Hi Kristy, the concept of colonisation in the play is a very modern one and something that Shakespeare wouldn't have considered or intended. Some leftist critics use it to enhance a political agenda and you can find some evidence with Caliban to support this interpretation if you choose to take this path. There is no space here for detail but if you type colonisation Shakespeare The Tempest into google there is plenty of stuff, much of which is university academic level. Good luck with it and don't believe everything you read, try and form your own opinions.
