I was a Combat Medic and Op. Rm. Surgical Tech. Asst. during the Vietnam War. This procedure took us many hours to do with painstaking, slow clamping, isolation and excising of the bowel. The end to end was done very carefully with curved / straight criles, kelly hemostats and gut suturing techniques .. holding to position and intricate hand stitching. If we had complications requiring wound debridement , vascular and/or tissue repair...throw out the book and plan to stand in most of the day/or night ! Surgical instruments have come a long, long way... but the basic objectives are still much the same....We did everything possible to help our Surgeons, and accomplished procedures that Peace time Nurses today only wish they could do and don't, because of the Legal Risks and Liabilities of today's World of sue em for anything and hope something sticks to the wall . Our Surgeons were happy to teach us any tricks they knew would help them, as time was always our enemy...and killed many a good soldier..Thank you Veterans for all your Service to our Country. A Special Thanks to all of our Surgical Teams who saved so many precious lives and restored to health so many of our Military Personal.and their dependents. Dana .... US Army Surgical Team VN Era ....Science Teacher, Big Pharma Rep. and Veteran Rep. [ Ret.]

The cutter/stapler is an awesome tool!

Must be luxurious to use lots of stappler. Nowadays we could seal the mesentery/colic vessels with energy sealing device like ligasure/harmonic scalpel/thunderbolt. Still the big vessels >8mm better to ligated/clipped.

I had a sigmoid colon/rectal resection due to colon cancer, I just made 5 years 👍🏻, what happens to the staples used inside the colon to attach the colon back? Do they last forever with no problems mainly?

I am very curious about the possibility of infection? How does the colon and blood vessels reattach, with the stapler making the anastomoses, it looks like all openings are closed?
@dphotos0077 жыл бұрын
Jonni Trea infection is a risk. I have had three of these resections over my lifetime due to Crohns Disease. The first operation got infected. These are not fun operations to have. It takes your intestines time to get used to the missing bowel. For me it takes about 4 months to feel some what normal. I got very tired for a long time after each operation and I never have a solid bowel movement even after taking Questran and Imodium. I have a life of lots of diarrhea everyday of my life. I have short bowel syndrome.

Is there an animation of the use of these staplers in this procedure somewhere? I can't quite grasp how the bowel re-attaches with staples.

I had this done to me because of my gallbladder surgery due to the doctors messing up. I have a scar down to my chest to my pelvis. Im only 29, im recoverying okay aside from some pain. Never thought i would have this done to me but i never thought the surgeons could mess up on gallbladder surgery. .

Do you know how hard it is to images of the large intestine? I've been trying for hours. I recently had a total colectomy and had the docs take a picture of my removed colon. I want to know what it's supposed to look like healthy for comparisons but I can't find real photos/videos anywhere. This is the closest I've come and obviously this colon isn't 100% healthy or the procedure wouldn't be happening. All the same thank you so much for posting

Jackson Haskell, that is healthy bowel. They resected the one section that was cancer, but the rest is normal.

Nick Christofis how are you doing now after 1 year of this operation ?
@gennadylovesme51938 жыл бұрын
Varun B hi mate, not good!! I've been in hospital 12 times this year! I have developed a stricture we're the surgeons did the resection.ive have 6 balloon dilations and it doesn't seem to be working.also have hernias now we're they cut me open as the surgeon did not perform keyhole.its been a journey for me as im only 47!! now i cant believe I have to go threw the whole procedure again as the surgeon wants to resection again!😢 thanku for your concern. have you had the same surgery?
@varunb828 жыл бұрын
Nick Christofis ohh...I am so sorry bro to hear about your ordeal. I will pray you get better. My father is unwell n most likely its Ulcerative Colitis. I was just thinking worst case he might be asked to go through a resection. Listening to you n others I will not suggest him to go for a resection. I think diet control is the way to go. I watched many videos on that. tc buddy
@gennadylovesme51938 жыл бұрын
Varun B please!! if your dad really needs the surgery and you have a great surgeon with a good reputation and he does keyhole then go for it!! If your dad never smoked cigarettes I don't think he would have any complications!! see i was a very heavy smoker! 3pkts a day! I didnt have enough oxygen going threw the resection therfore it formed a stricture!! so if your dad is a healthy man besides his bowl problem I would probably talk to your doctor! now as for my hernias I put on 15kg this year cos I gave up smoking after the surgery and it tore my stomach!! hope it all works out for your dad and I aswell will pray for him.✌

Had this done 3 weeks ago for bowel cancer. I had lymphnodes and surrounding tissue removed as well. Not too. Bad when I woke up due to the epidural. 24 hours later the pain sets in. I'm just about feeling human again now
@maitlandjennifer14 жыл бұрын
It wasn’t too bad , being on a Dilantin iv, but the when I had to get up a few hours after surgery that was horrendous. They actually used staples on me to re attach the rectum to the sacrum. I had my sigmoid colon resected. Caused a tremendous amount of adhesions as it was an open abdominal surgery
