Today we meet Russ, who is a Cattle Rancher and Farmer from South Dakota and who has decided to be a Snowbird. He wanted a practical way to escape the Harsh South Dakota Winter and enjoy the Desert Southwest instead. The solution was to build out a 7 x 14 Legend All-Aluminium cargo trailer as a simple Tiny Home on Wheels.

I met Russ in that caravan in Ehrenburg. A super nice, unassuming guy. I was trying to put up my shower tent in the wind. He saw me having trouble and came driving over on his ATV to help me!

That's classic mid-West kindness and helpfulness! It's in the DNA of farmers because they never would have survived during the homesteading era and during the hard times that can hit a farm, especially on the plains, if they hadn't helped one another. My great grandparents homesteaded part of the Dakota Territory (Minnehaha County, SD after State lines were drawn). The stories I heard from my grandma and read about in the SD pioneer history books... whew!

Bob, your affirmation of every individual and their unique life journey is satisfying. The increasingly judgemental and competetive nature of society is exhausting so I always take a deep cleansing breath as I turn you channel on and relax. You're a good man.

Hey Russ...nice build. Keep the solar panels on the ground. Tilting them towards the sun will make them more efficient than panels laying flat on your roof. Also, you can stay cooler by parking the trailer in the shade and with enough cable, the panels can be out in the sun. Another thing to increase efficiency of ground panels...you can keep them clean without climbing up on the roof. If you ever camp in the mountains and get snowed on...you won't have to climb up top to clean the panels then either.

Melissa, I like the Wee Roll videos, but I agree with Bob that vans offer better security, should you have to leave in a hurry. In a trailer , you have to get out of the trailer and hop in your driving vehicle to leave.

@@davidleigh443 You can pull a small cargo trailer. You can Sleep & keep your money/documents in a smaller van, SUV or truck for security & keep your kitchen, clothes, shower, etc in the small cargo trailer. Bob interviewed a woman who has that setup.

Elastomeric caulking holds better than nails with a clean bond. You could use it too fasten your panels too the roof. I use it everyday as a painter. It flexes like rubber and hoods like glue.

I'm in the preparatory stage. Right now I'm an American expat living overseas as a contractor. God willing, in a couple of years I'll be coming back to the States and cutting back to a part-time / free-lance / nomadic way of life. I've been flipping back and forth between van and cargo trailer, and leaning towards the latter at the moment. At least initially I think most of my setup will actually be based on camp furniture(!) from Walmart(!), and I'm in no hurry to settle on a final build configuration yet. I think you're the one who advised experimenting with various van/trailer interior layouts set up in appropriately sized subsets of current living quarters, and that makes all sorts of good sense. It's exactly what I'll be doing over the next few months, and I'll be tempted to post updates from time to time. Thanks again, Bob, for the solid information you put out and _very much_ for the inspiration you provide.

A very nice, light and spacious trailer with a fit out to suit the profession and lifestyle of the owner! Inexpensive plastic drawer cabinets and the hollow door counter top are both lightweight, efficient and easily and quickly removable. These no-build builds are some of my favourites because they're imaginative and allow for unlimited use of the asset, be it a van or cargo trailer! The owner was spot on about keeping everything lightweight, and I suspect quite a few vehicles are at or beyond their gross weight limits!

Enjoy your Chanel. I used to teach Primitive Life Skills among other things along the way so love nature and have lived location independent at different times in my life for extended periods. Three years of hitch-hiking backpacking the U.S. and Canada picking up work along the way, wrangling horses taking people on trail rides for the summer in Colorado or winter in Cave Creek Az. if I needed to pick up some extra cash or whatever showed up when needed. Months of traveling back packing in between gigs was my first. Three years camping out of a mini-van around the country last stint. Loved it so much. Took seats out. Bed on one side and gear on the other. Have seen some car camping videos on your Chanel where people use tents like I used to in addition to the vehicle. Surprised that I have never seen anyone in a pop up camper. We went from extended tent camping to the Flagstaff Mac pop up camper back in 2014 and really love it. A step up in comfort from a tent. Good place to hang out if the weather is rough for a few days, relatively inexpensive, (my first pop-up was a used one in good shape for $500 the Mac was about $6000 new so there is a good rang of entry points) light weight to pull, can take it anywhere I can drive my Honda Pilot.. Had an extra propane tank put on. Have small RediSet solar panel/Battery for recharging devices. We can be out two weeks easy and can stretch up to a month being conservative with the water even if there is no local stream to use a water filter in. Set up and drive to hike and explore or run into town if we need too. Why no pop-ups? Also wondering why the Lifetime Senior National Park Pass has not come up. Free entry to all national parks and half price camping in National Forrest Campgrounds many of which are hardly used. $12 a night cut to $6 x 30 days equals $180 a month. I got mine the last year it was $20 but it is still a bargain at $100.

You should tell him to make a Murphy bed would be easier and put square shelving unit to put his milk crate on each side of his bed ,one side tool and equipment for his bike clothes on the other side would be perfect . He just has to lift his bed and lock it in and everything is bolted to the wall doesn't have to move anything . They sell kits for the bed . It only sticks out about 12-16 inches about lots of room for the bike and to walk around
