I remember the Worcester (MA) Galleria Mall parking garage, which was the world's largest until the 80s, with 4,700 parking spaces. It had a huge number of elevators, a whopping......3. THREE. Then again, the way the mall was designed, each of the 6 levels either landed squarely to a parking deck level, or just several steps away, so elevators were not needed. The Jordan Marsh anchor had a level entry at the basement level, and at the 3rd level (garage). With that design,. the elevators were rarely ever used, just the elderly, and handicapped for the most part. Just thought of that, while seeing a 24-elevator garage here. Then again, it probably doesn't meet up with the airport nearly at every level.

I love this airport. Built in 1971, it was built to have up to 90 gates. The hub shown in this video with the airsides was originally designed with 6 airsides, and north of this main terminal there is enough space for another main hub with another up to 6 airsides that could be built. That tile is the original tile with the elevator he first enters - it is the original façade. So is the elevator interior. But the main terminal when you go into it was redesigned just a couple of years ago. The train was added to the rental car center in 2018, so it is much newer. Original airsides were B, C, D, E and were very similar in design. Now they use airsides all built since 1985: A,C,E and F. D should be added back in 2025 and now they cannot rebuild B because it is too close to the nearby runway - so the main terminal can only have five airsides now in the retrofitted design. They have a very well run airport. The walkway he mentions was never open to the public - is the escape access if the train fails (rarely if ever used).

Now, what was Airside B is the baggage sorting facility for Airside A. While we can't use it for airline operations, we also use it for remote parking for aircraft that remain overnight.

Wow, we still had our little gadgetbahn monorail when you made this. Alas, it is no more. It's been ripped out, and the airport is in the process of replacing it with travelators. The old monorail wasn't very useful, but I do miss it.

I LOVE these "APM hub and spoke" airports (as I call them, at least), they seem so efficient when departing! 😀🛫 Orlando Int'l Airport (MCO) has a similar setup with APMs ("Automated People Mover") heading to 4 (soon 5) outer terminals. Unfortunately, these designs aren't the best for connections unless your connecting flight is within the same outer terminal... Then you have to take at least 2 trains and maybe even go back through security. Even more of a hassle for international connections... 😬😵

Where were you headed when you took this? Also, glad you got this video. All of the elevators have new cabs now and the voices on many of them no longer work, and the Airport plans to eventually modernize these with new fixtures. It may not be anytime soon though.

since the circular monorail is landside they should extend it.

Once the monorail is removed, there will be some moving walkways in it's place... :(
@mrm101994 жыл бұрын
Floridian Elevators Hmm I don’t know if that is true or not. The only thing they removed so far is the old guideway bridge out to Airside D. Maybe there was a misconception. The monorail is an essential piece of the long term garage,
@computer0402104 жыл бұрын
Monorail is officially out of service. Removal will be next month. It was originally supposed to be removed in September but due to the virus they decided to do it now. The tracks and glass block walls will be removed along with stations. And moving walkways will be installed on fourth floor similar to the economy garage setup

I may just be saying this cause it’s my hometown airport, but I like TPA airport a lot more than Orlando’s. It’s easier to get in and out of, and like Julian said they are expanding. This one was also built in the 70’s and it looks great for how old it is
