Touhou Danmaku Kagura has failed. Did it need to though? This video should explain a bit about it.
Touhou mobile games are known for being rather controversial, gacha game messes! Touhou Cannonball came before, and failed. Lost Word is still living, but rumors place its' state into question. Danmaku Kagura is the most loved among them, since it's just a rhythm game and few gacha elements... at least noticible ones! You can collect Aunn Komano, Reimu Hakurei and many many more. Using your characters to get highscores is a goal, yet that is kinda it.... at least the Touhou music nice! Will Touhou Project survive this destruction?! (hint hint; the answer is yes.)

I say personally I had a good time with the game but there were a few issues 1 Progression: trying to progress in the game story or by leveling up your characters was a pain because the story you send a set of cards and to chibi characters to gather resources for about 8-12 hours just to progress to the next story event. But for leveling up characters it was rough until a event starts they would normally force you to grind events to actually get resources for them to keep you playing the game 2.Lack of content: At first the song list was pretty low this got fixed over time but very slowly adding 1or 2 songs every new event. 3: The power gap and grading system: As I said you can level up characters and cards to in the game which lead to different power gaps. Some events was against other players and bosses which it didn't matter if you full comboed a song because if your character power is weak you would still receive a B or C for example

i remember having so much fun with this game, and i was to have gone for one final ALL BRILLIANT before the game died. unfortunately, i could only get as best 1GREAT, and my phone screen had a bad input freeze on a attempt that was looking good. that was what convinced me, that it wasn't worth going for. and i actually cried, when it did finally shut down. it hurt in a way i can't explaining. and while i am happy that the rebuild for PC is becoming a thing, it still does not forgive the fate that the original was forced into. i still miss this game.

Danmaku Kagura was a bit too easy in regards to setting its difficulty. You also don't really have to aim for the score. You're more meant to just "All Brilliant" the songs, having your characters upgraded more than the cards you get in the gacha. Cards don't necessarily help you defeat the boss showing up in all the songs. It's still sad though. There was one unique mode that pretty much put in a short bullet hell segment in the chorus of a song. It was pretty well made, but that was all there was, apart from the new songs it had been releasing before it was shut down.
@j0sh277
@j0sh277 Жыл бұрын
As someone who will play the game till the end, I feel the reason salses were low was simply becuase there was no reason to buy anything. Even if your score was low, most people just aimed for an "All Brilliant", and most cards had similar effects so the only difference was fancy art(which is good enough for me), meaning getting "the best possible card" was very easy. Getting the highest score rank was also not very hard, requiring only a small fraction of the maximum possible power, so there was not much reason to upgrade cards.

the gacha really was just to pull for your favourite waifu. and to top it off, they were super generous with the gacha system by giving away so many free gacha tickets to use so you essentially don't even need to spend to pull. just save those tickets to pull for your waifu. as long as you're playing the events, you are bound to have enough tickets and the gacha rates are pretty good too. 3% chance for an SSR(unlike FGO's abysmal 1%). so yea there really wasn't a reason to spend money in the game other than to be in the top 10 scores/getting your SSR to skill lvl 10.

Since no people have mentioned the atrocious event ranking system, I'll weigh in. For context, I liked ranking in rhythm games so I got a few 10+ titles in bandori before retiring, also played deresute and mirishita. Anyways; the game had infinite auto-plays and as far as I know no macro detection. It also limited the amount of energy you could refill per day, and had no paid option to do so. Pretty easy to see how this is disastrous if you want any form of competetiveness in your events. The events also didn't give you titles based on your placement, so going for anything over top1000 was useless. Instead all the titles for flexing came from song rank. So instead of running two competitions for two types of people, they decided only one was valid. They also split events into 2 parts where the second part added new characters for bonuses, but it also made every event have 2 songs so its fine, maybe. On to non-event issues then. It feels a bit evil to even say but the game was too generous, people could spend a pretty reasonable monthly fee for the passes and get showered in 10roll and guaranteed SSR tickets every month plus it gave paid gems that could be used on limited time guarantee banners. Gacha tickets were plentiful in general tbh and the rates for SSR were 4% baseline (most gacha have 3%, the evil ones have 0.5%). I was a pass user for about 6 months until I realized the game wasn't going anywhere so I stopped spending (and playing). My assumption is that Aquastyle really didn't want to lean into the monetization traps that most gacha games have, so they tried to remove/change things they didn't feel ok doing, but maybe didn't understand why the practices are so common. Another thing that tilted me was the building part, doing all the errand missions and stuff was just so boring, and you were also limited to only 1 errand at the start, making it feel even slower. Grinding heroines to 100 was also pretty slow and didn't feel super rewarding either. I don't have much to complain about when it comes to the rhythm game part, but I also don't have much to praise it about either, which is bad. Sometimes it felt like the game designers didn't have a fully realized concept either. (Separating holds into blue/green comes to mind, sticking with one would have made more sense because it's not like release timing is a thing rhythm gamers go woooo over. It's either there or it isn't.) Also on a personal note, I felt like we didn't get enough metal compared to other genres which demotivated me. Since blowing their budget on marketing was mentioned, it's probably not the only thing they overspent on. I absolutely adored their liveshow events with stage performances but those things are costly. They also hired several big names for the voice acting, and big names cost more even if they're only doing a few lines (Uesaka Sumire as Sumireko, Ayaneru as Koishi, lots of established Idolmaster seiyuu and so on.) I still absolutely adore the concept of a touhou rhythm game, but this attempt wasn't it. The news of an offline version being a possibility is new to me though, I would love that. It's also possible that game preservationinsts are working on keeping it alive in some form as well. We'll see what happens. tl;dr: Aquastyle were more focused on being good guys than being profitable.

I’m still playing the game but have not been following the news, so this was a genuine shock for me.😢 I’ve always wanted this kind of Touhou rhythm game and it ticks a lot of boxes for me, especially on the song selection (though I wish they had more from the circle Felt…). The game is honestly really fun to play and I spent hours on end trying to get the perfect score, especially back in the old version where you had to get a perfect on Extra to unlock the Lunatic difficulty. I was wholly addicted to the game. I guess we could see when things started to change when they made unlocking Lunatic difficulty easier before just making it available from the get go in order to make it more accessible for players. In any case, what I think hurt the game the most is that it’s a “skill based” game where you can pretty much ace the songs without having to rely on the gacha. Said gacha does help for people with less skills like healing your life, increases attack power, continue the missed combo and so on, but for pro players, in which there are many, they don’t really need those gacha to win, so they don’t really need to pay. On top of that, the game is also really generous with free currency for pulling gacha with many events that give out super rare freebies. So yeah, it’s sad that the game fails likely because it’s being “too generous” to its players that it could not monetise on its pay-to-win aspect. I can see a lot of love poured into this game with high production art and assets, so many licensed artists and musical groups coming together (which would cost a lot for the license, too…) and all the story and lore they crammed into the game - a real treat for a Touhou fan like me. It’s sad to see all that will be gone soon… Well, I had fun while it lasted and I will enjoy the game right to the very end. They just released a song by Marasy with the new Lunatic difficulty “X”, which I’ve tried and failed miserably😂. I’d love to beat that song to send the game off, if possible. Oh man, this is sad…

You should have researched more about the game. I think another big reason that the game died was mostly because of the fact that most, if not, their only source of profit were from the kagura pass and gacha currency. A correction, the characters aren't simply cosmetics, if you want to achieve something that can be displayed on your profile, it's often skill but some require high scores so that's where the characters come into play, some character cards (called Mitama cards) help you improve your skill and some cheese your way in unlocking LUNATIC. Yes, it probably deserved to die but that's mostly because it was only region locked, but I think that's for the better or worse---agree or to disagree, although you pointed out they did have big ads (most I'm not aware of other than the sidescroller ad on a train station), but I'm not sure I would call them big as they were mostly, if not, all in Japan only. It's too soon to estimate the longevity, but as for Arcadia Record, they set the standard of "big" advertisements, I can't list them all but one thing is for sure, they had so much advertisements, they even had this thing on twitter called "hashflag". Anyway there's really more; - There's clubs which you can customize and have a place for you and friends to hang around, it also has a chat where you can talk with your friends and as well as flex the SSRs you get as everytime you get one, it will be announced in the chat (just like Azur Lane with SRs and SSRs in pub chat). Just like being able to customize your club's place. - You have your own home to customize and you can get props from completing quests in this world quest thing, there's more things about this but basically it's worth doing these as they give you a decent amount of gacha currency (and props to help customize your home). Oh and doing world quests can unlock you Danmaku Mode songs, as it's a mode that replaces the chart attacks with an actual schmup, there's nothing much to tell more about Danmaku mode. - Ever since Ura Kagura came, you can now have a song in the main menu (As for my choice, I chose SAMURAI GHOST GIRL KILL KILL!), but you'd have to clear the song (unsure if it's only in EXTRA or it can be in HARD) so it was a really good update, you can jam while staring at the good artworks from the mitama cards you can choose to display (I guess it's good? I personally am biased because I'm on the part of the fandom that jams to Touhou arranges). - More info about the mitama cards, as you get them to mitama level 3 (or basically increasing the max level to lvl 60), there's bits of lore about them, I can't read Japanese so I sadly skip them (as well as the events' lores). A recent update increased the max mitama level, where it grants you another ability that adds to your first mitama card abilities during gameplay (ie my Junko has increased score ability while my first mitama card; Clownpiece can heal you (and if max mitama, another ability that attacks the character in the song). - Heroines, or the two characters on the top left during selection of mitama cards before playing a song are needed and they help you increase score (and I think other stats as well depending on the character, I use Remilia and Sakuya). Extra info, you can dupe them once they reach level 100, so you can have something funny like double Remilia or Sakuya (and basically having a bias team, 5 mitama cards of Sakuya and both heroines being Sakuya). - Alongside of displaying 2 achievements that you are proud of, you can display your favorite heroine (or character) or your favorite mitama card as your profile picture. Just a tidbit I want to add. It's more than just a rhythm game, it is one yes but the game has a following, they feature some big names in the community, the game had big-ish events (ZUN as always present which makes their live events even more special), with their 0.5 anniversarry having RED ALiCE perform on Tokyo's underground flood control tunnel (which was epic to watch), including other circles that are present in the game perform live. It's just sad that all of these features that I mentioned are basically free. They should honestly follow the steps of another Touhou rhythm game; Touhou Spell Bubble. I would gladly pay to play this game again, I don't want to stop playing this game after 1 year already. I had fun playing this game and watching people that I listen to like beatMARIO and lily an play this game (and live as well). It's a game that deserves to live on and fill that spot of Touhou having a rhythm game that can be easily accessible.

There are many rhythm gachas that are really successful so the fact that the game's a rhythm game is not such a big factor in its downfall. The whole replayability of these games is that new songs get added every so often thus leading to people trying to perfect combo them.

The main problem for the game is that is a gacha where you don't need to roll to be able to beat the content. There are many Mitamas (that's how they call the cards, just like the Storycards from LostWord) easily obtainable from events, so there was no real reason for the player to spend money (unlike basically every other gacha, where some content is made for you to summon for a specific character). In Japan, gacha games are way more popular than in the global market, they simply like how it works; it's usual that just the japanese version of a game makes more money than a global one, so if not even japanese players were spending on DanKagu, a global version would have died weeks after it's release, since gacha games are mostly hated and people from overseas don't spend as much as JP in a game. Also, since the game's music is copyrighted and stuff, there are not that many videos of the game compared to others, which also is a reason why it didn't became as popular as it could. The production cost was so high; LostWord for example, has kinda low production cost, so even if the game doesn't make as much money for a while they could easily live unless they really start hitting low numbers.

It will have a new story but keep all the cards and music from the original. It'll also be translated into English and Chinese and might even get a switch port if the crowdfund goes well enough. Also, d4dj, another mobile rhythm game that has some Touhou remixes, received a small but noticeable spike in players around the time Dankagu shut down. i often have a special game type in my heart, what i coin "chuni-dori" (bandori x chunithm). aka any barline slider rhythm game. what I'd say dankagu did exceptionally is their mapping. it felt like i was playing mai mai or chunithm more than bandori or sekai with the memory of patterns (or arcaea for that matter). sound track diversity is unmatched in any rhythm game. no osu can't compete, well it barely can in soundtrack diversity. I've yet to play Chunithm religiously, but dankagu has had one of the best maps I've played b4, native faith marasy dankagu edit master 27. and the strictness of notes felt nice, as you needed to know which hand to place (a very similar game in that manner is arcaea, with strict hold locations) i just wished there was an emulator or comparable game. and no, sonolus is too index heavy, same with dancerail, bandori has no catch notes and same with sekai. it's a void that won't be filled. thanks for a moment of bliss dankagu

i think part of the reason why Lost Word and Pokemon Masters has gotten success is that their world building works with the gacha model. Alternate existences of a character you know, but is altered due to a branch in their multiverses goes great. Jasmine in a Furisode with Celesteela? Works within the lore, as Celesteela is based on Princess Kaguya. An alternate Koishi that completely drained herself of her memories by reading too much of the subconscious? Definitely touched on in fan works. Here, it just feels like it is the same shit with a different dress like it is on bandori. Bandori works cause of the wide variety of music that it touches, and when it comes to music, the wider the selection, the better the result.

Danmaku Kagura EoS situation is a bit weird. Compared to Cannonball which EoS because of low popularity, DK is actually succeed in Popularity. The problem is just the Monetization, as it's just Gacha to get stat, so people who would roll are either want to get more score, or they just want to collect card. When compared to other Touhou Gacha game where Gacha gives Characters and variants, DK gives all Characters they released, only just equivalent of Story Card/Crafting Essence. I won't say DK is really failed game, but more of a great game in wrong place. It's better as just Rhythm game, not Gacha game. (As of written, the game's EoS would happen in 8-9 days) With that said, on good news, there were QnA from Dev that Players could ask questions from Forum, and one of the most asked question is about "Making game Offline version", and they said that because of high demand, they considering trying to make it if they can. Also in EoS day, they would have a stream/live as Goodbye, so if possible you can join in the live.

"rhythm game players who want to play touhou songs" bro that's literally me since forever, I bought groove coaster just for the touhou songs, and every touhou DLC pack on taiko. Also I don't knows if Zun doesn't allow the original actual OSTs from the official games to be on other games or something, because on every rhythm game where there's official touhou content it's just remixes, I hate that, I just want to play all the original songs like they sound on touhou. Also I always wanted to play this one, I just hate playing games on a cellphone, and tried installing it but my phone is not compatible so I never got the chance. And finally, I have no idea what a gacha is....

I've only knew the game existed because of an youtube ad, probably because I was seeing some japanese videos a lot at the time lol I like touhou and rhythm games and being able to play a touhou rhythm game seemed awesome to me, specially since a lot of the songs there I love. Also I always wanted to play a good touhou rhythm game and Danmaku Kagura seemed to me to be the one. Downloaded through QooApp and played it a little bit from time to time. However the game never managed to get me hooked to played it a lot, like Tapsonic TOP has managed to get me to played it for 1 year+ (almost 2 by now). I think the reason is because it was just on japanese. Considering how I got hooked into getting characters and getting them stronger on Tapsonic to reach higher scores and play on the weekly ranked for rewards I think Danmaku Kagura could probably got me as hooked if not more. However the game has so many menus and so many things to try to read that my weak japanese can't even bother to try to understand - I would probably spent like 30 minutes to just try to read one sentence after searching for kanjis. So if there was an option to have it on english I would have probably understood all the systems, effects and items and grinded it out and played it a ton. I'm very sad to see it go, the few times I've played it I've enjoyed it a lot. It was fun and I would have loved to have grinded it to get higher scores (since I was never able to beat the bosses when I've played, they always had some health left when the song ended).

I am a firm defender of gacha games (except ones with systems like Genshin). Sad, this game was pretty much everything I wanted. Gacha, Touhou, Rhythm game, everything. Im not into the idol irl stuff like Bandori or PJSEKAI, and many IP’s that I do enjoy just aren’t popular enough to even get a game, or have and failed. Also Pokemon Masters is amazing, I believe that Mrwhosetheboss video was about Pokemon Unite, and was pretty exaggerated. (Also do not compare Piano Tiles to anything lmao. It’s pretty much the laughing stock of the rhythm game community)

Why bother with a generic flat design touhou gacha rythm game when I can play Muse Dash or Touhou Spellbubble? It has better HUD, you can select the unlocked characters with in game animations, and you can add extra songs as DLC (touhou collabs works wonderfull here). Or even better, have secrets inside the gacha system like Trombone Champion. To make a successfull gacha game, is doing something unique and dont copy paste other repetitive rythm games.

I honestly don't know if niche was a problem here. Maybe it was one and I just didn't keep up with this game as much as I could have but... Makes me wonder, if niche really is an issue why is it that Touhou doujin music can be found in packs in many rhythm games that exist? Touhou doujin music is clearly popular to some degree in the rhythm game scene already and people will pop in to play those games just for the Touhou songs sometimes (reminds me of people who said they bought Muse Dash when they heard there was a Touhou update). And even so, there are people who play rhythm games, any rhythm game they can get a hold of, even if it feels like a copy... And surely there was a number of people who would or did play simply because it was Touhou but not a bullet hell (even though I guess the bullet hell/danmaku game mechanic was a thing but wasn't it optional?). Not to mention... Replay-ability? It's a rhythm game. Don't people come back not just for high scores but, i don't know, to play the charts? Casual play? And with updates that should give new characters/cards/ways to score high unless there is a score cap of some kind there is always a reason to come back... I guess it all just really subverted expectations. Poor management and not enough income seems the most likely despite everything. I wouldn't consider myself knowledgeable rhythm games or the demographic though, I'm just really curious. I honestly thought for sure that since DeNA was tied to this that it would get an English release but... I guess not. What a shame, really. I'm bracing myself now for when Arcadia Record eventually sinks and Lost Word is still standing... somehow. And whatever happened to Touhou Dungeon Dive? I guess it was just that unremarkable that no one plays it anymore, or did it die too? I haven seen anyone on the JP scene play it quite a while.

The way Touhou Danmaku Kagura failed is almost similar to Sonic Runners. Both games featured almost the entire cast of characters known throughout the series at the time. Both had elements of Gacha and also had events that brought forth even more beloved characters for a limited time. But the major difference between the two is Sonic Runners got a worldwide release while Danmaku Kagura didn't. Not that it matters considering Sonic Runners shutdown barely a year later. You see, Sonic Runners had a quiet soft-launch in Japan and a few other regions. Because of that several events were exclusive to the soft launch including a few crossover events. When the game finally got a global release various updates started to be added, some of which started to make the game *very* money hungry. At one point there was an update that would spawn a wall of Spikes that forced players to use Red Star Rings to continue if they were playing for too long. Eventually that change was removed but the damage was already done months ago. You see, at some point an update added the ability to pay for specific characters you wanted with either Rings or Red Star Rings. However it costed 2,000,000 to 1,500,000 Rings or 200 to 150 Red Star Rings to pay for the character you wanted which *heavily* relied on microtransactions to obtain the money required for a particular character. Because of the over reliance on microtransactions the game only made ¥30 million per month which SEGA deemed to be a failure despite all the references to past games and characters from said games and shut Sonic Runners down.

I've played the game and I can say that TO ME, some other factors caused its failure were 1. its music game part feels generally odd and out of place compared to PJSK and Arcaea or those excellent mobile music games and there were several fatal bugs at the early launch that caused missing notes which u don't suppose to. And that lost those core music gamers to drop out. 2. the chart design is lame, every chart was almost the same. some will stand out but not many. it's not bad but there was nothing exciting and ngl this problem was kinda solved AFTER their announcement of stopping maintaining the game. 3. I don't think only doing touhou songs is the problem, the problem is that the songs they chose are just not thrilling to a music game and that kinda connects to problem 2 yet still they could come up with better charts when they didn't. Those are kinda regarding the gameplay and they are important to me. I very enjoyED the game but because of those I kinda AFK now.

Points that I want to talk about and the reason why the game died in my opinion. 1. 2:30 character collected from the gacha has passives and effects that can affect the gameplay, characters unlocked by the character pieces affect attack power and hp as you level them up to 100, once you reach to lvl 100 you can spend 500 pieces to get an and copy of the same characters with randomized stats. 2. 4:36 there was much more factors than its replayability of rhythm games, while people see the rhythm games are highscore centric but all gacha rhythm games really different due to it requires chaining and creating a team that make the right passives to be able to get the highscore which requires farming/leveling each unit. Like any gacha thats the gameplay loop, but TDK major failings was the ease of getting a S rank. 2a. S ranks are too easy to get compared to other gacha rhythm games. For example D4DJ I have a team that is off element and at lvl 40 with no 4* (SSR) and I wouldn't even hit an S rank at all. While in TDK lvl 50 welfare units (free unit from events that are SR except for one) could clear most songs in S rank with ease, removing the incentive to pull for new units except for event bonuses. Which makes people to spend less due to the mentality of why spend money while they could just wait and get the welfare units. 2b. Its more combo centric than highscore centric most of the time. People only focuses on the results screen than the score, due to to most gacha rhythm games will not bring you an S rank at lvl 1. Which also into the reason why people aren't investing themselves to leveling the units. -end of line-
