Chuck Sullivan, son of Pats Owner Billy, backed the tour which was a financial disaster. Some reports said Sullivan's losses where equal to his net worth. He put up Foxboro Stadium as financing for the tour. The team and the stadium would eventually have to be sold, eventually to Victor Kiam. A few years later team was sold to James Orthwein. The stadium fell into Bankruptcy and Kraft purchased it. Not allowing Orthwein to break the lease, he would use the stadium as leverage to but the Pats.

Los Angeles almost got an expansion franchise in 1998. After the Rams and Raiders left for St. Louis and Oakland respectively, there were plans by two groups to get here in Los Angeles to get an expansion franchise One group was led by RD Hubbard, who intended to build a new stadium just off the San Diego Freeway (I-405) that was in a lot of ways very similar to the plans for SoFi stadium in Inglewood. The other group was the Coliseum Commission who wanted to bring an NFL franchise back to t a renovated Coliseum, which the NFL was very much against at the time. Unfortunately, the league went with Houston as the next expansion franchise and it would be at least another 15 years before the Rams announced they were moving back and that they would be building their own stadium.

Before they had a stadium of their own, the Boston Patriots played home games in Birmingham, AL, San Diego, and several Boston-area locations. In January, 1970, owner Billy Sullivan threatened to move the team to Birmingham unless a stadium became available by March. The Boston Patriots renamed themselves the New England Patriots and played the 1971 season at the newly-built Shaeffer Stadium in Foxboro, MA. There is still a team called the Patriots in the Birmingham Unified Youth Football Organization.
@davidlafleche11425 жыл бұрын
Billy Sullivan had his faults...but it took a lot of guts to keep the Patriots in Massachusetts. Birmingham knew about the Fenway Park situation (that was 1968). They offered Sullivan a brand-new, football-only stadium. Sullivan said, "No." (He did not "threaten" to move to Birmingham. He only went there because of a scheduling conflict with the Red Sox.) Sullivan somehow managed to scrape his pennies together, and build the CHEAPEST permanent stadium ever: only $7 million. It had it's problems, but did have the best sightlines in the NFL. Every seat had a perfect view. Best of all, Sullivan paid for it himself. To this day, Boston is the only city in the U.S. in which all sports facilities are 100% privately financed.
@barryrogoff67645 жыл бұрын
@@davidlafleche1142 That's not how the Boston-area sports media reported it. Billy used the threat of taking the team to Birmingham in an attempt to get funding from the state but the best politicians money could buy didn't care about pro football. What actually kept the Patriots from moving was the donation of the land on which to build Schaeffer Stadium by the owners of Bay State Raceway, the "trotter" track on the adjacent land. I went to many games and concerts at what was later called Sullivan Stadium. Once they got the plumbing working it was great, as long as you remembered to bring a seat cushion. The traffic was so bad that getting there, getting parked, watching a game, and getting home again was an all-day project. I miss those overcooked but delicious sausage subs they sold along Route 1.

@@barryrogoff6764 My dad said he went to a couple of games there, and he almost got killed in the men’s room; only 2 sets of bathrooms under the bleachers of each 50 yd. line. The $7m facility was just a glorified high school stadium that they’d build in Texas today. All metal bleachers except those near the 50 yd. line. Also, there was talk around that time of putting the Pats in NH, but it never materialized. The Bruins and Celtics would’ve built a new Garden in Salem, NH if the town’s voters didn’t reject the issuance of bonds in 1983.

Damn....a couple months ago I was thinking that a team called the Phoenix Firebirds (because that is what a Phoenix is in mythology) would be awesome. Didn’t know this almost happened.
@rwboa224 жыл бұрын
It could still be a reality. Remember, the original Charlotte Hornets moved to NOLA and became the New Orleans Hornets. A group of businessmen (including Michael Jordan) gets an expansion NBA team to Charlotte (Bobcats). Years later, including a stint in Oklahoma City (in the wake of Hurricane Katrina), the NOLA team becomes the New Orleans Pelicans and Michael Jordan gets the Hornets name and pre-NOLA history back; the Pelicans owning the NOLA/OKC history. As a "bonus", OKC now has the former SuperSonics (OKC Thunder). If the NBA brings a team back to Seattle, then either the SuperSonics or the Sea Lions would be appropriate. Thus the possibility that St. Louis can get an expansion team, and later the Arizona Cardinals can change owners and become the Arizona Firebirds -- the expansion St. Louis franchise becoming the Cardinals again.
@jaredeiff72204 жыл бұрын
The Phoenix Firebirds was the name of the minor league baseball team that played in Phoenix for many years. It's a cool name but very repetitive and not very creative kind of like the Houston Texans which they had used before and Dallas had used twice once in 1952 that eventually became the original Baltimore Colts and in 1960 as one of the original AFL teams which later became the Kansas City Chiefs.
@rwboa224 жыл бұрын
@@jaredeiff7220, much like the New York Islanders was originally was going to be called the Long Island Ducks after a minor league hockey team that played in Nassau County before the NHL team was enfranchised. Imagine you order a Italian Sausage, it will cost $44 to get one ordered and that’s in Hawaii alone! ALONE! Imagine that! As for the ticket, it will cost $6,000 for a single front row seat and what if they host a Super Bowl, that will make it impossibly expensive, hovering at $89,000 for the same single front row seat! Los Angeles Rams is one example that they had to endure 16 hours of flight from Los Angeles to New York City to London.
