If you're unfamiliar with Touhou or the memes in this video, I will attempt to explain most of the gags. 0:04 - The scarlet mist incident that menaced reaching all the way to the outside world was the trigger for the events of the game 0:09 - Reimu can just fly without wings or a broom, it's normal in this world. She heads out first as the main character while Marisa hangs back at the shrine. 0:19 - Rumia, who is the first boss, introduces players to the idea that the enemies aren't just cute girls, but also man-eating youkai 0:24 - Reimu's shrine maiden accessories are more than suited to handle youkai 0:32 - Despite being a mid-boss, poor Daiyousei gets no portrait nor spell cards to her name in this game, and quickly exits the stage for Cirno 0:42 - "Brainfreeze" here doesn't refer just to the effects of crushed ice, but also to the fact that Cirno is canonically an idiot, as said by ZUN in the manual of Touhou 9. She is labelled on the manual's legend's 9th entry as "Baka", and because of that has been nicknamed (9) ever since. Said circled nine can be seen on the cup. 0:48 - Also Cirno defeating herself with her own spell is a bit reminiscent of one of her spell cards on Easy mode offering her no protection from just standing in front of her (which contributed to her "idiot" labelling). 1:00 - Hong Meiling, the third boss, is commonly described as sleeping on her job of gatekeeper, allowing people to slip into the mansion. Sometimes she's also described as waking up right in time if someone actually tries. In this video she somehow does both. 1:22 - Reimu using a Grenade might be a reference to the "death bomb" mechanic of using a Bomb right when a projectile hits you. 1:23 - (found by Codex Marsema) - Meiling makes this sound in the game every time she moves around. every. time. 1:34 (by Fadillah) - This gag might refer to the fact that Meiling is one of the only characters who canonically use close combat techniques while everyone else uses ranged danmaku. It doesn't help her all that much here. 1:38 - These are the power ups and point collectibles left by defeated enemies, including bosses, and also the noise they make when you pick them up. 1:40 (addendum by @pokechao196) - Instead of going to the items to pick them up, Reimu walks away and crosses the "point of collection", which in the game lets you automatically collect every collectible on screen as can be seen here. 1:48 - Koakuma is the assistant of Patchouli, helping as she can with the library. 1:56 - The books are actual enemies in this stage 2:28 - Patchouli has a weak constitution, has asthma, is anaemic and has vitamin D deficiency from staying inside the library at all time 2:41 - As a professional Youkai exterminator, Reimu has no remorse bullying and exterminating weak fairies. 2:51 - Likewise, as Remilia Scarlet's head maid, Sakuya has no remorse disposing of humans or processing them into meals for her mistress. Oh and she can stop time like Dio. 3:13 - As Marisa gets tired of loitering and enters the stage, Sanae tries to sneak in, but ZUN sends her away, which is funny for several reasons. First off, she didn't exist at this point in the story, she might not even be in Gensokyo yet. Secondly her shrine is a competitor of Reimu's, and she'd love that the Hakurei Shrine become assimilated into the Moriya Shrine. 3:23 - ZUN also liked calling himself in official artbooks as one of the priests of the Hakurei Shrine, which makes him fit to keep the shrine in Reimu's absence 3:35 - "so~ nanoka~" floats over Rumia's head, which is her catchphrase. The Yin Yang orb also flies quite far when hit as seen in the first Touhou. 3:42 - Ok this might be my favourite gag. It's a callback to Touhou 1 "highly responsive to prayers" where Reimu can be hit by her own Yin Yang orb, causing her to lose a life and die with those same particle effects. 4:23 - Marisa's "Master Spark" Bomb attack. It's a big awesome laser that does the job. That's about it. 4:35 - Touhou being a danmaku, Reimu's sprite is much larger than her actual hitbox, allowing to easily dodge the knives without moving. Coming close to projectiles like so is called "grazing" and lets the player earn additional points (points let you get extra lives) 4:42 - Marisa stealing books from Patchouli is a recurring gag in fan works. 4:49 - So is Patchouli having feelings for Marisa (who only has to say her catchphrase "da ze" or just "ze"). Of course it's more of a love hate relationship as she'll chase Marisa when she tries to steal her books. 5:10 (hinted at by SrPelo himself) - Patchouli's boss theme is titled "Locked Girl ~ The Girl's Secret Room". Here Patchouli ends up being literally locked-in! 5:31 (by Fadillah) - Getting hit by one of the boss' projectiles AFTER defeating them and dying is a real risk in Touhou, watch out for that knife Reimu! 5:39 - Reimu and Marisa are rivals, and even used to be enemies early in the PC-98 games. But by that point they've already become friends, also since Marisa is one of the few people to visit Reimu at her shrine. 5:50 - Despite being defeated at the end of Stage 5, Sakuya comes back as Stage 6's midboss to try and shave at least one Bomb off the player before they meet her mistress (yes she literally breaks the 4th wall in the game) 5:55 - Marisa eating bread is a reference to her dialogue with Remilia when they meet in the game, which itself is a reference to Zeppeli and Dio meeting in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. ("Do you remember how many breads have you eaten in your life?", to which Marisa replies 13 because she usually eats japanese food). Ironically, in this video it looks more like a Melon Bread, which is more of a typical japanese food. 6:01 (by Use Moar Meemz) - Remilia smoking is a reference to the fan animation "Silent Stoner in Blue" which is a short parody of the official Touhou Manga "Silent Sinner in Blue" 6:10 - Remilia is the culprit behind the scarlet mist incident. Her plan was to have the mist block the sun so she could come out during the day. Here though she just seems to be having a good time. Also Sakuya becomes distressed whenever her mistress displays a lack of charisma. 6:20 - Well many of her projectiles in the fights do look like big donuts. 6:24 - Reimu and Marisa finally die once, but they had some extra lives it appears. 6:34 - Marisa throwing a star is most likely a reference to her other Bomb attack called "Stardust Reverie" 6:43 - In most Touhou games, Reimu basically go beat up the ass of powerful youkai to set them straight. They usually have good relationships afterwards. Also her pose when crying is her crouching/guard position in the fighting games, which is also hilariously nicknamed Charisma BREAK. 6:58 - Beating the game without using any continues (aka, doing a "1CC") unlocks the Extra Stage and its Extra Boss, Flandre Scarlet, the little sister of Remilia, aged of barely 495 years, and still canonically (one of) the most overpowered character in the franchise lore-wise. To attempt to describe her power, she can move her opponents' weak points to the palm of her hand, and then crush it, instantly destroying them. I say opponents but it also works with inanimate things, like a big meteor. She's basically Shiki Tohno from Tsukihime except she doesn't even have to reach you to destroy you. 7:37 (by 彼岸花) - the art style of this sequence is reminiscent of Fantasy Kaleidoscope, a big Touhou fan animation project by Manpukujinja 7:38 (found by @Zinji) - People and items that disappear from our world tend to end up appearing randomly in Gensokyo. The animation that SrPelo lost all those years ago was therefore possibly found there. (because, since the events of Touhou actually occur in the present, Genskyo is hidden from the outside world by a magic barrier somewhere in Japan) 7:57 (by Codex Marsema) - That text-to-speech voice line and those heads are references to the Yukkuri Shiteitte ne! (Take it easy!) meme that stemmed from a lousy ASCII fanart of Reimy and Marisa's faces. I think I got most of it, please let me know if you got other Touhou references I didn't get. I didn't list the obvious modern references like the BONK or Snoop Dogg.

Don’t worry, this won’t take long. Is this animation based on the first canon of the series? I know very little about Touhou but I know that the first canon is now ended and new started. Could this mean that main characters in the end are basically from the new canon? This might explain why the animation is a storyboard in their world

I mean, technically there's two separate canons: Touhou 1-5, which were on the PC-98, supposedly is mostly separate to Touhou 6 onwards, which are all on Windows. It's mostly because out of every single character in the first five games, only four returned in the Windows games: Reimu, Marisa, Yuuka (who cut her hair short and reappeared in 9) and Alice (who had a wardrobe change, grew a bit and came back in 8), while everyone else is yet to reappear in another official game since. I believe it's mostly because 1-5 were made while ZUN was part of a team, and he likely had trouble getting the rights to all of them when he became a solo developer between 5 and 6.

Yep it's true he asked to help with his games to his student computer club, but even in PC-98 he has was still mostly solo dev (well he once liked to write music for some obscure indie games or even early Windows Touhou era fan games, but it's a totally different story not related to this one). Truth is why ZUN wants to PC-98 to be separate from the Windows era, as he said in one of his reviews with him, It's because he took too much inspiration for plots and characters and mechanics from his favourite media like games, mangas and animes where he was reading or watching or playing at this time and was enjoying it. And many characters, plots or mechanics were mostly parodies or just inspired by it too much. And he thinks there is mostly no use for mostly non-serious PC-98 characters in now more steady Windows's canon (also he didn't want to base his creations too much on someones else ideas like in the past).
