If it's Mercury, which owns both Gemini (3rd) and Virgo (6th), exalted in 6th (i.e. 6th lord exalted in own house too), how can the toughness be? I see Mercury as friendly, diplomatic and sensitive; it symbolises intellect, how could competition and strength translate there? And could it be that part of the self has interest in/at heart to be of service to others - that could reconcile the "self" vs "others" topic ? (Like people practicing medicine for instance)

Dealing with horrible, self-serving people has been a theme in my life. If I let them, they’d use and discard me callously, with no regard for what’s right or fair or consideration for who I am and what I need. So I’ve learned to avoid people unless they are useful to me. The environment has conditioned me lol to be super intentional with who I deal with, because unless I have an agenda or plan of what I want to do with them, people bring me nothing but problems.

its simple. its the same reason why the 3rd house is the house of siblings and peers and also the house of competition and rivalry. Women are peers with Women. Men are peers with Men. Men and Women are different from each other. So men will compete with men over manly things, women will compete with women over womanly things. Don't think that women are more competitive with women then men are with men. Actually women are MUCH MUCH MUCH more cooperative with women than men are with other men. Just look at war and sports, and wonder where that came from.
