Alaska is gorgeous. Love that little town of Hoonah. The Falls are lovely and I love that history of the Cannery. Oh the views from the Gondola. I've heard of certain areas of Alaska that you have to have a guide to hike through. That ziprider looked like so much fun!

I was on the Eurodam in 5 -23 and it was to dock here. Never heard an announcement wether it did or not and asked on line if we did. Stange a ship scheduled to stop at a port and nothing?🤔

This is a bittersweet memory for me. Icy Strait Point was the last stop on my Alaska cruise before I came down with COVID and was quarantined to a medical cabin for the entire last 5 days of the cruise. I had NO symptoms the morning of the stop, but by the end of the day I had a cough that was unstoppable. I went to the infirmary, they ran a COVID test "just in case," and when the doctor returned to the exam room with two ship security staff, I knew it was positive. I don't blame them for isolating me - obviously the right thing to do, but still a big disappointment, of course. They did take good care of me, providing Paxlovid and Z-pack antibiotics (not sure why since COVID is viral, but whatever....) At least I had been on a couple of previous Alaska cruises, so I didn't miss a LOT of ports I'd never been to before, but I did miss one.

I can’t imagine getting sick and have to quarantine in a small little cabin. At least you have seen some of the area before. Icy Strait is a fun little cruise stop.

@@TravelingAtoZ At least they gave me an oceanview cabin, and delivered the same food they were serving in the MDR. They told my wife to pack all my stuff and bring it to the infirmary, and that she had the option of either quarantining with me, or continuing her cruise with our friends (she had no symptoms.) She opted to stay in our original cabin and continue the cruise, which certainly made sense!

Forgot to ask what time of the year were you there? We are from Australia and will be there on the 3rd Sept so wondering what to pack?
@TravelingAtoZ
@TravelingAtoZ 9 ай бұрын
We went Sept. 4th. I recommend dressing in layer and bring a rain jacket. It rained most days. The nicest day was when we were in Icy Strait and it was probably 70 degrees (21 C). Most of the trip was around 58 degrees (14 C). When you are cruising by the glacier, the wind blowing off the glacier is ice cold so I would recommend a warm jacket, hat, and gloves.

Going to be there in September! Can someone tell me what type of facilities are available at the top of the gondola run? I'd like to go on the loop trail but my wife can't and would wait for me. Is there a gift shop, restroom? Thanks.
@TravelingAtoZ
@TravelingAtoZ Жыл бұрын
At the top of the gondola ride they have a restroom, and outdoor seating area, and a place to buy drinks. There is not a lot to do up on top. I think they are trying to build and expand. I am not sure if they are adding more this season or not.

sadly mispronouncing "huna" "hoonah" "xunaa" as "hookah"! in the first part of this?! Two times! Also stating that Hoonah is a part of icy strait. Not so much. Icy Strait is a part of Hoonah. This woman's take on Icy Strait and Xunaa is a far cry from its rich history.
@TravelingAtoZ
@TravelingAtoZ Жыл бұрын
I did realize I mispronounced “Hoonah” unfortunately I didn’t realize until I got home. The only way I could try to correct in the video was by highlighting the name in red above for reference, which I did the two times I mispronounced it. I did’t realize Icy Straight was part of Hoonah and not the other way around. Thank you for the information.
