Keiki is one of my favorite final bosses ever, even outside Touhou games. Not only her theme is an absolute banger, but her backstory is amazing. From her point of view (which might actually be right, the game never chooses one side), she's the good guy of the story, fighting YOU to protect the human spirits that worship her from the evil beast spirits that had them slaved and under constant torture. And her theme shows that determination. She's not fighting for selfish reasons, but to protect others. And on top of that the fight has that super epic moment at the end, where the army of the animal spirits come to your aid, giving you the power up needed to fight through her extra level final spell card. ZUN really outdid himself on this one.
@tomlynmathewsjr75142 жыл бұрын
What's interesting is that ZUN likens Keiki to a rogue AI. She's doing exactly what she was asked to do, but essentially has the human spirits serving a new master. Most of the endings point out that both Keiki and the Beasts (specifically Yachie) are not to be trusted.
@stellanova43082 жыл бұрын
Keiki is very reminiscent of Shinki for this reason, I think. Just like Keiki, Shinki was simply protecting Makai from you, the invaders. She sacrificed her life to protect not only her home but also her daughter. Both of their themes display this willingness to give their very beings for the thing they swore to protect, and that's why this theme is probably my favorite. Even outdoing Border of Life.
@SilverAlex922 жыл бұрын
@@stellanova4308 I know right?! And I love the cinematography of the fight. With shinki as the background changes to show how your fight and her spell card (the one Byakuren uses) setting the makai in flames. And with Keiki when the spirit beast army come to your aid, I love how ZUN timed out that perfectly with the opening notes of the them platying once more. Howver while at first those notes are intimidating, the second time they sound desperate and solmenm. Keiki knows that by this point she probably cant win, but her theme song shows her absolute determination to go down fighting to protect her humans. And thus she starts blasting you with Idola Diabolus, while the beast army tries it best to keep you alive. Truly an amazing final boss fight, from mechanics to music to an amazing plot.
@scatoletta66182 жыл бұрын
Are people really getting excited with this fight? Like have you ever played another game, watched a movie, read a book, or experienced any form of entertainment outside of touhou?
@SilverAlex922 жыл бұрын
@@scatoletta6618 Yes I have! Thats why I love this fight. I wasnt expecting a narrative as good one in the 17th entrie of a shoot em'up but here we are. First of all the game is a gigantic tribute to the two biggest dystopian classics, 1984 (representing the Beast's dystopia, a place where humans are ruled through fear and violence) and A Brave New World (representing Keiki's cult to Idols, who rule over humans through pleasure, removing away their free will by virtue of giving them everything they need at any time). Secondly is the themes in play during the battle. In most touhou games the final boss is objectively wrong. Sure they might have a sad backstory, or a justified reasoning, but Reimu and co has to fix the mess. On touhou 17 its completely gray vs gray. Is Keiki an evil god breaking natural order? or is she a bening but misguided god protecting the souls of her believers from eternal torture? From her point of view its clear that she thinks its the latter, and sees you as the villain for being a human who sided with the beasts and are threatening the safety of her believers. And on top of that you add the fact that in buddhism the animal realm is the place where the souls of animal abusers go to suffer a karmic punishment being abused by animals, and the fact that the animals at play at the game (jappanese eagle, otter and wolf) are extinct animals, in no small part thanks to us humans, then you're left wondering if those humans Keiki is protecting are even worth protecting. Maybe she IS indeed breaking natural order by not letting their souls cleanse through karmic punishment. And on top of all that you add a banger of a theme that perfectly encapsulates the solemn themes at plays and Keiki's growing desperation to defeat you, all ending in a crescendo as the beast army comes to support you through her extra level spell card [Idola Diabolus]. So yeah. I love the fight. It has an amazing backstory, the plot of the game is surprisingly depth and mature, way more than the usual touhou game, and from a technical standpoint it is an amazing final boss battle with awesome music and the usual great touhou gameplay. Its okay for you to not like the fight or the game, but calling it a lesser form of entertaiment is an insult to ZUN and the work he did with the game, especially when you consider that the dude is the writer, music composer, artist and programmer of the game.

Same but regarding Touhou as a whole. Idolatrize World is my second favorite song, after U.N. Owen Was Her? If U.N. Owen didn't have such a big significance, it would actually be my favorite.
@DarkAngel637252672 жыл бұрын
Both tracks are epic and sound amazingly good when played together (well they're basically the same theme). They're also among my favourite touhou themes. I have the hypothesis that they'd also sound great in some sort of mash up with Jelly Stone, but it seems no one has tried to execute the idea yet.

Idolatrize world and other touhou songs always had something that bothers me... I sometimes felt like they put everything to the beginning and lose its impression shortly after. But falkkone is so good he somehow adds the drum and bass and keeps the atmoshpere as epic and fresh as it was in the beginning.That's why I love his covers so much
