Twirlypen PSN Having a team in London is retarded. It’s market for American Football is below average, plus they would have a stupid home advantage, and a giant road disadvantage. Which essentials damns them to mediocrity unless they have a complete All-Star like team made up of several pro-bowlers. The people of London are practically guaranteed not to care either, why would they? They always have a sport to follow with soccer (fùtbal) and the only real person that world actually care is Roger Goodell.

Walter Payton was a member of the ownership group that was trying to get the St. Louis Stallions into the NFL. After it fell apart the Denver Broncos changed their logo from a horse's head to a running horse. Payton accused the Broncos of stealing his group's logo. Now that I have seen the Stallions logo, I have to agree with him.

Crazy thing is when the deal for the expansion team in St. Louis fell thru, no one really knew what the team would have been called. I had a friend who work at a local sports merchandising company which had the contract for the Stallion apparel. When things didn't work out they were told to destroy all of the merch by the NFL. Of course, that didn't happen. And on rare occasions to this day, you'll see a random St. Louis Stallions jersey, t-shirt or ballcap.

Toronto doesn't want football. Honestly, I think that I'd go to Montreal before Toronto. It's not an easy call since Montreal has had its own issues with supporting football, but Toronto had its chance to support NFL football with the Bills series and didn't. Their attendance is at the bottom of the CFL. But Montreal has a stadium that, with some modernization, could easily handle the NFL, and they seem to like football better. Basically, the NFL kept turning down interested Atlanta parties in the 60's so the ATL turned to the AFL. the NFL got wind of it and changed their tune. Several teams wanted to move to ATL including The Broncos, Chiefs, and Cardinals and Chargers but couldn't for many reasons. After wine and dine, the mayor of Atlanta chose the NFL and Rankin Smith became the owner after a 9million dollar franchise fee.

@@eighthave owner Jim Speros announced they'd be the Baltimore CFL colts, but the NFL successfully filed an injunction against that 2 weeks before the season began. So really they played that first season without an official team nickname. After losing the appeal, they were officially re-named the Baltimore Stallions. They actually did really well, won the grey cup, had huge attendance numbers....until the NFL came back to Baltimore in 1996 then the CFL "wasn't needed" anymore. There was a proposal for them to move to Houston in 1996. But instead the CFL decided the U.S. expansion wasn't working and bailed on it. Nicky Styles except that the Packers are located in the smallest city in the NFL, but they’ll never leave Wisconsin. There are also only 32 teams that are spread out across all of the US, so if your state doesn’t have a team, you typically find the team you’re closest to and stick with it, even if it’s based a couple hundred miles away.

You can thank The Jacksons terrible "Victory Tour" for the reason that New England is still there and not in St. Louis. Chuck Sullivan, son of Pats Owner Billy, backed the tour which was a financial disaster. Some reports said Sullivan's losses where equal to his net worth. He put up Foxboro Stadium as financing for the tour. The team and the stadium would eventually have to be sold, eventually to Victor Kiam. A few years later team was sold to James Orthwein. The stadium fell into Bankruptcy and Kraft purchased it. Not allowing Orthwein to break the lease, he would use the stadium as leverage to but the Pats.

Los Angeles almost got an expansion franchise in 1998. After the Rams and Raiders left for St. Louis and Oakland respectively, there were plans by two groups to get here in Los Angeles to get an expansion franchise One group was led by RD Hubbard, who intended to build a new stadium just off the San Diego Freeway (I-405) that was in a lot of ways very similar to the plans for SoFi stadium in Inglewood. The other group was the Coliseum Commission who wanted to bring an NFL franchise back to t a renovated Coliseum, which the NFL was very much against at the time. Unfortunately, the league went with Houston as the next expansion franchise and it would be at least another 15 years before the Rams announced they were moving back and that they would be building their own stadium.

Before they had a stadium of their own, the Boston Patriots played home games in Birmingham, AL, San Diego, and several Boston-area locations. In January, 1970, owner Billy Sullivan threatened to move the team to Birmingham unless a stadium became available by March. The Boston Patriots renamed themselves the New England Patriots and played the 1971 season at the newly-built Shaeffer Stadium in Foxboro, MA. There is still a team called the Patriots in the Birmingham Unified Youth Football Organization.

Billy Sullivan had his faults...but it took a lot of guts to keep the Patriots in Massachusetts. Birmingham knew about the Fenway Park situation (that was 1968). They offered Sullivan a brand-new, football-only stadium. Sullivan said, "No." (He did not "threaten" to move to Birmingham. He only went there because of a scheduling conflict with the Red Sox.) Sullivan somehow managed to scrape his pennies together, and build the CHEAPEST permanent stadium ever: only $7 million. It had it's problems, but did have the best sightlines in the NFL. Every seat had a perfect view. Best of all, Sullivan paid for it himself. To this day, Boston is the only city in the U.S. in which all sports facilities are 100% privately financed.
@barryrogoff6764
@barryrogoff6764 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidlafleche1142 That's not how the Boston-area sports media reported it. Billy used the threat of taking the team to Birmingham in an attempt to get funding from the state but the best politicians money could buy didn't care about pro football. What actually kept the Patriots from moving was the donation of the land on which to build Schaeffer Stadium by the owners of Bay State Raceway, the "trotter" track on the adjacent land. I went to many games and concerts at what was later called Sullivan Stadium. Once they got the plumbing working it was great, as long as you remembered to bring a seat cushion. The traffic was so bad that getting there, getting parked, watching a game, and getting home again was an all-day project. I miss those overcooked but delicious sausage subs they sold along Route 1.

Also, there was talk around that time of putting the Pats in NH, but it never materialized. @rwboa22
@rwboa22 4 жыл бұрын
It could still be a reality. Remember, the original Charlotte Hornets moved to NOLA and became the New Orleans Hornets. A group of businessmen (including Michael Jordan) gets an expansion NBA team to Charlotte (Bobcats). Years later, including a stint in Oklahoma City (in the wake of Hurricane Katrina), the NOLA team becomes the New Orleans Pelicans and Michael Jordan gets the Hornets name and pre-NOLA history back; the Pelicans owning the NOLA/OKC history. As a "bonus", OKC now has the former SuperSonics (OKC Thunder). If the NBA brings a team back to Seattle, then either the SuperSonics or the Sea Lions would be appropriate. Thus the possibility that St. Louis can get an expansion team, and later the Arizona Cardinals can change owners and become the Arizona Firebirds -- the expansion St. Louis franchise becoming the Cardinals again.

The Phoenix Firebirds was the name of the minor league baseball team that played in Phoenix for many years. It's a cool name but very repetitive and not very creative kind of like the Houston Texans which they had used before and Dallas had used twice once in 1952 that eventually became the original Baltimore Colts and in 1960 as one of the original AFL teams which later became the Kansas City Chiefs.

Imagine you order a Italian Sausage, it will cost $44 to get one ordered and that’s in Hawaii alone! ALONE! Imagine that! As for the ticket, it will cost $6,000 for a single front row seat and what if they host a Super Bowl, that will make it impossibly expensive, hovering at $89,000 for the same single front row seat! And before y’all go tearing my head off, no I ain’t hatin’ on the *NFL* either. Especially considering that I have been a dyed in the wool supporter of the *Cleveland Browns* since the days of *Bernie Kosar/Ozzie Newsome/Kevin Mack/Ernest Byner/Frank Minnifield/Hanford Dixon* (to name a few of my favourite all-time Browns) as well.

KC has no real official claim on the St. Louis market since there was already an NFL team previously in St. Louis. But a lot of former Rams fans since the team left have been following the Chiefs more.

When the Seahawks and Buccaneers came online there was originally a plan to have 4 teams come in with one in Toronto, I believe was called Toronto Stampeders and a Hawaii team called the Islanders. At the time there was a lot going on and pressure from the World Football League. When WFL folded, I think the plan for 4 teams went away.

I truly don't think Toronto will get a team because the CFL (backed by the Canadian Parliament) will block the attempt

The NFL has been really pushing for Mexico City and London getting a team

I gotta agree. London seems absolutely ridiculous. All the travel for everyone involved and the time difference is just too much. Just keep it how it is. So teams and their families can visit the UK from time to time. The tourist shine will wear off fast if there’s a permanent team there. And Mexico City is a hell of a lot further away than a lot of people realize. And Canadian teams in the NFL is a goofy idea too. Especially in Toronto and Vancouver. They have the Bills and Seahawks already.

@@jpmnky Dallas to Mexico, slightly under 3 hours; L.A. to Mexico city is 3 hours, Chicago to Mexico city is 4 hours, NY is 5 hours from Mexico ( same as from Los Angeles to NY BTW ), Boston 7 hours from Mexico, Los Angeles to Boston???? 7 hours

The expansion should be London, Spain, France, Germany. You make them an expansion at large, and flip them between the AFC and NFC each year as to not burden any other division.

Not going to happen. It cost too much in travel from the mainland United States to foreign countries. It cost $2.1 billion for one single regular season game in a foreign country. Plus it’s bad for football players to be in the air for 8 hours, plus additional domestic flight to New York City if teams are not from New York City region. Los Angeles Rams is one example that they had to endure 16 hours of flight from Los Angeles to New York City to London. It took too much tolls on their body and it’s not worth it to expand to other foreign cities in other foreign countries.

@@pantherzone2008 2.1 billion?????? What! 🤣 Make your new years resolution to stop smoking dope. Also, people travel overseas all the time. Under my plan, your average NFL player would not have to fly overseas but a few times in their whole career. Plus, with clever planning, even going from the West coast to Germany can be done by scheduling the week before on the East coast, and then having them fly straight there for the week, and then put their bye week on the third week. All very doable I assure you. Even the foreign team can just play their games in lots. 4 there, four in the USA repeat. All they need is a second home base in the USA . Very workable.

I've been pushing hard for a team in Mexico. The people in that country loves the NFL, and it would make sense to put a team in Mexico. I feel the NFL should get the Chargers out of LA and move to Mexico, if they don't want them in San Diego.

The problem is that you have to offer the tickets at a price that can be paid by the fans while paying the players the same salaries as US based players. Average ticket price to a Liga MX game is 500 pesos (~$26). Can a team be successful charging 1/5 the price of ticket and that doesn't even start to get into luxury boxes.

I’m from Alabama. Biggest football fan state. We got Alabama, Aurburn, Jacksonville, Troy, Mobile. We got close I think twice. But I believe Alabama would make a good team in the NFL. Playing teams like the Falcons, Saints, Cowboys, Dolphins, Panthers, Buccaneers, Jaguars, Titans. Plus we have a beautiful state which will bring in a lot of tourist and I’m pretty sure we would bring in money. I mean people get excited when they beat us anyway. But I’m still shocked that we don’t have an NFL team.
