I can see why the emperor declared war on the yellow turbans they are a pain to dislodge I was playing against them in this campaign and had my ass handed to me several times before I started to win but once the turbans are dislodged it's easy to snowball there lands

would love to see a full Huang Shao play through at some point jon, knowledge is power. Loving the look of this though, the defender buff is very welcome, much easier to defend places with garrisons so you don't have to keep your armies stuck next to your land just in case and makes lots of sense as defenders would have the advantage until siege attrition kicks in.

I've genuinely had a campaign basically turn into this campaign. Practically everyone became a vassal of another faction. Every time I'm back home and can play I load up that game and defend myself against ten different late game factions coming for my throat. If this is anything to go by, oh boyo my favourite torture has become its own campaign!

Saw this being done on a few other Total War LP's so I thought i might do it here Under the Yellow Sky, chapter 1 The Yellow Turban Rebellion began in the summer of 184 CE when Emperor Ling finally realized that the local northern warlords were unable to contain the rapidly growing rebellion after minor governor Han Fu was killed in eastern Bohai. However, This declaration of war against the Yellow Turbans was too little, too late. Already armies of those loyal to the cause sprang up everywhere north of the Yangtze, with newly-made generals Gong Du, He Yi and Huang Shao rising to prominence in these rebel enclaves. The opening conflict was the battle of Pingyuan. After the personal army of rebel Zhang Bao forcefully seized the commandry's eastern salt mines, the governor promptly resigned and fled over the yellow river, and the position of authority was seized by beloved local Liu Bei and his brothers Zhang Fei and Guan Yu, who fortified the town and marched the town militia out to meet the rapidly approaching army of Zhang Bao. The clash on a foggy, wooded hillside was brief, yet resulted in the loss of most of the loyalist army and one of Liu Bei's prominent commaders, Yuan Yanrui. The vast majority of loyalist troops did not even make it to the rebel lines before being driven back by intense fire. Forced to retreat, Liu bei and Guan Yu evacuated the town of the fifth of the population loyal to the emperor and left the remainder of the militia and his brother Zhang Fei to cover their retreat. What followed was the massacre of all loyal soldiers garrisoning the town and the execution of Zhang Fei, who went out cursing the Zhang brothers for sullying his and their family name, and the acquisition of Zhang Fei's legendary Serpent Spear as a trophy for Zhang Bao. The rebellion takes the form of Han Empire Loyalists or something. I forget the exact name of the group that takes the place of the generic Yellow Turban Rebellion. It's been a while since I last played as Gong Du.

I like that the defenders now get a bunch of toys. You never really had an answer to enemy artillery beyond getting your own against it, now there are more defensive options and that makes a lot of sense. If you had walls, ancient warfare dictated it would take you 4-5x as many troops to take it. this could more easily reflect the strength of a defensive position.

Ok... Jon. You're not givin Zhang Zue enough credit there at the beginning. He claimed he was JESUS' BROTHER. He then had a bad-ass demon killing sword forged, and then went to work. Guy was in hard times, and super stressed. So yeah, it was understandable if he had a mental break-down. But his mental breakdown turned him into an absolute mad-lad. He even told the Catholic Church to pay tribute and worship him since he was the new figure of their religion. So yeah, if I remember correctly, the 3rd deadliest conflict in human history was started by this guy.

Jon. I love you. I love this Three Kingdoms Total War game. I might well buy it even though it will run like silt on my tatty old laptop, the same way I bought into Stellaris. I have absolutely loved the Yellow Turban Rebellion since I first heard about them may years ago. BUT YOU PROMISED US CRUSADER KINGS TWO! I am scared now. What if you don't do this before CK3 comes out? What if CK3 doesn't match up to expectations? I have already had one terrible disapointment this year. You know what that is because everyone in the country is in the same boat. CK2 has many more sparkles left on the tree that you have yet to discover. Please give it another go. It is your game. You made it yours. For Auld Lang Syne!

Another note on Zhang Jue as he's represented in ROTTK: the old ghost man in the cave is penned as Zhuangzi AKA one of the two most important people in Daoism. He's also (if you've read his book from ye olde ancient times, also called Zhuangzi) the sort of badass hippie who tells kings and emperors to piss off and generally doesn't worry about anything. No mention of why he turned into a ghost though.
