Great Camp Santanoni is an iconic example of an Adirondack Great Camp. The League was lucky enough to get a tour from Adirondack Architectural Heritage Executive Director Steven Engelhart, who has been intimately involved in its restoration for many years.
From the Sanatanoni website: "Camp Santanoni, located in Newcomb, New York, was built by and for the wealthy Pruyn family, and welcomed its first guests in the spring of 1893. Located in the Santanoni Preserve - nearly 13,000 acres of New York State's Adirondack Forest Preserve - this National Historic Landmark is one of the earliest examples of what became known as an Adirondack Great Camp. Visitors to Santanoni today will find the historic areas of this retreat much as the Pruyns originally envisioned them, along with the outdoor recreation the family adored. Camp Santanoni and the Santanoni Preserve is managed by the Santanoni Partners: Adirondack Architectural Heritage, the Town of Newcomb, and the Department of Environmental Conservation."

I discovered Santanoni this past summer for the first time and absolutely fell in love with this marvel of the Adirondacks. Since then, I’ve camped at one of the campsites three times and visited the place at least once every month. Now waiting on the December snows so I can ski in and do some winter camping throughout the season. Yeah, I sorta think the place is pretty cool.

I actually spent time there when I was a kid.. The Melvins owned it. My Grandparents helped open it up when Art and Helen where there. It was amazing..I actually have one of the original candle sticks..It has a memorable spot in my heart.

Amazing place! My question regarding the Adirondacks is "How did those people, back then, avoid the Black flies?"
