Content creator & video editor friends of mine are all jumping back onto the Final Cut bandwagon, they are all loving the stability, performance, and ease of use - even more so now when it comes to render performance on their shiny new M1 MacMinis. I personally haven't used Final Cut since like FPCv7 or something like that back in the Leopard & Snow Leopard days... Keen to know more about the heat extraction fan you're using - I have one in my server room - an in-line one I got from Bunnings (leading / major home hardware supplies in Australia) and it does lower the temps by between 5-10c on a standard 20c day. My server room is also much smaller than yours, and also quite packed with a full height rack (top two thirds populated)... Great vid!

I've worked a bunch with Axis cams. Really rock-solid, though the documentation on their different view modes was opaque enough that I had to open a couple of tickets and spend a lot of time in the server logs. They run Linux under the hood, and their firmware updates are essentially just disk image files, so you can provision a whole bunch of them remotely via API quite easily. As for your cabling beauty, function trumps beauty every time. As long as airflow isn't affected, you're the only one who has to work on it! How do the Ubiquiti switches handle stacking/clustering? For a home network where uptime isn't a priority, it's not a super-critical thing, but for my home lab, I'm deliberately purchasing two of everything for that purpose.

I run macs and Pc's and I have to agree with you. Final cut pro X is the best editor I have ever used. The only reason I don't still use it is I have to edit on a PC now because my 2008 Mac Pro gave up the ghost. I couldn't afford a new mac pro and didn't want a used one. Now I edit on DaVinci Resolve with a PC built around a threadripper. Its worlds better than Adobe premier but It nowhere near as good as final cut pro.

Loved the video! My wife suspiciously asked what I was planning this time as I watched this. Ok, this question is maybe not appropriate in a comment, but just generally speaking in a short handed response - any particular, or general reason why you chose to go with Synology vs QNAP for your main NAS requirements? I had the choice a few years ago and went with QNAP, now I'm upgrading my NAS and am reassessing my options. QNAP still seems better to me... Better hardware specs pound for pound, and more ability to tinker perhaps? I wanted to get some insight from a power user, maybe there's something I'm missing?

The ONT isn't doing routing or firewall stuff for him. It just terminates the fiber and acts as a cable signal multiplexer and phone adapter. This is likely taken from separate VLANs coming over the fiber connection. Then there is a VLAN for his internet connection which is tapped off and sent to his own router/firewall.

@@TheGeekPub I don't see how a DAC cable is limiting compared to a fiber patch cable of the same length. For the runs in the network closet itself, DAC has some advantages over fiber. DAC is just more reliable for these types of short runs, and can even be cheaper, not to mention typically has lower power consumption as well. Though, if one already have a tone of fiber patch cables and SFPs, then it is obviously "easier" to run fiber. Even if swapping out DAC is just like swapping out an SFP.

A good point was made about Apple computers being needed for those who absolutely need Apple software for pro level purposes. That aside... most people overpay to own the Apple logo but do not use the Apple for the advantages re: software but only for lower level consumer oriented stuff ( about 10% of Apple computer capacity ). Apple laptops, computers and phones have so much designed obsolecense and inability to be repaired or reconfigured as open source devices that the consumer is being ripped off. The thousands of $$$$ wasted could have been better invested into the needs of the children, family or personal needs like paying insurance, paying off tickets etc :)

I still see an updated report by bloomberg which is referencing this supposedly "debunkt" association with chinese hacking and eavesdropping, so your reference to someone going to jail is a bit confusing to me.

On Telus in Canada, it is possible to take the SFP fiber line directly into a pfsense router

@TheGeekPub Love your setup and agree with your sentiment on cable managing. You mounted jacks on the exterior for the cameras. Curious. Aren't you concerned someone could plug something into them? I assume your camera network is isolated but I would still be nervous about such an install. Also, the weatherproofing would be a concern.

They are on an isolated VLAN.... no access to my home network. As for weather? We're going on six years without issue. So I am not too worried. It costs $2 to replace a jack if they ever fail.

Your setup is a little close to mine. Can you do a LAN copy and see what speed you get? All mine seem to be just 10 and I got a gigabit LAN I guess it should be up to 1000 not not 10. If you do get more can you do a video how to fix this to be faster?
