Stage 16 Brief:
After Marco Pantani's storming day in the Alps yesterday, today's stage presents him with another opportunity to get time on Ullrich and others before the time trial on Saturday. If Pantani has recovered enough from today he could take up to 10 minutes out of Ullrich. Let's hope he does an Eddy Merckx and storms away rather than just sits in the bunch.
Well it was another long day in the mountains and the excitement came. A three man breakaway went on the first climb of Col de Porte (Heulot, Aldag, and Lotto's Andrei Teteriouk). They built up a lead of over 6 minutes. A small group attempted to bridge the gap but never succeeded. And then came the Col du Madeleine. We were all expecting Pantani to take more time from Ullrich and Julich. The three breakaway riders crumbled, first the Kazak, then Aldag which left Stephane Heulot going uphill slowly on his own.
Then Ullrich showed his mettle when he attacked from the peloton. Only Pantani could match the strength of Ullrich, looking a far different proposition to yesterday. The strategy became clear - to maximise the gain on Julich, who is a better ITT than Pantani. They soon caught Heulot, who looked like he was standing still when they passed.
Ullrich did all the work up the Col with Pantani, looking more and more like a pirate intent on stealing the Tour, sitting, more or less, comfortably on his wheel. It was only once they got over the top that the pair started to work together - both having the same motivation to maximise the gap on Julich.
At the end, it was Ullrich who won a photo-finish sprint - well a sort of sprint. Dutch TV 2 had a laugh about the "sprint by the non-sprinters" - it was a sort of slow-motion job compared to the contests we see between Zabel and co.
The gain on Julich was 1.49 which kept Ullrich in third place 16seconds behind Julich who is now 5.42 behind Pantani. The winner of the day was Pantani. He now has two superior ITT riders more than 5.40 behind him. Over the flat 53 kms course on Saturday, that will be a lot of time to make up.

Je me rappelle comme si c'était aujourd'hui, le col de la madeleine à st françois longchamp, une fusée est passée devant moi c'était marco pantani, il était el phénoméno, un coureur unique pour un destin étrange mais si prévisible. Je pense souvent à lui , à sa vie, à sa mort.
