Propagating Anthuriums? Why Not?
Hey Sweetlife-ers! Welcome back to another plant care adventure. Today, we’re setting up the Totem Planter-a smart indoor gardening system that helps you grow houseplants, herbs, and even microgreens using an app-controlled setup. Stick around for plant propagation tips, nutrient mixing, and lighting hacks to boost your indoor garden success!
Setup Overview:
We’ve already assembled the Totem Planter in a previous video, so check that out if you’re curious about the full setup process. The system uses an app where you can control the lighting and watering schedule for your plants. We’ve configured ours for 14 hours of light daily and watering every six hours for one minute.
Nutrient Mixing & Water Prep
Let’s talk about nutrients! The Totem Planter uses a two-part nutrient solution stored separately to maintain potency. We’re adding 12ml of Solution A and 12ml of Solution B into distilled water-this avoids pH balancing hassles. The water runs on a continuous cycle, so watch for any color changes and clean as needed.
Planting & Propagation Experiments
We’re propagating houseplants, including Anthurium seeds, pothos, peperomia, and more. For Anthurium, we’re experimenting by planting both the fruit-covered seeds and cleaned seeds-let’s see what works best!
We also prepared soil pods by soaking them for 10 minutes. After cutting small slits in the pods, we inserted plant cuttings. Pro tip: Place trailing plants like string of turtles on the sides and upright growers like monstera in the center for better light exposure.
Microgreen Module Setup
We’re adding a microgreen module with alfalfa seeds. After pre-soaking, they’ll stay covered with a humidity dome for three to four days until roots form. Then, we’ll adjust the water flow rate since microgreens need more water than houseplants.
Lighting & Final Adjustments
The system’s adjustable grow lights are set for maximum coverage. We’ll monitor how the plants respond and tweak as needed. The trellis feature can support climbing plants or be mounted on a wall for display.
That’s our Totem Planter setup and first planting experiment! We’ll update you on plant progress in a few weeks. Have questions about propagation or indoor gardening? Drop them in the comments!
