In this video we are exploring the downtown core of Lexington Kentucky, USA. We start over by the university of Kentucky, and then move downtown. Here we see the streets, the people and the shops of the city.
This little walking tour of the city will give you a bit of history regarding the city, it's slave selling past, and how it's doing today
Here we walk around the Hotels in Lexington, KY, the shops and the general public. Downtown Lexington is very beautiful and clean, although it seemed like a lot of homeless people around.
Lexington KY is home to the University of Kentucky, the biggest university in the state! It's amazing since this isn't even the capital of Kentucky.
Enjoy the video of from the Bluegrass State!

Lexington is my home and it'll always be where my heart is. Thank you guys for visiting this beautiful city! :) But to clarify on the homeless situation: Lexington is an extremely giving city and there's several homeless shelters around town, especially around campus. Usually the same people are at the same spots every single day begging. It's almost become a normal thing here.

We really loved our time there. We didn't stay too long as the true purpose of the trip was to see the horses and the distilleries in the area, but really liked the city. I'm sure its bustling when all the students are around! Yeah, the same thing is true here. I can name a handful of "prime" begging spots in our city that our homeless are typically found as well. I think being a holiday without the typical buzz of a work week it was abnormally apparent - even to outsiders!

No - hardly anyone on the streets. I guess that is a holiday where people either go out to the cemeteries or stay home! Glad you liked the little bit of history and information in this video. That is something I am going to be doing more of. Hahaha, yes, I suppose in Africa you don't have the fluctuation we do - we ALWAYS talk about weather here! Right now it's cold. Quite cold. This came up in my recommended videos and I wanted to venture into the archives to take a look. My father was originally from Kentucky and lived in Lexington the last few years of his life. I actually went for the first time about ten years ago, but spent my time seeing family related sites so I didn't get to explore downtown too much. I did walk around Rupp Arena and Lexington Center a little, and checked out The Red Mile. It was nice to get a look at some of the things I missed when I was there. Oh, and there is a legend of a blue horse in Kentucky, but I think it just symbolizes Kentucky Bluegrass.

The town was really quite nice - I can imagine with that many students this place is quite busy during the fall and winter months! Yeah, the southern USA had quite the slave trading problem at one point. It was still thought that white men were better than their black counterparts and KY was right in the middle of that nonsense. It's great that they acknowledge what happened, and hopefully we will all learn from that mistake!

No it sure isn't! That being said, we don't have much (in the city) so far this year. We've had a couple good snowfalls, but then rain typically follows and takes it away. The pain is that it's been so cold, so everything is frozen and slippery. The worst part of the winter in my opinion. This was a great spot! Actually a very beautiful city and we quite enjoyed walking around to explore it!

I’m moving to Kentucky next year Danville or Lexington. Is it really humid there? I stayed in Florida for 2 weeks I hated the humidity.
@DestinationEarth
@DestinationEarth 4 жыл бұрын
As far as humidity goes, I would say Kentucky is at the part of the states where things start becoming humid. It's humid, but not Florida humid. For example, I went to school in TN for a couple of years. I moved there in the summer from a place (Nova Scotia) where there is vert little humidity. My first summer in TN I had to literally change my clothes and have a shower after walking home from class - and it was a 10 minute walk - I was sweating so much due to humidity. But humidity is also something you get used to fairly quickly. By the second summer I could mow the lawn in the middle of the day and barely break a sweat. The one thing I loved about KY was how green everything looked! I'm sure you'll like that part as well.

Josh you sadly missed much of the city. Did you even see the National Horse Park? You made note of an important topic that of of the large number of homeless. Lexington suffers from the unique problem of other cities sending their homeless to the city of Lexington. Uh, yes you heard me right as Lexington is very progressively liberal and the churches actually feed the homeless and treat them better than other cities. Which accounts for the large number of homeless you will find. It is a catch 22. Lexington was the cultural progressive city of the West hence, it's moniker, "Athens of the West". Did you visit Transylvania University? It educated much of the Confederate elite. You failed to even show that section of the city. :( You should have visited on Thursday Night for Thursday Night Live. You would have seen a much different city, vibrant, young, alive. Very Family oriented.

Wow, thanks a lot for putting so much into this comment! In addition to what is in this video , we went to the Lexington Cemetery and The Thoroughbred Park - which may or may not be the same park as you're talking about - but they are in their own videos as I didn't want to make this one too terribly long. Wow, I'm glad I wasn't being overly harsh when I commented about the homeless, but it turns out what seemed to be pretty apparent was actually justified! I don't think we made it over to that part of the city. We had about 4 hours wondering around and finding stuff. We had no plan going into, so we probably missed a ton of things. Only spending 4 hours in the city (walking) I guess we were bound to miss something. That being said, we were quite pleased with what we did see! Most of our trip in that area focused on going to the Thoroughbred Center (the latest video) and then the Distilleries in the area (the videos coming up). We were also there in the spring - and this being a university city like mine at home (Halifax, NS) I know the population was drastically lower than it would be if we came in the fall and winter. Thanks again for the great comment!
@colink6587
@colink6587 5 жыл бұрын
Hi again. Your most welcome. Thoroughbred Park is not the National Horse Park. The National Horse Park lies just outside the city and is over a 1000 acres and like Disney Land for horse lovers. LOL! While Gratz Park lies next to Transylvania University and is gorgeous with homes built in the federal style on one side of the park from the early 1800s ( those whose families would support the Union side) and directly across the park square, larger Antebellum homes ( those whose families would support the Confederacy among them the Confederate General John Hunt Morgan House) I love your videos and look forward to more of them. Safe travels. @@DestinationEarth

@DestinationEarth 4 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you do have plows - most cities do, I'm just saying that areas in this part of the country don't have to deal with it as much, and because of that, things shut down really quick. Perhaps things are vastly different between Lexington and Chattanooga, but was my experience there! I remember one year I wanted to buy snow tires and the closest place I found some was up in Delaware I believe!
@BlueKentuckyGirl
@BlueKentuckyGirl 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, we get quite a lot of snow, too. I'm just not sure where you got that idea. I think that's the point we are BOTH trying to make. I grew up in Lexington, moved all around the Midwest and the Northeast and returned thirty years ago. I now live in Richmond, Madison County, just one county south of Lexington in Fayette , and my now-adult children missed an average of eight to 10 days of school each year, primarily because the southern half of our county is more mountainous and the risk that poses when traveling the back roads with children in school busses. It's just really frustrating to have our hometown cities misrepresented so casually by visitors and then have them become defensive when we try to point it out. Get it right, accept when you are wrong gracefully and be glad you learned something, or find something else to do. It's completely unprofessional.

Yeah, I did find it really noticeable. Someone else said that Lexington is a place that almost "takes them in" to help get them back on their feet, but that also means you likely have more of them around. We have a lot of them in my city too (Halifax). They also sit outside coffee shops with a cup shaking a coffee cup at you asking for money.

Sounds like that is something a lot of people would enjoy! But I get the eagerness to leave - especially if you have never lived anywhere else. I've been lucky to live a few places, and I've enjoyed each for a different reason. Traveling (for me) is a way to break up the routine of being in one place however - and Lexington is nothing like home, so it was a neat change for me.
