Why do I think 0:43 - 1:05 is a riddle? I mean, I see that the whole sun, moon and elemental stuff is related to Patchouli's ability to cast elemental magic, but...it just sounds so riddle-like. If it is, I'd be pleased to hear an answer to it. :P
@lyrica-live9 жыл бұрын
:D It is~! As the description notes, the original composition of this theme actually contains the Morse Code for "LOVE." Naturally, then, the lyrics should also contain code for "LOVE." The entire song is written to suggest a double meaning of a love story, though not necessarily a literal one. That spell-like bit at 0:40 is a list of poetic epithets that describe the feeling of love: tangible yet intangible, strong yet pure, constantly born anew yet a very ancient concept. It uses all of Patchouli's elements in weekday-order, except you may notice the element "wood" is missing. Well, the final piece of the riddle resurfaces at the end of the song (1:40), where "wood"-- that is, the paper of books-- is implied to be the key to love. In fact, according to the Chinese elemental cycle, wood is the transition between water (nothingness) and fire (passion). And, just as the incantation of words off of paper can "unlock" magical effects, speaking the right words to the right person can "unlock" certain feelings. With a logical mindset like Patchouli's, there is always a lock (a riddle) and a key (an answer) for everything, even for love. Patchouli may be literally in love with books, though: the pursuit of knowledge itself. Thanks for asking~!

*+Lyrica Live* I dunno if you were aware or not, Lyrica, but, trivia: "It's coded in the *air*, decoded just as soon" > air is one of the classical elements > air is also associated with wood in the Chinese elemental cycle ('cuz when can you see a wind most clearly? when it's blowing through the trees)... Hence also why winds are often depicted as green in Japanese games... So that kinda tied into the riddle to me at least.

I find it interesting how you employed the philosphies tied to the Wu Xing into the lyrics. I was always fascinated by Patchouli because she uses the interactions between the forces of nature to get a larger profit, like, for example, when she combines the wood and fire elements she is able to cover the screen in fire which is different to Agni Radiance, which centres around Patchouli and expands but is rather easy to dodge. By using the processes of the Wu Xing in her spells all she has to do is create the force and the elements required and then the elements reacting with eachother on their own do all the work, which is perfect for her considering her poor physical health.

Ahh, haha, I struggled like crazy to find it when I was trying to write it... and I kinda just gave up on trying to sync the words directly to the points... but I _think_ it's this part of the melody: ..."lock IS bro ken WITH A SIN gle to ken, THE key" ..."short LONG short short LONG LONG LONG short short short LONG short" which repeats a few times throughout the chorus. If you look up the arrange called "・ー・・ ーーー ・・・ー ・ (LOVE)" by Shibayan Records, you can hear them sing "pon tsu pon pon tsu tsu tsu..." to the tune around there, so I'm assuming it's there.;;

Been playing Touhou Lost Word recently, and I feel a connection between these lyrics and the "strengths/weaknesses" system. There are 5 Phases (Earth, Wood, Water, Fire, and Metal, as well as No Element) and 3 Essences (Sun, Moon, and Star), and the order of the phases in terms of which beats which seems to stem from Patchouli's knowledge (pun not intended) of these elements. To understand the game, one must first understand Patchouli. (Fittingly enough, I happen to have both regular Patchouli and Hifuu Patchouli. Both are resistant to all 5 Phases.)
@NSAsterus10 жыл бұрын
For the strangest reason, I imagined Patchouli acting like Nagato from the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya from this. It's a very amusing mental image. I've noticed it more and more while looking up characters, but the pictures from GoM always look as if Marisa took them from slightly off to the side while the subject was firing (most likely at her). This would probably mean that she was either standing next to the subject during a duel, got Aya to take the pictures, took them while dodging with [Blazing Star], or my personal favorite, throwing the camera to try and get the shot (pun absolutely intended) and hopefully catching it on its way down.Then there's the fact that Kodacs would probably have only barely made it into Gensokyo, so it is absurdly likely that Marisa had "borrowed" Aya's camera for the shots. (Which seems pretty likely since the quality [though not the color] is similar to Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red)
@lyrica-live10 жыл бұрын
That's not strange at all! Socially reclusive, analytical bookworms-- I'm sure they'd get along great. And by get along great, I mean sit very still in opposite corners of a room reading silently to themselves. (Heh, but I'm really glad you said that; I happen to love both characters very much! Maybe it was the obscure "dandere" theme of the lyrics that made the link.) ...Interesting, I never really thought of who took the pictures! Yeah, I'm going with Marisa-with-Aya's camera; that's definitely the most fun to imagine. I was about to object, pointing out that Marisa herself is in some of the pictures, but then again Aya manages to capture herself in pictures too, so yeah, magical Gensokyo photography is on some other level.

I know it's a double-sided riddle but the spell-ish part with the elements? On its own, I think it sounds AWESOME. It almost sounds like it's describing magic itself, or some sort of artifact. I know it's not meant to(Again, the whole "love" thing), but it really does seem like that. My interpretation when I first heard it and wasn't thinking that deeply about it was kinda like: The lock is one's natural inhibitions, disallowing the use of magic. The key/words is the invocation itself, bringing magic out. The part about the "heavy gasp caught in my chest"? I thought it seemed like it was the magic trying to get out for the spell, but being caught until the proper evocation was used or something lol, and the part about "Words, born of wood and passed from paper, disappear... And like the beating heart beats, repeat, to meet the right ear..." sounded a lot like D&D's interpretation of Wizard spellcasting; A spellbook with your spells, from which you read to implant the arcane invocations into your mind. Once cast, they vanish from memory, as the power of the invocation leaves you to form the spell you've cast. Thus, when the wizard repeats their research and/or re-reads their spellbook, their "ears" - The "right ear" to understand magic - "hear" the hidden meanings, and allow the use of magic once more. I know that's 100% wrong lmao but hey, it's something worth saying I guess
@lyrica-live3 жыл бұрын
^^ That's not wrong at all! Like you said, it's double-sided, so it's cool to see it on both sides! The invocation stuff is pretty directly the magic-based metaphor I was going for -- and although I'm not familiar with D&D, so that particular comparison isn't something I hadn't thought of, it does make a lot of sense, and I really love it when people can find new meaning and come up with their own interpretations like that. Thank you for thinking so much about my lyrics! It makes me happy! Some other thoughts I had about the literal magic side of things is how each specific element is either effective or ineffective against another element. Patchouli talks about this in IaMP, where she analyzes the elements associated with other people in order to decide which attack best to use against them. So I think "the right word aimed at the right ear" is that type of puzzle relating to magic. ^^
