Thanx bro. But it's "Balkan Shipyards", the biggest shipyard in the Balkan mountain range... Since 2013.

I appreciate the design discussion!

Thanks Paul. Should have built him first.... He is answering all my questions, he is such a good teacher and, being small I almost don't notice I'm building him..... I think the time has come for your hands to get sticky with epoxy once again....

I built a sailing rig for a folding kayak last year, need to try it out when the weather improves.

Thanks Mike. Hows your Proa coming along???

Rael Dobkins my proa project is floundering a bit. two small kids and an old Alvin vega has taken the time and money. but it will get done eventually. are you going to re-rig crystal clear to fix the issues you where unhappy with or have you started to work round the issues . it should be simple for you to install a single crab claw. I like the direction you are going in with cheap and simple boats. it is interesting to see where that goes a boat or two down the evolutionary line.

I like your Vaka, Nice shape, Solid wood... You will do it Mike, Neptune will send you what you lack, In boat building he always helps........... I'ts his job! As for Crystal Clear, she needs to be tested properly, I believe she will be an amazing boat with one big Crab Claw. Now, it's very complicated, she is at the Black Sea, 300 km from where i live... I also need to find where and how to work on her... Living in an apartment and renting workshops to build boats can become a problem........ That's why I just decided to focus on something small and simple for the winter. WHY NOT? is small enough to be car topped, He is very different from CC, I can sail anywhere I want, I can move him with my car, I can take him for test sails in close lakes.... when cruising, only 2 of us can pull him up on beaches, no bay no problem... Black Sea? Adriatic?? The med??? The Atlantic???? Sail all, in one summer... WHY NOT? Car toppable, the secret of cruising on a shoestring..... Enjoy spring!!! We had a hard winter... I'm sure yours wasn't easy ether. Now, I'm loving it!!! All d best. rael.

I'm one to work with metal, but figuring on starting to play with tree corpses... I know it can mess up your day to hit an oyster bar coming to an island ever consider an aluminum tip on the bow? Or just reinforce it with more wood?

I totally agree, a stem is always good, on my bigger proa I have big pieces of spruce in the vakas bows and oak stems in the ama..... As for "Why NOT?" I never imagined I would go this far with him and attempt to convert him into a micro cruiser, he was built fast and simple for testing ideas and learning how to save weight... Aluminium strips? or 1.5 mm Stainless steel cut and bent to fit... I will add those to the "to do" list once I get him to perform the way I want. Thanx.

How did you determine the width of the main hull, by the width you need to sleep in?
@BalkanShipyards7 жыл бұрын
Why Not? was built winter 2016. I slapped him together out of off cuts.... I never imagined that I would be converting him into a micro cruiser. His hull is too narrow to sleep in. the distance between the bulkheads is to small too. We will sleep in a tent on deck, or on the beach. The width is always a result of displacement needed to carry the load, Boat weight+us and gear. But I still try to keep things as narrow as possible. James Wharram said that a 1/14 beam length ratio is the best, because any narrower just adds wetted surface drag..... I highly respect the man, so I'm fine with what he says. Why Not? has a ratio of 12.5 because of displacement needs..... now I'm happy since he's going cruising, he's gonna need it. Still I usually aim for 1/14 at water line. All the best.
