It should just be a laid back time where everyone has tons of fun meeting new people and bus builds. You are right we need to leave no trace.

It's a sad result of growth. I'm not an RV'r, Vanlifer, Overlander, or even a camper. But I do enjoy your content and that of others in those genres. Regardless, the pains that you share remind me of how car shows are very nice, relaxed, and "quaint" (your word) for years; then, something happens to explode the growth. Next thing you know, there are visitors infiltrating the show who misbehave by doing burnouts, drag racing, and littering. By "infiltrating," I mean scenarios such as Import drivers descending on a European car show, Chevy vs. Ford, and nonsense like that. Within a few years, a sleepy town becomes a hellhole over a weekend, costing the organizers much in terms of reputation, money, and/or headache; and eventually it all has to end. Even at a local "Cars & Coffee" meet-up with 20 people, all it takes is one asshole to have 911 operators frantically sending the police after us all. I haven't bothered going to those events in YEARS. In the case of your camping/nomad events, I think camping's popularity exploded in the wake of 2020. I was considering some camping, even to the point of building out my small cargo trailer, until I concluded that camping is no longer a way to "get away from it all." Instead, many campers are going to a "same sh*t at a different location." I hope to see the pendulum swing back to normal in the coming years. Until then, far off-grid may be the best option, but not one that I can do with my small car. Keep up the good work! 👍

I think one solution would be to move the event to a new venue every year. When it’s in the same place year after year and it gets bigger and bigger every year, is when the issues begin. The traffic and the impact on the area becomes overwhelming for the locals. They don’t like it.

I've been involved with a group called Woodrally that meets every Memorial day weekend for 32 years ranging from 35 to 100 people at various places in California National Forrest lands. We have been kicked out of one place burnt out of another from a wildfire, and just moved out of a couple places we agreed just didn't fit our needs. Our 24 th year we were accosted by forest rangers for having live blues music ,they really wanted us gone and demanded we get a permit if we came back , we knew the following year our 25th would be big ,I went to the county sheriff and pulled a permit and I had a trailered full bathroom like an outhouse but much nicer ,the following year while setting up our camp alone came the rangers who looked at my permit and told me I didn't get it from them so it wasn't going to work and we were to leave my reply was I got it directly from the county elected sheriff who is the absolute boss in the county even over the forest rangers and it will be more then sufficient, we aren't going anywhere that evening they came back with their boss they were standing behind the bathroom looking around when I approached , the boss saw we had scoured the entire area picked up all trash Cigarette butts , empty shot shells ,everything was spotless ,band was playing we had our own flush bathroom there was even a sign in list of everyone attending , the boss chewed out his rangers saying these are exactly the kind of visitors we want in our forests and he demanded they leave us alone no more pissen and groaning about noise or the amount of people, nothing he turned back to me gave his card and said anytime you need a permit call me and they left , we are about to do another one and if the rangers come in they always now treat us with respect because we always clean up after ourselves and the band shuts down. Every night at 10 pm sharp and everyone has a great time. All with no issues from law enforcement.

I'm at Dome Rock now, with my miniskoolie, and woke up excited to go to Skoolie today but now you've got me thinking re the dates and if everyone's going to move here maybe I should just stay here. Re the garbage that people leave, that's disgusting and they should know better. "Leave no trace" is impossible with 1000 vehicles in one place, but "pack it in and pack it out" should apply.

Can you give me some information Paul? When and where will the next true skooliepalooza event be? I'm old I'm 72 I don't have any family and I don't know what I travel the country looking for to be honest with you I'm an old Marine who lost his family in a car wreck long ago so I don't have anybody but the last time I was down by courtside and I was so glad but I just accidentally ended up being there and I felt that I found what made me feel great but young people the school buses the homemade stuff everybody getting along I didn't see anyone maybe there was but I didn't see it all I heard was the music coming from the slab City post and I understand they are just who they are but I had a great time and I felt welcome and I would love to go again before my time comes and I've been having a hard time finding where it's going to be I know it's not true that the land is being sold and all that I understand that all I'm looking for is information so I can attend one more

It's bewildering the ways that Skooliepalooza has changed in just the four years since I started planning my bus build in earnest. I still haven't made it out to the event (and now not sure I ever will) and it's just a damn shame. I think the only way it can continue is as it started - an ad-hoc post-RTR convoy of folks who simply wanted to keep boondocking for a few more weeks in the area and slowly drifting further away. Not a big organized thing, but just unofficial boondockers with no affiliation to each other or any specific group. I've been really disgusted by the brazen attempts to capitalize on the skooliepalooza name by social media influencers. Such a bad look.
@rigger469510 ай бұрын
You may not want to go into my Skoolie because it's basically a mobile armory. 😂 But you are correct, Skooliepalooza has become a shit show due to certain individuals trying to make money off of us nomadic people.

Okay on a real note. Why don't people buy Like 20 or 30 acres for this event. People can have friends over to private land if they want without a permit
@IntoTheMystery1310 ай бұрын
I’ve been thinking about doing this for a long time
@PaulBarger10 ай бұрын
You’d still have to pull a permit to have an event like this on private land. It’s much more attainable though!
@SqueakyWheelMakesNoise10 ай бұрын
@@PaulBarger why would a person need permission from the state or county to have people over at their private land? Does government limit home owners on how many friends can be over for a BBQ? Heck I could even argue that no permit is required if everyone independently goes to a certain location at a certain time of the year if its in public. The most authority government would have is limit how many people could be in the certain area of public land. The public is part owner of this land and no permit is needed for traveling and visiting public lands far as im concerned. Don't get me wrong. Government will always say people need to pay for permission to use lands they already own. But where would they get such authority? I would say government is reaching big time. So let's say I have a couple hundred people over at my land. If government tells me I'm not allowed I will tell them where to shove it and buy their own lands to control. That my land is spoken for. 😁🤙
@indy172510 ай бұрын
@@SqueakyWheelMakesNoise I'm guessing it would have something to do with the environmental impact of having several hundred old, leaky vehicles parked in a small patch of land for any amount of time, as well as generating all the traffic around the area in the time surrounding the event. For example, in lots of areas you aren't allowed to park a vehicle on bare ground for long, it has to be parked on a paved surface (to protect the greater watershed presumably?).
@PaulBarger10 ай бұрын
They shouldn’t need a permit in my mind but yes, by the law, you must have a permit even on your own private land to have a large gathering.

hey paul i just had to stop you at 5:21 what you just said is all messed up ,,, for you all to do what you do is in fact legal on blm land but you have to use the first amendment which is , to gather and assemble peacefully ,,, and this is the law for the government to follow for us , blm is free land to rome kinda like slab city,, or the national forest with some slight rules. at 8:38 i really feel like your describing burning man too yeah , you made me think of something if most 99% of the people live in their skooly that go shouldn't they have a bathroom with them , idk sounds like the gov bs , but i do agree the people that do leave their junk there don't really belong there , you bring it in you take it out with you
