Thanks for the adventures, Kacey. It was harder than we thought to say goodbye. BUT, it's time for a new adventure. Quilters, crafters and RVers, we're going to need a ton of help and advise. Remember, the budget and rig (Cherokee Wolf Pup 16fq) are both VERY small. Though we don't always have time to respond, please know that we read EVERY SINGLE COMMENT. We appreciate all the help we can get, and we are literally taking notes. :O)

When I lived in a camper I made sure everything in it did double duty. All tables had to have storage drawers, the sofa was a hide-a-bed, my chest of drawers held the TV/DVD on top, etc. I also had a piano bench for a coffee table & filled the space under the lid with my sewing gear & patterns. My sewing machine sat on top when I sewed. A wooden kitchen chair held my press-n-cut pad & travel iron off to the right & a small foldable drying rack held my fabrics/strips in front of the piano bench. It was tight but definitely doable & I even managed to make a quilt that won a blue ribbon at our county fair! Hope that gives you some ideas to try in your camper.

I use an old toolbox to hold my notions and sewing tools. It latches, holds scissors, cutters, some rulers, thread, bobbins, sewing machine needles & hand sewing needles, pins, thread spools, marking pencils, a battery powered pencil sharpener (from Dollar Tree), bobbins in a case, fusible interfacing, ribbon, a few fat quarters (1/4 yard cuts of fabric) and larger scraps (I use them to lead fabric, test out my tension, try stitches). Often there is room for my current pattern, too. The toolkit fits into small spaces easily. I also recommend you get a cutting mat.

Congratulations on your new trailer! I’m so excited for you. I think the idea on storing your Featherlite in the second bench is a great idea. I If you knock out the panel in that bench , you could easily access a container containing your quilting tools and notions(excellent lists by others in comments). I use a small, plastic toolbox-mine is a pink one to support Breast Cancer research. Keep Your Daydream share their storage ideas on their channel. I think it would be a good idea to install a wall mount medicine cabinet with a lock to corral your toiletries, since you travel so much. It would certainly make breaking camp a lot simpler. It’s really important to know the size of your space-windows, bed, cupboards, etc.-for when you’re shopping. I use the Measure app to do this. You just take photos of your space and add the measurements in the app. Then you always have the information at hand. Safe travels, and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦

Welcome to the fun worlds of quilting and RVing in a TT. Hubby had a camper shell on the back of our pickup. We store everything we do not need all the time. You can create all kinds of cubbys in the back of the truck. If you can find a Singer Featherweight sewing machine, you will reduce weight and they do not have computer parts that can tire after a lot of bouncing around. Command Strip hangers are a life saver. You can hang baskets and a small design wall or pictures and quilts from them.

Sizes are up to you: cutting mat, ironing mat, rotary cutter, scissors, seam ripper, small iron, rulers, squares, straight pins, safety pins, threads, quilt clips, an idea journal, and fabric…..and don’t forget about storage boxes (I use plastic with locking handle lids) to keep everything all together and easy for you to get at when the mood strikes to do a bit of creating! 💕👵🏻

You will have so much fun buying your supplies and a sewing machine. I think a singer featherweight would be great for you since it is small and compact. In addition to the supplies recommended by others I’d suggest a magnetic pin cushion or you can also use Sew Tites which are super small and strong. Magic pins, in fine (ones with aqua blue ends) are my favorite pins. They are easy to grip and easy to find if you drop one. I would also highly recommend quilters select rulers. They have a grippy texture on the back to stay put when cutting fabric. They are on the expensive side but we’ll worth it for the stability. Other rulers will slide around on fabric when you cut if you don’t hold them steady. Most important have fun and enjoy learning your new hobby!!

One more thing: an ironing board is important and is super easy to make. My travel board is 11x14 inches. It’s a piece of plywood wrapped in a couple layers of batting and covered with twill fabric. Or you can use the silver fabric meant for heat. It’s all neatly stapled on the back side with a staple gun. I also have a wool mat the same size which just lays on top. Good luck!! Have fun!! 🤩

Oh my goodness i love love love your camper!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️. I cannot wait to see you guys next month , because I’ve started a “sewing kit” for you . To answer your question , you can really pack up easily using one bin . I keep going back to when you had the truck camper that you needed to remove stuff out of the bathroom to shower. It took a matter of minutes , What I would do is have my machine , my notions which is your thread ,scissors ,ruler ,rotary cutter , baby iron , your project , you’re cutting mat, which I will gladly show you when you come , it can all fit in a clear plastic tote with a lid that you could put in the shower when you’re traveling or when you want to clean off your kitchen table you could put everything in one tote and then put it back in the shower when you’re not using it. That’s what I would do if I had your camper, which I absolutely am in love with that I would love for my Ford Explorer !! To start with quilting you need very basic things ( hence why I’m putting together something for you guys ).. sewing machine Thread / thread catcher bag Pair of Scissors just for fabric, not to cut a Pooh hose 😂. Folding combination cutting mat/ ironing pad, ( they offer different sizes, I’d start small to stay compact) Little iron Design boards ( which I’m in process of making

I would love to see a video at MSQC or another quilt shop of buying starter quilting supplies! Try out several sewing machines and buy the one you like. Buy from a shop who gives lessons on sewing and machine matainance. Pick a beginner pattern and buy just what you need for that quilt, you can always add more supplies, you don't need to get everything day 1. Most of all have fun!!

We are campers, not full timers. But I have a small light weight sewing machine that goes where we go. You will need a small cutting mat, a rotary cutter, a good pair of scissors, a small iron and a pressing mat. A ruler, I likes 4”x16” and a 2.5”x 8”. A seam ripper, and thread. I have a plastic box with a locking lid that will hold those items. Layer cake are 10” squares usually 40 in a pack, of coordinating fabric , jelly roll is 2.5” strips 40 in a roll, charm pack are 5” squares 40 in a pack, honey bun are 1.5 in strips. As a newbie maybe start with a layer cake or jelly roll . Find a pattern that uses those pre cuts and only buy what you need to make that pattern. Jordan fabrics and MSQC both have excellent tutorials for both the new and advanced quilter. Keep it simple don’t over buy , you will be overwhelmed when you find you have no place to put away your things. I hope this information is helpful, accuracy in both cutting and stitching are the keys to a successful beautiful quilt. Enjoy and God Bless

We had a truck camper, now a 5-WH, but husband wants another truck camper for short trips, SMH, the jacks always made me nervous! In small space of truck camper my FIL made storage under dinette seats, making removable foundation boards under cushions . He also made small racks to hang on walls here/there. Cloth pocket organizers are helpful. I have a dbl sided one. Shoe type ones can be shortened, cut in rows, hung up or attached. I noticed your big fridge right away in your video, yippee! Congrats! I watch MSQC all the time, but have yet to make a quilt. On our recent camping trip I thought of bringing my new machine, but then wondered about all I’d need to pack away safe for the bumpy ride. I’ll follow the tips you get

Hi, so excited for your new travel trailer. As a new sewer, I suggest purchasing a machine from a store that will include beginning sewing classes. There are so many items for quilting. What I find as necessary for starting out are: a rotary cutter, a good pair of fabric scissors, seam ripper, cutting mat, iron, wool iron matt, a cutting ruler that makes sense to you. These are just basics. Have fun.

There will be times when you’ll really want to spread your fabric out to cut it, you might just really have a large piece. I would call quilt shops where ever you may be-many have classrooms with tables and chairs and they will often let you come in and use their tables. Of course you’ll need a small sewing machine. You might start off with small projects like table runners, placemats, pillow cases, potholders. And make sure you watch Jenny’s Jellyroll race-it’s a perfect quilt for a beginner.

Love your cozy camper! I would think a clear plastic tub to hold your quilting supplies would work. It's portable, so could move it whenever you needed to. It could serve as a foot rest or coffee table when sitting on the couch. Or, that space under the dinette bench would work, too. Start small, start slow. Don't buy fabric just to have on hand (a 'fabric stash'), buy fabric only for the project you're working on. Like Jenny said, you need a little place to sew, a little place to iron, etc. Pre-cut terms: Fat quarter: a quarter yard of fabric that's 18" by 21", roughly. (Instead of 9" by 42" off the fabric bolt). 4 fat quarters equals 1 yard of fabric. Many times a collection of fabric will be in a fat quarter bundle, so it all coordinates and matches. Jelly Roll: usually 40-42 coordinating strips of fabric, 2.5" wide by the width of the fabric long (40-42"). In total, approx. 2.9 yards of fabric. Layer Cake: 40-42 cuts of coordinating fabric that are 10" by 10" square. Roughly 2.78 yards of fabric total in a layer cake . Charm Pack: 40-42 cuts of coordinating fabric that are 5" by 5" square. (4 charm packs equals 1 layer cake, in terms of fabric totals). Those are the main pre-cuts used. Layer cakes are very versatile, in that they can be cut into quarters to get 5" squares (4 charm packs equals 1 layer cake in terms of total fabric yardage), or into 4 equal strips 2.5" wide, etc. Pre-cuts generally cost more than buying fabric off the bolt, but all the coordinating of fabrics is done for you so you don't have to worry about it, AND it's easy to store.

Hi from Vancouver. I have the identical TT, luv it❤️ I’ve used mine for quite a few months now so I’m familiar with the space. I find the fridge huge and use it as a pantry for everything food. Now I’ve got more cabinet space. I use cupboards over the table for my sewing supplies. I put my sewing machine under the bed and have plastic totes under there too. I’ve got small quilts hung on the walls for color. I was thinking u might use wall space for visibly displaying your fabrics something like your towel rack above the toilet but more complementary to fabric display. Enjoy my/your trailer:)

Layer cake=10” squares, charm pack= 5” squares, jelly roll= 2 1/2” strips. These terms are from Moda Fabric so there are different names from other companies. Each pack has fabric from a designer that coordinates so no matching fabrics. Get a small lightweight travel machine to start, a 12x18 cutting mat and a rotary cutter. Every quilter has their favorite thread, pick a brand and get white, beige and gray to start. Hope you found some wall decor in Liberty.😊

I would download a basic quilting book. And go step by step through how to learn to quilt and then you can decide what you need to do the type of quilts your going to do. Plus you get all terms log your. My favorite has nine lesson on beginning quilting, it’s called, Beginning Guide to Quilt Making by Jeri Simon. It took fear away and helped me to use a rotary cutter, mat etc. I do like the cutting board and ironing board combo. It flips from one to the other. Enjoy relax and take it one step at a time. You don’t need to have a lot to quilt. I would say one machine wither it be a featherweight or a small Janome or Babylock. A small place to keep quilting supplies. You could use a camping hanging bag as well. We bought at the rev place we used for this type of stuff in our pop up years ago. Use a little of your wall space by the bed. That way stuff is handy and you could get to it without moving things. Plus, I would think some of quilting supplies would be handy for other things.

I have my small featherweight singer machine which I repaired. I do not bring a digital screen sewing machine because of the bouncing of trailer, scissors to cut fabric only. Small scissors to cut threads. seam ripper, rotary cutter and mat the other side has a pressing mat on it. A 6in wide ruler and small 2 1/2 inch ruler. Usually I carry grey or white thread for piecing fabric pieces together because it can go with most colors of fabric. Small package of hand sewing needles. Only bring a1/4 sewing machines foot. It fits neatly in the bottom of the closet or under the bench. We have a Nucamp Tag 400.

Shopping list: sharp pair of shears ( longer bladed scissor), a rotary cutter (like a VERY sharp pizza cutter) and a mat and ruler (1/8” thick, 6” or 6:5” wide and 12”-24” long, depending on mat size.) you need a small ironing board and an iron ( which doesn’t need to be expensive, but should get hot. You can use a spray bottle instead of steam to make it last longer.) hand needles and thread.that gets you by until you get a machine, which should take a while as you need to try out different ones. You probably want to buy one GOOD machine instead of 2 cheaper ones. Buying a more expensive USED machine can save money and will be less frustrating than a cheaper one that acts up on you. That way you are also only storing one machine! I see you have wall space behind the dinette where you may want to add baskets or Trones shoe organizers from IKEA..

I’d get a sewing machine (BabyLock Brillant is a good quality), cutting mat, rotary cutter, rulers (creative grids are the best), pins, frixon pen (ink disappears), a small travel iron, they also have those cut and press mats (one side is for cutting and the other side is for pressing seams) and of course fabric (I’d start out using precuts) and background fabric. Also don’t forget Jenny Doans tutorials! Kimberly Jolly with Fat Quarter Shop also has great tutorials. Have fun!!

"Honey bun" 1 ½" inch wide by width of fabric (wof) Jelly roll 2½"in by wof, mini charm aka candy packs 2½"sq,charm pack 5" sq, layer cake 10"sq, fat ¼ is 22"x18" fabric, fat ⅛ is 22"x9" fabric, jolly bar only sold by fat quarter shop is 5"x10" all these packs usually have 40 to 42 pieces except mini charms which have 82. USE Every square foot of Wall Space from the Ceiling down in 13 inch sections and envision putting Wire Hanging Baskets around the Ceiling. In these Wire Hanging Basket Units you will store: 1) Fabrics that you fold around Comic Book Card Stock Boards. That gives you the ability to store fabric Vertical....in Rows like a library shelf and you can SEE the fabric easily. 2) Cutting Tools you need: Pinking Shears, Large and Small Rotary Cutters, Large and Small Cutting Mat. (FISKAR is a good brand for these tools) 3) When buying a sewing machine....get an Embroidery Machine! That hugely expands your versatility in creating professional items. (especially if you plan to SELL the creations online) 4) Utilize a Peg Board unit to hang items to store: IKEA has metal and particle board units in various sizes. See their catalog. 5. Important: to do hours of sewing, a posture chair is vital. Figure out where you can sit for extended times with workspace on each side of the sewing machine. Good Luck!

Before you buy anything- get “Marianne Fons & Liz Porter Quilters Complete Guide”, You will have everything you ever want to know about quilting in it. If IF if...you are only quilting, you need a beginner sewing machine, rotary cutter and med size mat that will fit on your counter space (measure b4 you buy) and a small iron and ironing mat. I use the press and cut. Neutral color threads such as DK gray LT gray cream white black (basic). You need basic sewing tools, seam ripper (ABSOLUTE!) scissors in a cpl sizes that are used for thread and fabric ONLY! I like the Dura sharp pins and a magnetic bowl, seam clips are an option too. RULERS! I like a long 6" ruler and I have a 5" square and a 12" square as well as a 3X6 and thats all. Basic. most of all my supplies including fabric I get from Walmart because they are in every town and I can buy more if I mis-cut or run out of fabric. Oil for your machine and extra needles is also a good thing. A good resource for books is local libraries you don't have room for a lot of books. I would suggest getting a fabric "family" in a color that you both like or one for each of you and a block pattern that is simple and use up all the fabric you buy on that first project and perfect it. I know it is amazing to go into the quilt stores and buy buy buy fabric BUT! as a beginner my suggestion is again Walmart so it doesn't hurt your feeling if you mess up. Watch all kinds of KZbin videos and ENJOY!

I just love your new home! It's wonderful. How about a Singer 221 (Featherweight). Very small but sews like a dream. Just make sure you get instructions on how to care for it, oil and grease. In it's case it will fit in a tote and smaller machine means more room for fabric. Jenny at MSQC has a great starter kit it has everything including quilting the three layers together. I would be very happy to share some of my duplicate quilting items. I have extra rulers, pinking sheers, roller cutters and more. Also get a subscription to Block Magizine, I think they offer a digital version only. Jenny is an awesome teacher. She taught me from the beginning. Good luck and happy and safe travels in your new RV. To start with your new hobby it will take some time to figure out what you like to do but I would suggest a small sewing machine such as a featherweight or small Janome. I love baskets to keep each project in and you can just pull it out of storage and you have everything available to you. In the basket keep your fabrics, scissors, seam ripper (if needed), pattern, rotary cutter and you are set. You can get a small cutting mat and travel iron would help. There are many quilt shops that have a beginning set to start out. Also, I started out quilting many years ago and found that beginning quilt classes helped alot with tricks and tips. Your new adventure will be fun to watch and I hope you share all videos of your experiences.

Wow! What a cute trailer. Going from a truck camper to a travel trailer is going to provide you with so much more room. We still travel in our truck camper. It has a slideout so it feels much bigger. I have a 3 drawer storage bin in our bathroom. The bottom drawer is where I keep my current project and notions (tools of the trade if you will). I pack my sewing machine in the back seat of the truck. Don’t want it bouncing around too much. General items I take: Rotary cutter 5x15” MSQC Ruler Marking pen Prewound bobbins (4) Lg spool of thread (white) Wool mat for ironing 12x24” cutting mat Full size iron (don’t like the small ones) Both perfectly slotted trimmer rulers Seam ripper And fabric of course That’s about all I can think of off the top of my head. You guys are going to have so much fun with all that extra room. You could also get a sewing “bin” and maybe store it in one of the outside compartments. Have a marvelous weekend. Your new home is REALLY nice!! What fun!! You will find that quilters -- any sewist, really -- has a lot of equipment and tools. Just start with the basics -- scissors, a rotary cutter, tape measure, a cutting mat, a sewing ruler, straight pins, thread to use on your project, and your fabric! There are a lot of quilting channels on YT but you've got a great resource in your friend, Jenny. She'll "hook" you up!! 😄 You can use your dining table for a craft table. Do you know yet what kind of sewing machine you're going to get? That is entirely a personal choice. I used to have a much larger machine with all the embroidery program disks and the embroidery hoops but I never used it enough to make it worth the cost of everything. I sold it months ago and -- not everyone knows this yet (I needed to work with it a bit before I videoed me using it) -- I recently bought a new machine that I just love. You don't need a big, fancy sewing machine to do any type of sewing but having one with some decorative stitches built in is a perk. You can also finish up the quilt on your machine instead of having someone with a long-arm quilt machine do that for you. I bought my new machine with the intention of doing everything myself: sew the quilt top together and do the quilting (sewing the quilt top, the batting, and the quilt backing all together). I hand-stitch the binding on the quilt but some people use their machine to do that, too. If you are able to take a beginning quilting class at one of the quilt shops you visited ( like at Jenny's), that's a great way to get started with sewing a quilt, too. My very first quilt was the log cabin quilt that I made in a class at the Sewing Studio (my favorite quilt store here). That was over 20 years ago and I still take the occasional class there to learn something new. Oh, I've gone on far too long here but I'm excited for you! A new home, a new hobby!! Wow!! I'll be watching to see how you set yourself up. I feel like I'm gathering info for my possible future! Take care!!

So happy for you, start with a simple machine you don’t want a lot of stitches on it, very confusing. I started with Janome Gem , small, lightweight and usually supplies with the 1/4” foot and a walking foot for quilting. You need a simple beginner book, check out Pat Sloan’s books. You need to look through them and see which one you understand, you need a rotary cutter and cutting mat that will work on your counter, best to cut standing, an iron, I like the Panasonic cordless one, and I made a ironing board from an old tv table, just put batting and material on it and staple to the back, plenty of KZbin shows on that. This should be a could starting point for now. Have fun. You might need a bigger camper if you are like the rest of us quilters and can’t say no to fabric, it calls to you and tells you that you need to buy it.

Forgot to mention 1 big thing. Living in a small space I’m sure you already know how important it is to keep things neat & put away as you go. Many quilters work in an atmosphere of “creative chaos.” But in an rv you can’t do that. You will have to stay neat & organized or you will have a disaster that could derail you at the very start. When I’m working on a project with a lot of pieces I keep them in ziplock baggies & label them so I know what I have. I’ve learned the hard way that it’s necessary. I even do that in the sewing room in my little mobile home that is my permanent home. I have a bunch of baggies that are part of my gear, just waiting for the next project.
@GrassRootsLiving
@GrassRootsLiving 2 жыл бұрын
Great idea on the baggies. You are correct, we really can't afford 'creative chaos' in a camper so small. :)

That new trailer looks great! You’re going to feel a little lost for a while with all that extra space. When I’m traveling I keep my sewing machine on the floor in the back seat of my truck so it doesn’t get bounced around as much. Everyone is already giving lists of supplies so I won’t duplicate that. Take advantage of Jenny, she will be your “gold mine” for info. The idea of a plastic bin in the shower isn’t bad. My brother & sister in law rarely shower in their MH bathroom, they use the showers in the rev parks & the shower is for storage. I usually prefer to use my TT shower just because I don’t have to carry stuff back & forth. Personal preference issue. But if everything is in 1 easy to move bin then the shower is great for portable storage space. I use my kitchen counter for my cutting/pressing space & the dinette table for the machine but that does mean a lot of moving back & forth because you usually press every seam as you sew it. A folding tv tray next to the dinette for pressing would save that & you should be able to find some place to tick it away when not using. Still would say use the kitchen counter for cutting because it’s a better height, saves bending over so much. I have a small travel iron which saves space but when you’re ready to press larger pieces a full size iron is much better. Love the idea of a toy hauler to make a craft room! Buy then I would need a bigger truck than my Nissan Frontier. I’m limited in the size of my TT by the towing capacity of my truck. Looking forward to seeing your first projects. And don’t be nervous. It will be a learning process. I look back at my first projects & see how far I’ve come. You will too.

Thanks for the great suggestions and for watching! We especially love the idea of looking back at our first projects to see how far we have come. That takes a lot of pressure off of us in the learning stages. Jenny always says, "finish is better than perfect". ;)

I am beyond excited for you and your hubby! I love that exact size of camper. I teach free Quilting classes every Saturday morning. I also found out that I could repair old unloved sewing machines. So having said that, you know I have to be thrifty. 😆 I would like to share with you honesty, don’t buy an expensive machine now. A basic Brother or Singer brand will do fine. Read and make sure it says the feed dogs can be switched to stay up or go down. Feed dogs are the moving teeth under the needle that help you move the material when you are sewing. I will list a few things you need at the end. But I really want to give you some advice on space. In the camper, find your Quilting storage area first!!! I would use under the table seat also. Measure it L x W x H. Know your space and never exceed that space. Do not buy more material than you need for your project. Over crowding and lack of organization will kill your joy. After reading and talking with Jenny, decide on a sewing machine. You honestly need only a few items. 1. Sewing Machine, it will probably come with a couple of needles, cleaning brush, small screw driver and a foot. 1/4” foot is great. (ask Jenny) 2.miniature steam iron ( Walmart or Amazon 15 bucks) 3.cut & press combo is my favorite ( this is a flat rotary cutting mat & ironing board) takes up less space! 4. 5” x 15” quilting ruler & a Rotary cutter 5. Scissors, pins & pin cushion 6. Start by making a easy 9 patch pattern. (Watch one of Jenny’s basic 9 patch Quilt tutorials.) 7. Select the amount & colors of material you need for the pattern & a good quality thread.( Get colors you love & want in your camper) Buy a TINY bit extra for a practice cutting & sample beginning sewing. 8. Now sew your blocks to make your Quilt Top. NOW HAVING SAID THIS I love to use the “Quilt as you go”method also. Many books & you tube tutorials on this. To actually quilt your quit, you will need 1.)batting, 2.) backing material, 3.) A quilting foot and or Free motion foot. You can get a soft cover storage bag holder for your machine & items. (Saves space vs a hard plastic cover) Save your scrapes in a zipper baggie for beautiful Scrappy free Quilt or many other things. I have a passion for Quilting. Feel free to message me on FB. Glenda Crouch an Okie! I love your channel! I hope this helps a little.

Hi friends! Ahh, we are so excited for you! We LOVE your new trailer! It has a fantastic layout! We've been anxiously waiting for the tour, it was great! We are not quilters ( you've definitely inspired me 🤔) but we do have a very tiny trailer. Our tips for storage are clear, storage containers, they stack perfectly in the closet. Have a wonderful weekend! -Jody & Chris

For your small space do not stash fabric. Buy kits, one or two at a time. Finish the the project. Then hunt again. Start small, you will enjoy the immediate gratification. Term - WOF - width of fabric. Basic tools - I would love to send you a care package. Email me your shipping address I will get one off to you, my treat. 😁
