Aussie here and can’t believe how corrupt this is. Our system is based on yours, but our upper house, the Senate, is commonly referred to as the house of review. Members are elected by voters. Each Federal election in the lower house also has elections for half of the Senate, unless there is a double dissolution election. Each state/territory has a number of senators depending on the population of the state/territory. Many parties have more than one senator in each state and the senators are elected under a quota. The Senate often rejects bills put forward by the lower house and has them rejected or sent back to the lower house for review/modification. The Senate can even bring down an elected government that is on the nose as happened with the sacking of Gough Whitlam’s Labor govt in 1975

You might want to look up how much they ACTUALLY get paid. For example that £xxx figure per day that has been bandied about a lot for a lot of years and is still just as it was several years ago, both true and false. They only get paid for the days they go in, minimum amount of time. Many only go in once a week and have regular holidays throughout the year, some as noted (in the full discussion if not this one), and a couple of hundred hardly ever turn up. So all of this needs to be taken into account, and the thing for people to look to (it is published) is the total annual cost of the house of Lords, and within that will be the monies paid to Lord's for the year, per year.
