You forgot to mention the sleep deprivation. For the last stage they chant straight for 7 days without sleep of food.

Great that an ultrarunner presents marathon monks. I’ve been saying for years that trail runners should check them out to up their game. It’s silly to see ultrarunners do zombie walks and suffer in pain caves when marathon monks solved those problems with their spiritual techniques thousand years ago. Been practicing like them for 20 years 👌✌️

It's also worth mentioning that these monks are supposed to be Buddhist monks, but such extreme practices that deliberately put one's life in danger or even commit suicide go against everything that the Buddha taught and are forbidden practices for monks according to the prescribed rules for monks (Vinaya). What these marathon monks are practising is a uniquely Japanese cultural phenomenon, especially the act of committing suicide. With all that said, at a personal level, I have a huge admiration for what these monks have achieved.

An incredible challenge. Do the Monks that only complete 1, 2, 3 years of it stay on as Monks? Or are they done? Nate

How long does one pair of those sandals last? Or do they just repair them on the go when something breaks?

I heard somewhere that every day they would go through like 5 or more pairs or something like that
