it. You're just the guy who could pull it off. The only thing that I would consider is the price and how many projects do I have going on at the time. neat little place for sure! You could always make the pond deeper 😊

Hey Deek. I’d go for it. Lots of potential. Get an excavator and scoop out the pond to make it deeper and build up another area with the pond soil. Could get a few glamping cabins in there. Get the excavator to ‘accidentally’ run into the existing cabin too😂

I think you should knock the whole cabin down and rebuild a new cabin 4 feet off the ground. The cabin is probably going to cost some extra money anyway to fix all all the damage and rot inside and out. A 10x12 log cabin would look good on that acre of land.

A picturesque place indeed. Search for less money. And then make an a-frame with a lookout point on top. The metal thing is used for watering cows. Greeting

wow a rare spawn is back :D good to see another video from you "moist" land isn't bad, especially not if it usually gets very dry in the area... but digging some ditches and build higher up would help... lots of frogs = good sign + keeps the skeeter population down

Bogland can be managed and be beneficial too. The cabin can be saved, you could even cactus juice etc stabilize that wood, keep that rotted look for a looong time to come. As a structure it is NOT from the GREAT BOOK OF APPROVED HOMES pages 76 through 78 inclusive so a total win there.

So...if ya like a good physical project that needs some equipment to move some soil/ structures around/down I think it would be a beautiful place. Ya know dig out the pond, move that soil to build up a higher area to build something on, salvage what ya can. It would be a great exercise in creativity and resourcefulness. Would take some money but it would be so fun to see ya bring it to life. Just found your channel by the way. Take the best of care!!!. I'll be waiting to see what ya decide.

Buy this property , tear down this dilapidated structure , most importantly recycle these buildings. You could build your A frame , but with a three foot knee wall . A Timberframe , site built A frame would be really cool . You could build it on that really high spot you pointed out .

Buy it, gorgeous spot, great potential. Structure, meh, I would tear it down? Love the fact that it is so remote. Would imagine that you are going to be able to find old trash dumps from early 1900/1800's, so a lot of treasures to find. Just treat the demo with caution, masks, gloves! Safety 1st. Love the pond, you could keep that stocked and fish.

Deek those things you found in the back of the property are livestock water stanchions it was common to find them in calf pens. I can see value in the reclamable lumber. The cabin at somepoint is going to be on the ground... do you take it down now or let nature do it? To the question is it worth it? It all depends on the price tag. I can see the land's potential but is it worth the time and work to get that potential and value? Maybe, the real question is do YOU have the time and energy to make it happen? The clean up would be a full time job for a month or so.
