Total Solar Eclipse Flight: 360 degree sunset & flying through an eclipse

I had the pleasure of meeting these two men while they were in Wyoming. I would like to say thank you for choosing Wyoming and specifically the small little town of JayEm to enjoy this once in a lifetime experience. I enjoyed every minute that we spent together. I missed the chance of recording this moment on my own camera but want to tell you thank you for recording it and sharing it on yours. I hope you both had a great time on your trip. Thank you again.

I was also there viewing from JayEm, and had a wonderful experience. (I would like to say that the chaos of MANY MANY outsiders coming to this area could turn the local folks bitter with the massive intrusion, but found completely the opposite. The couple of places my wife and I stopped [Lusk specifically] were all friendly, and helpful. The ensuing traffic snarl was handled without the expected gridlock thanks to the local police and municipal workers. We'll be back again just to enjoy the area, as I have excellent memories there. Thank you on behalf of one of the people there!).

Really loved your video! I saw the eclipse in person in Madras, Oregon. This video captures the experience better than any others that I've seen. I especially love that you had the drone do a 360 during totality rather than focusing solely on the corona. That 360 degree sunset was something else! Thanks for helping me relive the experience.

Hi aniya; I think that will be more down to the different light sensitivity of the lights; the shadow is indeed moving around 1,600 mils per hour across the earth's surface...

Wow - simply breathtaking. Wish I would have been there. To go up with the Mavic and to show the scenery was a brilliant idea - the footage is rewarding and most probably makes you forget the gimbal problem with the original Mavic. Looking at this footage, it was the best decision to buy a new one - you will never regret it! Keep us posted with more from your trip to us back home!

I was up in Glendo. You captured it perfect. You eclipse carnage was on the way out of Wyoming. 2 1/2 hours it took to drive 23 miles.

Terrific & unique views of the eclipse. Thanks for sharing. I was in Oregon. What I didn't experience so much, that your drone captured, is the 360 degree sunset or twilight. I was in China in 2009 for that total eclipse. It was sort of backwards. I and the other nerds were on top of Huang Shan which was forecasted to have the best weather, clearest skies.... At the last minute we got dense cloud cover--but we were able to see in a flash twilight in all directions. The other part of it being backwards was a bus load of tourists heading to Huang Shan who knew nothing about it. The driver noticed it was getting dimmer so he pulled over, someone sort of remembered something so they all got out and looked up --saw the whole thing. And told us about it later. What would be really neat for a drone is to capture the approaching and receding shadow. I did catch some of that in Oregon. I was on a hilltop about a 1000 feet up. I really like your drone videos. Mavic should give you a cut when I spring for one. I'm sure you're a fan of Time Team, I noticed on one side of the big 'barrow' south of Stonehenge the next vegetation/contour (couldn't tell) was interesting. And maybe the bog cone wasn't intended to be round. Just musing. (I visited last year 2018--so I know it never rains in May and June and is always sunny and 25 degrees. Coming from California this was a bit disappointing.) I figure my ancestors built Stonehenge-- so if you have any questions....; > Anyway, what I learned while stomping around the UK and Ireland is that if you just look, there are barrows and megaliths all over the place. In Ireland looking for one thing I stumble on a couple of others. With a drone, during dry seasons, at dawn and dusk, you probably have a chance at spotting signs of archeology that all the other methods might miss.

@@IaninLondon Thanks. During a partial eclipse the dappled light under trees? It's all overlapping mini-eclipses. A colander makes dozens of eclipse images. Square holes? mini-eclipses. It's pretty neat, well worth looking out for. And something to do in between total eclipses. It also means that on any sunny day, those round sun dapples are all images of the sun-- doesn't matter what shape the aperture is.

Howdy John. There was an observation plane chasing the shadow that flew over at a high altitude at that point. Because the sun was so slim, the shadow of the plane was sharp and clear....
