As someone who used to work at an engraving shop, if you put masking tape over the section you want to engrave the laser will cut through it and the wood and allow you to paint and just peel the tape out afterwards.

Just a thought for you. If you change the order of operations for the sides, and engrave first, then paint inside the engravings, then sand the sides to prep for stain, it’ll be a little easier and still get you the desired effect. Additionally it’ll allow the lacquer to cover the paint in the bottom of the engravings as well.

I have a similar touch screen saved into my cart. Haven't bought it yet due to my concerns it would not register movement well. Wish your video showed a bit more of that part but you still encouraged me to go forward with the project

In my next video I plan to go into more detail about the software. In the end you can always add some felt stickers to the bottom of the miniatures to make them stand up a bit more for the sensor. This would also help protect the plexiglass. Glad to hear you’re going to join the touch screen community. Hope I answer more of your questions in the next video.

When you move pocket holes to the inside the screw only has a small bit of wood to hold onto. If you dont move the screen often then this shouldn't be much of an issue. For me I wanted something I knew had a stonger connection.

Gentle note here! For those of you who are Macbook users- This infrared touch screen is not compatible with Mac OS, the driver support for this product is nonexistent. Alternatively there is an application you can purchase but will set you back roughly $100 USD just to use this effectively. Great job on the video, very creative!!

Foundery is great for digital miniatures. I am doing some research now on the physical miniatures. For now Arkenforge has a touch screen option and I hear they are going to be releasing an update next year some time that will fix some of the bugs.

You could have put down painters tape before doing the laser engraving. Then apply the gold paint, when dry remove the painters tape. Easy clean.

Does the plexi glass add a lot of space between the map and the minis. Did something similar and I have a massive gap where it’s really unusable rn. I definitely used thicker plexi glass so maybe if I swapped it with something thinner

The thicker plexiglass might make the miniatures look like they are floating above the map. I didn’t notice any issue with the size I got. Going smaller is always easier than trying to go bigger. Best of luck to you. :)

I've made a similar project once at the "minor" difference that I integrated the computer directly in the table . (I had a laptop with a broken display so ...)

@@LandofProva Not false but in my case, I have an easy access to a private NAS from it, and since it's not big files (my biggest map files are on the 40-60Mb range), the old Wifi-N card of this old laptop is enough. (And for larger files, I still have access to a couple of USB ports). And since the said table is only used for TTRPG, I hooked a second creen (with touchscreen, the first one don't have that) on the DM spot to the same laptop since it both has HDMI and VGA ports

Glass is a better long term solution, but it is more expensive. I am looking forward to seeing how it holds up myself.

I went through an did this for my own table and tbh we stopped using the touchscreen parts because i use the digital maps mixed with printed and hand made terrain. as soon as you use anything other than just the minis, things break down in usability.

As a rule you shouldn't use windex on TV's not all tv's have a glass layer as the top layer. Many have a layer of diffusing film to give less glare and windex can have bad reactions to it. The best cleaner to use on a screen as a rule is a 50% concentration of alcohol and distilled water. And the acrylic you use here was pretty low end and still fairly pricy. If you went to a glass cutting place you could have ordered a sheet of polycarbonate for about the same money, wouldn't have needed to cut it, and would have had a nice surface that would have been less scratch prone. Having said all of that this is a super cool project.

How does this work if you have multiple screens. I use a mini pc to host roll20 on my mainscreen and a tv table as second screen for my players. Can you lock inputs from the ir screen to a specific display?

The frame usually isn't locked to a display. Technically you could have a 4k screen and have a 1k touch screen work with and 1k area within that 4k real estate. It's all about calibration. There might be issues where you need to recalibrate if you switch between TV only and TV+extra screen. But that depends on the touch screen frame.

Great question. You will need two computers. Otherwise you will be fighting for the control of the mouse. The second computer does not need to be very powerful. I am using an $80 mini computer to run the touchscreen.

I have seen the touchscreen get confused with a number of miniatures in the same spot, but not as badly as you might think. I hear the Arkenforge group is working on this in the next release.

So I just watched this because I have my own table that is very similar to yours. I saw the preview and thought maybe I could find some ideas how to make mine better. Turns out we have the exact same IR array. However I could never get it to track minis as well as you. You clearly have something on the bottom of your mind I assume to help? What is that? I've tried placing acrylic buttons (supposed to be nearly invisible to IR) where when you press the mini down it would break the beam but with limited success. The issue I always have is when multiple minis are close (which is likely to happen in a fight) it can't distinguish them from each other. How are you doing it?

I've just learned by heart that 1 inch is 2.5(4) cm. And a foot is roughly 30cm. That's easy enough to get a rough idea of the size of an item. TV sizes are given in inches in my country anyhow. 😊

Thank you for subscribing! The Arkenforge Software is what I show in the video with Fog of War. You can set the Fog of war to only show a radius around the mini at all times or to keep revealed. I love Dynamic Dungeons but they dont have a Touch Screen option yet. I plan on releasing videos in the future to cover how to use the software.

It all comes down to the maps you can find online. As long as you can find the digital maps it should work. Because it is using a tv with speakers you could easily add some music to your board game as well.

Cool video, but please make sure to *not* clean your TVs with windex. If you have one with a cheap coating you can partially mess that up and end up with a blotchy image. Always and only use screen cleaners for any digital screens.

11:34 im not sure if you are trolling, or actually believe cleaning an LCD/LED screen with WINDEX is actually a good idea. That's a great way to damage the coating on those displays and make it look like crap. Also, i *reeally* hope you are not using a paper towel to wipe it. *cringe*. You should only ever use cleaners that specifically state they are safe for Screens (TV/Computer) and use a Microfiber cloth to wipe it down. I would recommend something like WHOOSH! screen cleaner. It works really well to clean dust, dirt and even light marring.

Please do not clean your LCD screen with Windex, it has ammonia among other things which can take off the anti-glare coating on most LCDs. Instead, use an LCD cleaner, most of which are a 50% dilution of isopropyl alcohol.
