It's ridiculous how people have been saying her choice of music was not very politically correct. It's music from a movie based on a very tragic historical event. It's not celebrating the holicost, but rather memorializing in honor of the victims (not the perpetrators). The music actually works well for her style of skating.

Her expression is fine for the music. You don't need to smile in a song that was in a movie about the Holocaust

she connects to the music and the audience way more than any skaters I've seen in the past 3 Olympics. This female commentator doesn't know what she's talking about. Just because her face is solemn (well it is Schindler's list after all) that doesn't mean that emotions can't carry from your body

By the way, the female commentator in the video is Tara Lipinski, former youngest Olympic Champion in ladies single figure skating. On 9 February 2014, by winning gold in the team event at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Yulia became the second youngest Olympic gold medalist in ladies figure skating history (at 15 years 249 days), six days younger than Tara Lipinski was when she won the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, but 4 months older than Maxi Herber was when she won Olympic gold in 1936 Winter Olympics.

***** thanks I didn't know that was her! That really shows me that just because you can be an Olympic champion doesn't mean that you have a good eye for art. I've seen Tara Lipinski when she won that gold. She won it fair and square but there is a pretty good general consensus that Michelle Kwan was much more artistic. And btw when she won that gold she did not "connect" to the music or the audience. Like most people, she skated TO the music, whereas Yulia skated WITH the music.

thanks! Sometimes I think Americans in general are not very knowledgeable about what the Russians have contributed to the world in terms of art and literature, and how much they owe them for being able to share the pride of being a westerner. I mean, how many Americans have read War and Peace or The Brothers Karamazov or even know what they are about? When they think of Russia they automatically think of "communists scumbags" that's why they have a bias against the Russians. It's really a shame.

Pavel Komissarov Tara also discriminated on Mao Asada as well when Mao was 14 years old and ISU didn’t allow her to competed Olympic in Torino and Tara always commented something to gained Mao Asada so many times because she worried about Mao Asada to take her place like Michelle Kwan as well

One thing to say about Yulia connecting with the audience.....Steven Spielberg wrote Yulia a hard copy letter after the Sochi olympics. I'm quoting from Spielberg's letter: "February 21, 2014. Dear Yulia, I am writing to tell you how moved I was by your gold medal performance as the little girl in red and accompanied by John Williams' music from my film Schindler's List. You brought such dignity in your remembrance to the Holocaust through your soulfully inspired routine. I have three sons and four daughters, and there wasn't a dry eye in our house in California as we watched you on television."..........Now if that's not a connection with the audience, then nothing is....not to mention the standing ovations she got in Canada and Sochi.
@mitch19872

Not suprisingly the USA commentators try to find something to complain about. The fact that she got a standing ovation pretty much shows she connected with the audience. Glad she won a gold in Sochi and will win many more in the future. Her spins are insane.
@Rieksfier
@Rieksfier 10 жыл бұрын
I agree with you her spins are better than any I've ever seen. She will medal in 2018 singles for sure. It was too bad she had a couple of hiccups in Sochi because she is fully capable of pulling off a gold. Just look how relaxed she was for the Gala performance. That being said we get it, it's an international past time to bash Americans, but before you do, you have to look at who is making the comments. It's Tara Lipinski, a gold medalist up there not some random sports commentator that presents 40 different sports. Tara is not being any more critical of the skaters than their coaches or the skaters themselves would be. They point these things out because the average person watching the performance on TV does not pick up on the stuff that really does matter to the judges.
@mitch19872
@mitch19872 10 жыл бұрын
Rieksfier yeah I think if she didn't do the team event first she would have won a medal in singles and maybe even the gold. I also read that they flew her around the country trying to avoid the media in between the team and singles events..no wonder she was tired. But she won the team gold which is just as good as the singles IMO. and yes I know everyone bashes the USA but they spent a lot of the games bashing Russia.The cold wars been over for almost 25 years lol. Just search on youtube for Putin meeting the Canadian and American athletes...unreal how different the 2 meetings were. Lastly I agree Tara knows what she is talking about I just disagreed with the part of Yulia not connecting with the audience as the ovation proved otherwise.
@orangewelliesinc2836
@orangewelliesinc2836 6 жыл бұрын
Your first comment specifically called out "USA commentators", as in plural, when really it was just Tara making ONE comment about Yulia not connecting with the audience and music...not exactly a complaint. The two commentators praised her throughout her performance, but of course someone has to jump on the one negative thing Tara said, and turn it into "US commentators complaining...." Their job is to discuss the performances, not kiss asses. I don't want to hear commentators being politically correct. I want to hear their honest opinions , based on their personal experience and knowledge. That's why they're there..

Their job to comment on her performance as it's happening, not chit-chat about generalities. The female commentator is talking way too much and 2) the guy starts yapping right during her emotional closing! It's amazing that Yulia, at such a young age, is able to skate with such emotion... She has to be the best I've ever seen in so many years... I don't remember Tara skating with such difficulty and or grace... So I'm not sure what she talks about when she says connection with the judges or the public.. In my opinion, she transmits more than most skaters... She feels the music ( excellent choice), she makes the audience want more... What more can we ask.... She is awesome!! Simply the best!!!!

Sweet Yulia, she is beautiful, with that look so sweet and serious at the same time is very young; the comments I've heard she are of a very mature girl for her age. I love the way that she skates, so smooth, agile and flexible that it seems to be very easy when she is actually doing something very difficult. That's a merit. I love. It's my favorite skater. Russia really has to be very proud of their skaters, how great they are!. She chose by herself the theme and music of her two programs this season, the short program -You Don't Give Up On Love by Mark Minkov- because she loves that song; and for the free program, Schindler List by John Williams, because they also likes the movie and watched it many times. And she was really succesful!

The girl in the red dress/coat ❤. Her face expression fitted perfectly with the theme song. She showed sorrow, maturity, sadness and innocence. To me it showed how a child was facing all this death and sorrow, while her innonence still danced on to find joy and happiness, but ended tragically. She gave a beautiful performance 🙏🔥

Furthermore she a beautiful young girl with a lovely face, very slim but not tiny as someone says in a previous comment because she is of normal stature. Tony L I agree. Facial expression..omg. she obviously didn't understand or comment about the music choice and dress. Stephen Spielberg wrote her a letter expressing his admiration to her routine as the ittle girl on red from Schindler at Sochi. He thanked her and praised her . He told her how moved he was and hoped to meet her and her family some day. Tara still holds the record to the youngest winning gold at the Olympics figure skating, so Yulia must of been a bit older. If she compared against Tara she eould of blue her out of the water. If Sascha Cohen was on snd didn't mess up her and Yulia would be leave no one watching without years in their eyes.. Lol.

English speakers are absolutely right to pronounce her name the way they pronounce it. It is just a normal thing when names get "twisted" when getting into another language. It has nothing to do with respect or disrespect, it simply has to do with the nature of another language. Do you think all Russians pronounce English names correctly?

No but they should try it is their profession to call the play with accuracy and correct pronunciation. It is a sign of respect to at least try or to get the name correctly. To some they are insulted if you don't give effort. Its whats always taught in language schools or like when traveling. Foreigners will appreciate you more if you give effort to try to speak in their language asking for direction instead of always trying English first. I think the same way here.

Only a young and ignorant commentator from Canada can interpret the perfectly adequate mood of Youlia dancing to the music from a film about Holocaust as "lack of connection with the public". To be fair, it is necessary to tell that "Schindler's List" about the help of the German businessman Oskar Schindler to the Polish Jews during a Holocaust was directed by Steven Spielberg from USA. Nevertheless, the Russian figure skater Yulia Lipnitskaya used the ingenious choreographic language to tell about the depth of the tragedy of the people of Europe during World War II.

She's so cute! Her flexibility is amazing! Once she master a better flow to the music and the high of the jumps, She'll be the next Super Star for sure!

Hold your horses there. She is the complete package already. If she jumps higher, she'd be doing quintuples.

I don't know about quintuples...maybe quads first. Anyhow, I think she needs to polish her program little bit and she'll be flawless and I'll enjoy her performance much better.

She's skating better than Asada has ever done in her career. Its a huge shame while Asada cannot manage to execute a complete program without falling and messing up, Lipnitskaya managed to give a clean and well composed program. The other thing,to note that Lipnitskaya has a remarkable ability to be fused with the program's choreography.

Typical Americans talking over her routine & then even worse not telling the audience the performance is about depicting the little girl in the red coat from the movie Schindler's List which is a very moving & tragic story.
