Get hold of a floppy disk (a bit like a 3d printed save logo), take it apart, and use the black plastic element inside as a solar filter. you'll be protected for short bursts.

You can even see solar flares. I'm going to make a point of staring at the sun for hours at a time, in case the moon tries to sneak an eclipse in without telling anyone. Genius plan.

Nice! Don't forget to order eclipse glasses. My mom ordered it on amazon and I tested it out by looking at the sun. It was perfectly safe, no problem. Everything else was pitch black but an orange disc which was cool. So please order eclipse glasses so that you can safely look at the sun during the partial phase. This is my first time seeing it and I'd already did loads of research about eclipses to make sure that I can successfully watch it.

When the moon is completely covering the sun, 100% coverage, it is safe to look at the moon/sun with your bare eyes. But if any portion of the sun is showing, you need to be wearing special solar glasses, available at sites like greatamericaneclipse.com - to safely look at the eclipse, or just the sun by itself if you like.
@AlphaGametauri7 жыл бұрын
If it's TOTAL, no, the unaided eye can look at it. If there is any light outside the totality, then you'll need special glasses.

That's awesome :D The one in 2012 has a path of totality that will sweep across the entire US, so depending on where you are, you might not need to travel too far. I can't believe my luck, but the path goes right through my hometown, which is just 2 hours from where I am now- woot!! I can't wait! It's going to be incredibly hard waiting that long! :D

Next Occurrence: November 13, 2012 in Australia... the entire sky turns black in the middle of the day, the stars suddenly become visible to the naked eye, and the temperature instantly drops about 10-15 degrees. The rapid change in climate creates a vacuum in the immediate atmosphere, causing the winds to pick up dramatically in the vicinity of the eclipse.

No. You could use a pinhole projector or get 12-14 strength welder's glass to look at the eclipse. A pinhole projector would be your best bet. Take 2 sheets of paper, poke a hole in one with a pin, and hold it above your paper that hasn't been poked. Look at the light on the paper below the pinhole and you can see the eclipse occur.

I am really surprised at some of the remarks here! To see a solar eclipse in it's totality warrants many sounds because one is just so amazed! It really does get dark for awhile. When I saw it here in the States ( cuz hey, this person is in Turkey and the sounds they make are gonna be different!) but here it was about 11:00 am and when the eclipse was full, the birds were flapping all over in confusion and I assumed they just went back to wherever they go at night! I didn't have any cool equipm
