One thing that people often don't pay attention to, or totally dismiss is that the reason she was able to keep her composure and ask politely for a glass of water after everything she had just been through was also due to Pai Mei's teachings to behave like a human even while under severe distress (the rice bowl scene).

This is also a concept taught in the internal arts. When your enemy presents a weakness, if you must draw back to gain power then you will lose the moment. Therefore when the opening occurs you must be able to generate all the power you need to strike without withdrawing. This is also known as coiling power and the practitioner must know how to generate tremendous power from the current position they are in without changing. You will find this in Bagua, Hsing-i and correct application of Tai Chi.

Absolutely love the rice scene. Cruel as it seems, you can really see how he has come to care and be proud of what she's achieving. Tough love to an extreme.
@Violetcas9711 ай бұрын
That love is even further exemplified when you look closely at exactly what he does and says. In saying “If you want to eat like a dog you may sleep outside…” he’s telling her in no short terms “you are better than this, you are STRONGER than this, and you and I both know it.” After he throws away the food she’s already “tainted” with her filthy, bloody hand, he gives her *his* bowl and demands she try again, and is very obviously proud of her when she overcomes and uses the chopsticks and maintains her dignity through the pain.

The training is stupifyingly wrong-headed. It's a great way to destroy your hand. There is a slow and steady methodology though. Lightly hitting a bag of rice. Then hit it harder. It's a great example of a good writer. QT shows you. And that's the biggest thing that other writers don't understand. In Star Trek Discovery, I remember laughing when I saw a small middle age woman kick the crap out of a Klingon. The difference is you see that Beatrix was trained by a demi-god of Kung Fu. You were with her as she bashed her hand into the wood for her training. Within the context of that universe, it makes sense. In the Star Trek example, there was none of that, so even in a universe with such imagination as Star Trek, it is still comes across as ridiculous.

I’ve always wondered if that overhead shot of her lying next to the grave was an homage to The Crow, which has a similar shot for its own main character.

Great movie. Quinn certainly paid a nice homage to the old Chinese kung fu flicks and I saw growing up.

Not sure if I'd like Pai Mei as my teacher, but I definitely like him as a character. And what a character, that one! 😂❤

My friend, this was just supposed to be one "example" of tough training, this is not an "All About Kung Fu Training Manual", lol.. but this is just an example to hint push given by master to enhance the mindset, will power, the "Spirit" of going beyond pains and own limitations. I understand your taste and understanding of subject but i believe, eventually, its not always torturing the body, its rather acting out own raw passion in systematized way as directed by master. I hope that helps.

Now, this is kind of strong female character that we can so gladly get behind & vouch for. There is an instant connection with the Bride. Something, that the modern female characters especially those with Disney & Marvel have completely failed in.

Without Pai Mei and his intense training program, she could never come out of the box in one piece. Discipline does pay at the end of the day…

I'm on a low carb diet atm but the way Pai Mei sniffs that rice makes me want a bowl right now Also, how good would you feel if Pai Mei looked at you as he does at 1:44 and 3:27?
