Touge Max, PS1 Racing Game

Cave's racing game series' first PS1 installment is kind of rough on the eyes, but the gameplay is solid enough. It's worth noting how pretty much everything in the game is in English, even tuning the car's settings. It also has a peculiar PR mode, where you see advertisements for Japanese racing magazines.
The Gymkhana mode allows you to place cones freely on a track which you (or a friend) then have to race on, trying not to hit any cones and passing through them in the right order. It's like a mini track editor.

This game is known as Peak Performance outside Japan - in the U.S. it has tie-in with the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, giving it replication of the parts of the track (before GT2!) and removes the advertisements. I wonder how the magazine companies pay Atlus to have the ads placed in a game. I never seen this kind of advertising in a full retail, professionally developed title before.

If you guys want a good PS1 touge racer: Play Touge Max 2 or Touge Max G, they are both extremely good and huge improvements over this.

I live in Brazil, and back when I was a child, my father knew one of our neighbours, which was a japanese-descent guy (it was a highly japanese-populated neighborhood in the city of São Paulo) - This guy went to Japan, to see family I guess, and when he returns he brings a Playstation 1, that he bought in Japan along with something like 10 games, that he must have chosen by random. The cover arts and black japanese CD's, what a delight. It was one of the coolest gifts that my parents gave me. I don't have all of this first original first 10 games now, but some survived, and Touge Max was one of them. It had Tenchu, Elemental Gearbolt, Side by Side (other Japanese race game), Metal Slug 1 (loved the japanese cd package). Legend Of Mana was one of this first 10 original games that also leave his mark. Thanks for this vídeo, so much great memory memories.

How can I play this game? On ePSXe, it has some "NegCon" controller on the options screen and, when I try to race, nothing works except for the gearing and the view. How do I set up the controller?

@@mattsephton - It was 6 years ago, man. It probably has to do with some of the options or whatever. It's not a good game TBH. Also, this game has a NTSC version called Peak Performance.
