This isn't a metroidvania. MetroidVania is Symphony of The Night game play, where you explore the castle, get upgrades to explore more of the castle freely. This is a simple side scroll with a start to finish point.

I think that Ran being able to be faced tanked is a really interesting detail actually. Her battle in touhou 7 is all about not being overwelled by her flashy attacks and making mistakes because of it. Her spell cards where designed around being relatively easy to dodge if you don't get distracted by the trickery surrounding the threats. So you being able to easily deal with Ran in this game via ignoring all the scarey looking and long, but ultimately not threating attacks and just keep attacking her before she can respond is a fascinating way to adapt her battle style.

they really threw in elements of almost every castlevania game in lol mostly Symphony of the Night because areas and enemies directly correspond to that game specifically. Also I love how Touhouvania 1 was based on EoSD and this game is based on PCB

Ah, this classical creation of both one and two. When I saw the first, I goosebumps of how extremely great it looks and how it matches the Gothic Victorian art style of the previous castlevania. The controls are familiar if you played the games, excluding the additional mechanics for this game. The music is the chef kiss of this series and brings out the castlevania-esk vibe while matching the theme of touhou. We all know how the final boss theme sounds like. The difficulty, if I have to put it. Normal is no joke. If you are new to Touhou and you love castlevania, give Koumajou Densetsu a try.

Whenever I would imagine touhou characters having voice actors, Sakuya would always get Sawachihario Miyuki's voice so I was pleasently surprised learning that in this game, she was actually voiced by her!

I lost it when I learned Marisa was voiced by Ryoko Shintani some time ago because she also voices Galaxy Angel's Milfeulle Sakuraba, who in the visual novels, uses what's effectively a pink Master Spark to clear out enemy ships in the battle sections. IKIMASU!!! HAIPA KANON HASHA!

An excellent in-depth review as usual. I remember having an excellent time with the game, but never finished it because it kept crashing after the Chen stage for some reason... Since you have shown to be a fan of challenging games, then I would love to suggest games like Touhou Genius of Sappheiros or Gensou Shoujo Taisen. One is an RPG with SaGa mechanics while the other is a SRPG with mechanics and animations similar to Super Robot Wars. Both very difficult, but include a deep range of options and mechanics that make them fun to beat anyway. Both available in English.

I just came here since Touhou came back to my line of sight. I sucked at this game hard as I'm simply not good at the bullet hell style, but the Classic-Vania style is down my alley, and I adored it. Never beat the Phantasm stage though. I tried many times, but could only get as far as the Yakumo boss. What really surprised me in this video, was that the first game got re-released at all - I never heard about it. I actually haven't even played it yet. I really hope KD2:SR gets a re-release too.

Megaman 2 sold very well and left a mark on fans of the series. But like, yeah this game has a lotta bs in it. And the reason why this game is absurd is because the team in Capcom that did this did so in their spare time rather than a project that had full blessing from the company.
