I forgot to mention in the video how much salt, water, and vinegar I used. I didn't measure it out exactly, but about 1 cup of vinegar, 5 cups of water, and 1/3 cup of salt. Boil the salt in water to ensure it has dissolved completely. Allow to cool, then etch.

2 questions 1st how long was it in the solution and 2nd if you had started the electric tape a little down the shift wouldn't it have removed some of the excess material for you?

I love the fact that ypu made an awesome touchmark in the last video, but you still said "i can do better" you never disappoint sir. Keep up the great work!

This fantastic! I tried making a touch mark much like your previous one but had the same issue with only one of the letters coming out (probably due to my sloppy stock removal leaving a slightly convex profile). I really like simple and to the point your videos are.

That so simple and awesome. My wife just got a silhouette machine. Now I just need to figure what to make!

I know this is old, but still the best of the few videos around. I was going to use 20% vinegar essence which was out in the store, but they had 20% citric acid. I skipped the water and added a good dash of salt straight into it, since 20% is still enough water to saturate with some table salt. Hooked up 12V and 30 minutes later I was just amazed... Thank you for your video. It works great. I used a handcut mask of electricians tape.

I'm glad it worked out for you! I make etched plaques (similar to this touchmark, but larger and in brass) for my Rocketeer jetpack commissions. I got it to work about half the time, but for some unknown reason the saltwater and vinegar method just refused to work. I ended up switching to ferric chloride and it was vastly improved. If you have similar issues in future projects where it just refuses to etch, give the acid method a try.

@@DavidGuyton thank you for your fast answer ❤️ good to know. I'd prefer to switch the material and stay environmentally safe. 🤗

@@ThomasHeyen You can still be environmentally safe with ferric chloride. You can reuse it over and over, and when you do need to clean up or dispose of it, you can neutralize the acid with baking soda. You do, however, need to take more precautions while using it, like gloves and goggles.

A suggestion I learned from wood chisels: It can be easier to line the punch up straight if you shape the handle of the touchmark punch a bit. Cutting (or etching) a small groove along say, the top edge is one way. If you start with hex stock then it's simple to just align the etching with the existing bar geometry.

Any tips how to make such a fine stancil with out a vinyl cutter?
@DavidGuyton

If you're super careful I suppose you could cut it by hand. I don't have that kind of skill though. I did try to do this directly onto the metal with a Dremel tool in my last attempt. It came out ok, bot nothing like this one.

How long you put the steel bar in the acid solution to get that depth of etch? And have you try use another acid solution like ferric chloride? Just wondering how much the differences of solution uses would speed up the process

I only ever used this method since it's much safer to handle and dispose of. I think it was in there for about a half hour.
