It's only during the few moments of totality (when the moon is directly and completely in front of the sun) that you can look at it with your bare eyes. I am going to guess the baby’s eyes were protected by a visor, or umbrella, or something similar before and after totality. During the few minutes of totality it is safe to look at the sun. Any other part of the few hours before and after it is extremely dangerous and can and will damage your eyes or blind you. A glance or two is mostly harmless.

In August 2017 the eclipse went through a large area of Wyoming, however, the roads were so congested and motels were packed so full that if you didn't live right where it went through, you couldn't enjoy it. I was only about 50 miles from it but, the roads were nothing but a line of vehicles through the whole State. You could see it somewhat in Cheyenne but, that wasn't in the path of totality!
