TOUR OF OUR LAND / FARM / HOMESTEAD. In this video, we show you around and talk about some of the things we've done and what we have in mind for the future. Hope you enjoy it :)
Hi there :) We're Marc & Allys, a couple of left the UK in search of somewhere we could build a homestead, live more self sufficiently, off the grid and connect with nature. This led us to the beautiful Alentejo region in Portugal.
This video is an introduction and a bit about how we got here.
If you enjoy it, hit like and subscribe for future videos :)

Hi Marc, hi Allys, I'm really glad KZbin suggested your channel! Me and my family visited Portugal in 2017 and were blown away by it's beauty. I'm watching because I love the Portuguese landscape and culture, and I am a passionate gardener and fascinated by the phenomena of Brits leaving the UK in search of a life more in tune with nature. I would love to hear what it's really like coping with the heat!!! BTW- I grew up in London, but emigrated to the USA many years ago. It gets terribly hot here too in the summer. Good luck and look forward to watching your journey.

Thank you so much for the support :) It’s lovely isn’t it? Such a place of natural beauty. There seems to be loads of brits, Americans, Canadians and people from across Europe moving here in search of a more sustainable lifestyle and trying to get closer to nature. It’s lovely to see. The heat is hard, we struggled in the heatwaves, but it was our first summer here so we thought it may be tough :) Ah nice! Where in the US are you? Hope you enjoy future videos!

The wood space will be under the rain in the winter months just when you will need the wood most. Take care!
@rootsdownhomestead
@rootsdownhomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s not a big enough structure, as it’s south facing the sun has really dried the wood out over the past 5-6 months. So I’ll likely put some in the house and the rest in the garage for safe keeping. When I build out new structure I’ll design it so it over hangs enough to keep the wood dry, even when it rains :)

I have just found u guys and I’d love to hear more about Alentajo. I have been looking for a farm in Castelo Branco but it seems a little saturated. @rootsdownhomestead
@rootsdownhomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Hey :) Thanks for watching and the comment! We found the same, Castelo Branco had a lot of properties but not all are desirable, depending on your situation. Plenty of ruins to do up but not much for people in the mid market, the houses that were habitable were far too over priced! Alentejo is beautiful, obviously it’s a very big area of portugal. South west, near the coast is quite expensive but if you don’t mind living rural then the east is a bit cheaper. I think we kind of got lucky with this one too, but I guess the right property for you will appear :)

I wish you all the luck with your new house and land. What a wonderful garden with so many vegetables. I grow a lot (mostly tomatoes and chili) in my poly tunnel here in Denmark where we do not have quite the same warm summers as you do, but this year my plants in the tunnel really needed a lot of water all the time. We also had a very warm summer up here this year. Great video, thanks.

Thank you Eva, appreciate the support and kind words :) Nice! How do you find growing in Denmark? It was hard keeping the poly tunnel cooler, it was getting up to almost 50 degrees at times, crazy! Thanks and have a nice week :)
@evabloecher
@evabloecher 2 жыл бұрын
Growing here is ok I think. And having a poly tunnel here is perfect because I can start to grow for example potatoes, salad and herbs much earlier in the spring and now in the fall I can grow a lot of things in there as well. I wouldn't be able to do that outside because it is too cold during the nights both in the springtime and when it is fall. You must really have had a lot of challenges with your tunnel this year. And a good week to. you as well.
@rootsdownhomestead
@rootsdownhomestead 2 жыл бұрын
@@evabloecher I agree, a polytunnel is a must have :) It's good that you can use it to extend your growing season too! Whilst our summers are very hot we still do get cold winters, albeit for a shorter time. We'll see how that goes Thanks and hope you enjoy future videos!

I notice comments on your video style. I meant to say earlier when I commented that you appear to have your mic pretty much sorted, a mistake many new tubers make is that they do not get the voice pick up right and lose subs from the start as no one can hear them. I could hear everything you said.

Great video. You mentioned that you had a lot of rock rose grow on your land did you know that you can create essential oil from rockrose and it’s quite expensive to buy it’s easy to create essential oils by steam distillation. You can do this with some saucepans but it’s easier to buy a small alembic distiller. They don’t cost much and it’s an easy process I’d recommend looking into this it if you have a large amount.. anyway we’ll done on your adventure … I’ll subscribe

great idea with the papayas - i live in thailand and these fruits are almost always available here, even in my gardens. one must. i told my gardener that he should plant one plant every month, then we will have fruit for everyone throughout the year. half a papaya equals a full meal. Thank you Richard. Appreciate the feedback, some people have said the sound is alright but what specifically is a shame? Is it the actual audio? We actually have an upgraded microphone on the camera but have just ordered some wireless microphones so if we are further away we can ensure the sound quality is better. Thank you for the feedback, it is appreciated and hope to improve for future videos! :)

You have a pretty big solar system. Do you produce enough for during the day or more? If more do you store it in battery's or do you give it back to the grid and can you use it back during the night? I am very much interested on the rules in portugal about that.
@rootsdownhomestead
@rootsdownhomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! At the moment we produce more than enough energy for the day and have battery storage too! We haven’t had it long so want to see how it performs in winter and on days where there is limited sun. So we will soon find out how long the batteries can last. We chose not to feed back to the grid. I’m not sure on the rules around feeding to the grid and using back at night though! Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the answer. Some day I hope to have a property with solar. Which is not possible with my appartment at the moment. Altough a Bluetti could do a little bit but not for the total. I'm also thinking about waterpower. Most peole think big with dams etc. but a difference of 6 meters will already bring some power. Then you can use the power, which you produce to much during the day, to bring the water uhill again so it will produce during the night or in the winter. I was also thinking about wind but till now didn't see a solution for that.
