I donate a lot of good stuff to Goodwill, brand new, never worn etc. Quality stuff. In my younger hears I was a shopoholic, but now at 73 I just want to downsize as quickly and easily as possible. Taking a carload to Goodwill every month, without fail, is how I do this. As far as selling it, I don't need the money. Convenience is the key.

I used to donate everything to Goodwill when I cleaned out my closet. Now I give it to women at church. A woman who works at our Goodwill told me they send everything worth money to their online store. I don't care about that. Poor people need to have the first option. We donate out of the goodness of our hearts for poor people.

Their goodwill seems to consistently have good items, so maybe not all of them do. But nonetheless it is awesome that you donate directly to the person in need. 💜

I wish Goodwill served people who need inexpensive items. Reselling is fine but it bothers me that they take EVERYTHING and leave nothing for the people in need. I have a ton of cashmere sweaters from J Crew that I bought this year and really nice things that could help someone decorate an apartment. I would LOVE to take them to Goodwill for someone who can't afford cashmere to find this summer, because I will buy a ton more next year. But, I will never put my $150 sweater in a resellers cart. I will give them away to a place where I KNOW they will benefit women in need. To me, it's a shame what has happened to Goodwill. There is not good will left on Goodwill. 😥 It makes me sad.

Glass Insulators: Their history and use is an interesting one. Initially the companies made Insulators (different style) for use with Lightning Rods on Barns and Houses, but expanded and began producing those green & white common units we see in antique malls and thrift stores to support the Telegraph lines, when they were introduced and state of the art. They were not there to prevent electrical shock, but to help limit the loss of signal strength experienced by low power telegraph signals traveling from town to town. The power for many of those telegraph keys was basic, like dry cell batteries, or even hand cranked like a WW I Field Telephone. Rural electrification didn't reach many communites until the 1940s and telegraphs go back 50 years from them. 1 or 2 of these insulators sat on top of a Telegraph pole and isolated it from the pole. The wires were strung on the glass. As telegraphs were replaced by telephones, wooden cross bars were put on the poles and each cross bar could hold 1 or more wires. Need more phones, add more cross bars above or below the first. Then, when the demand for land line phones really kicked off, phone cables with 50, 100 or even more pairs of wire were put inside individual cables and the insulation went right on the wires and cables (much like a home extension cord) and the glass insulators became obsolete and became pretty garden whimseys and light catchers. Many companies, including Kerr (the jar people) made them in many colors, shapes and sizes. They aren't worth much because there so many. Lightning rod balls, however can be worth really good money. Now about the only place you still see such insulators in use are the living museum exhibits and some very isolated communities that still only have a phone for the General Store and maybe the Doctor and Sheriff.

I believe the brass peacock at 5:12 that you thought was a shoehorn is an incense holder. There's a small hole on its chest where you would put the stick in. And then the tray part would catch the embers that fell after you lit the incense stick. We had one when I was younger, but more ornate. We didn't use it for incense though.
