This house should be a museum. It's in wonderful shape. Especially being connected to the revolutionary war through it's owner and used as a hospital during the civil war. Thank you for another great building.
@rockybernard299711 ай бұрын
A Museum! What a grand idea! the first front 2 over 2 part could reflect the Revolutionary period, the second 2 over 2 reflecting the Civil war period and the third reflecting the 20th century - post WWII prosperity, then everything in America starts crumbling. Our future as a Republic is reflected in this historic structure. A Museum would be such a noble end for this piece of living American history. Too bad there isn't a politician alive ready to use eminent domain to preserve something of the people's history. Instead, they tear it all down and erect an insipid, lifeless plaque, like they've done with countless other sites of historical significance to America. But then, that is America at her finest these days.

THIS house is a historic home in a big way. It's from a long gone era, pre- Victorian! Very interesting layout. Designed to let in a lot of light. The amazing part is it's in such good shape. Only real updates are the electric and the bathrooms. It's funny in all these old houses the 'newer' additions are always the parts that collapse and fall apart first. This house really should be saved . I think they started with a house then a year or two later added on to that. I'm sure it had several out buildings that are all gone now. Wow, this is a gem. It would never occur to a 'developer' ( a word I hate) To restore this home and make it the CENTER PIECE of a new development. I'm sure it would SELL, and probably sell FIRST! Kappy when you're in the basements you should always show the ceiling, to be able to see the wooden beams. Their size tells a lot. The doorknobs also tell a lot of a houses age, and also the HINGES on the doors. Wow, again this house should be saved, reused or made into a museum! I can't stand that it will be torn down, of all the houses you've done , historically this is the best!

The entire house that sits on the brick foundation is the addition. The stone foundation is original. When a home goes on the historic register that doesn’t mean it will be rehabilitated. It opens up opportunities for the owner/owners for special loans or zoning changes. It could very well sit there abandoned anyway. Starting from the basement up, repair foundation, HVAC system, complete electrical system, complete plumbing system, asbestos inspection, lead paint removal or encapsulation, new windows, insulation, roof, etc. As a retired building inspector I could go on but you get the picture. If the town took ownership which is unlikely in West Virginia due to economic reasons it would probably still sit abandoned. Thanks for the explore, the editing and the time it took to post the video, much appreciated. Looking forward to the next one.

@rockybernard299711 ай бұрын
The impression I got from your tour, is that this dwelling began as 2 rooms over 2 rooms, as accessed by that first staircase off the front door. That transom was so generous -a knock out! Later, (but in the same century), another wing (brick built)of 2 rooms over 2 rooms, though I'm unclear what was on the ground level on that first addition, with it's staircase (the 2nd one of the house) tucked discreetly behind a door on the back wall of the structure's first perimeter. Then, a third addition (appeared stick-built)was that 'modern' kitchen and some rooms above it, now collapsed. That basement even speaks to phases of building, from the fireplaces surrounded by fieldstone walls to the basement walls constructed with brick. That landscape will soon be swallowed up by a sea of rooftops as far as the eye can see, with annoyed people coping with controlled, internment camp-like living. Sad when these vistas become the rare 'diamond in the field' but it's happening. This is such a sturdy structure, she's gonna create some heated language when the wrecking ball begins they work, but maybe a quick strike from a directed energy weapon will save them some time and effort. Another priceless gem you've shared with us. They were talented and clever, our ancestors that built this nation. TY, Kappy, for what you do. You do it so very well.

Spectacular place!!! This house deserves a total restoration beginning with demolition of that ugly addition! I love the doors in this place. Those doors definitely give away the time period it was built even though I have seen houses built after 1850 with the same style doors. That second staircase didn't really look like a servants staircase. It reminds me of the two staircases I saw in a house recently that were basically the same. I was surprised there wasn't more graffiti. If I lived in that area, I would take spray paint and paint over that ugly stuff!😅 Somewhere in the school curriculum there should be a place for teaching appreciation for these types of places so kids won't so readily paint stupid stuff on the walls or vandalize. Thinking about that main graffiti message on the walls that is in several places, that must mean that you are doing a great job documenting these old places!😂 You definitely are a great young man and I always enjoy seeing what you will find next!!

The little outbuilding was likely an icehouse. The original home would have had a “summer kitchen” outside where they cooked to keep the house from heating up in the warm months. The one room in the basement with the big fireplace was the kitchen they used during winter - that room is called a “Keeping Room.” The room in the basement that’s off by itself and has a big fireplace - that was probably for the home’s slaves. Being built in the early 1800s in WV, they probably had quite a few, sickeningly. It’s a beautiful home, wish it could be saved. I’d put my kitchen in the basement in the keeping room and tear off that horrible newest addition that has caved in. Thanks for documenting this beautiful building for us

As beautiful and historically significant the house is, who would want to move in, or open a museum, or assume the maintenance responsibilities? I assume that most mansions are conceived as personal dream houses, built my the most successful people to enjoy their final years. Subsequent generations have different dreams. Kappy"s videos of these architectural masterpieces, and plain old farm houses, are my favorites. Your attention to detail, without the drama of who died there, etc, allows me to soak it in. The woodwork and flooring is beautiful. And, the bricks!!! The artistry in this home will be never-more known to anyone, unless - unless they are fortunate enough to find your video Kappy. The rear stairs were used by both servants and family for various purposes such as: when guests were in attendance or it was closer access at the time. (I was a docent one summer at a former historic era home (Oakland’s Mansion, Murfreesboro, TN)). It appeared to me anyway that the second cellar was an add-on may have been created sometime between or just after the Civil War. I say this because of the appearance of the rocks and cement used to build it. In all likelihood, it was a kitchen added onto and later upgraded. Just a suggestion… Oh Kappy, I’m crazy about bricks from this home’s era up to the 1890’s! What an interest it would be to hear the walls notes on both wars, just before and after. This is beautiful ! Thank for showing us. It’s so amazing that it was built before power tools (and indoor plumbing) and so sad that its history will be lost.

Surely someone goes in these old house to take things that are salvageable. Thanks for another awesome tour! You are the best!

I notice the additions don’t holdup as well as the original homes.

This house is still in very nice shape for being that old. It has withstood the test of time even the basement. Don't understand the stairs that went no where though. Some nice wall paper and wood work, love those doors with the panels that ran up and down instead of across. I would hazard a guess that the out building was an out house judging by the distance from the house and being built back in the 1800's, they didn't have running water back in those days. lol Thanks for sharing and you have a great day

Not an outhouse - no hole in the ground. Probably an icehouse.

I loved seeing the interior of this beautiful home. Thank you, Kappy. I wish it could be saved and restored…especially the original part.

In my opinion, this is one of the finest homes you have visited to date. The simplicity, yet elegance of it is truly amazing. Structurally, it appears to be in fairly decent condition and well worth saving. The people responsible for its demolition should be ashamed of themselves for destroying this "historical jewel" of America.

Have to agree! Definitely one of my favorites but I have some possibly even more neat ones on the way!! Thank you for watching!! :)

You do a really great job and I enjoy everything you post. This particular home actually "touches my soul". Not only is it a great home, it also has a wonderful historical significance concerning the people who built it, lived in it and occupied it. If a group had been formed to save and restore it, and I knew about it, I would have contributed a decent amount toward its preservation and restoration. It should be our duty to save and preserve our historical past.

Its a crying shame but thank you for making sure there is a record of whats left of peoples pride and joy that once was before it becomes another cookie cutter of modern day.

Knew l needed more coffee-l read colonial instead of colonel! I hope the inner architecture can at least be salvaged. Would sure doubt that those cheaply built tract homes will be standing in 150 years! Sad that this lovely, historical home will be gone for good. Great work, Kappy-thanks! Hi, Ruby!

This house reminds me so much of Norborne Hall, a historically significant property in Martinsburg West Virginia where i lived for close to seven years. It too was built in the early 1800's, with Flemish brickwork, really so many details shared by the two houses. What people don't realize though is how expensive it is to heat and cool these very old houses, they have no insulation to speak of. Plus they have knob and tube wiring, which is very dangerous what with all our modern electrical gadgets. Just love this house though, i'd live there in a heartbeat!

They don’t need insulation with the 12-inch thick brick walls. Wiring is a huge concern though

They had so much fun! I smiled the whole video. They did great bowling and playing the racing game; however, Mr Tahir should stick to bring a passenger! 😂

I wish someone would come in and take some of that beautiful wood work and put it in another house to live in
